Visitor inbound

The Hawaii men’s basketball team is poised to host its first visiting recruit of the 2013 class in Michael Thomas this weekend.

Thomas, who has been offered a scholarship, is a 6-foot-5 senior at El Camino Real High in Los Angeles. He’s the type of athletic wing player UH coach Gib Arnold covets.

Some Thomas highlights from his junior year can be seen here. They start around the 4:00 mark. He’s clearly got some bounce.

The L.A. Times has reported Thomas has offers from Boise State, Santa Clara and Northern Arizona as well as UH.

La Jolla Prep’s Aaron Valdes is not yet cleared by the NCAA, Arnold said today. Valdes’ 21-day window of participating in individual workouts with coaches has also expired, though he can still do weightlifting and open gym sessions.

Keep you posted on his status as it develops.

    K-Bay,

Agree with you on that. Aaron, late get, enrolled in school going to classes, doing weights, open gym. We wish the best for Aaron getting cleared. He would be great addition to UH MBB team even this year, with his athleticsim and Defense!!

    Come on NCAA clearinghouse!!

Sorry for the stupid question. If Valdez isn’t clear, is he just a regular student paying his own way to Manoa? Or can he remain on scholarship?

    Thanks!

I would honestly think Valdes is cleared as a UH student so… . And also would think admissions already have the paperwork and Clearinghouse just needs to stamp the paperwork. I thought I read getting into UH is more than NCAA minimums to play ball in college. I could be wrong or The Gibper/Admissions screwed up.

Agree with Pocho … in General the UH Leg is Harder …

BUT Never Know with the NCAA … although i don’t think La Jolla Prep is on the NCAA’s “Suspect” List (as are some other Prep Schools), … it just isn’t Approved ’til it’s Approved…

The Risk to Valdes is probably that he would need to be on Student Loan or Academic or Other Aid/Scholarship OR pay his own way until he meets Clearinghouse Requirements to get on Athletic Aid/Scholarship….

C’mon NCAA … Student Athletes deserve better service…

    Hey W.D.,

Not a stupid question. I’ve heard that for now his family is paying his way, yes. We’ll see how it plays out.
