UH announces hoops rally
If you were wondering what UH had planned to celebrate its stellar combined men’s and women’s basketball seasons, wonder no longer.
Here’s a summary of what’s in the works:
The University of Hawaii announced a rally for its Big West champion men’s and women’s basketball teams to be held on Monday.
The 12:30 p.m. event will be at the UH Manoa campus center courtyard and feature the teams, a pep band and cheerleaders. Coaches Eran Ganot and Laura Beeman will speak, along with athletic director David Matlin and chancellor Robert Bley-Vroman.
UH is coming off one of its finest seasons in men’s hoops, a record 28-6 campaign that saw the Rainbow Warriors notch the program’s first NCAA Tournament victory last week, over fourth-seeded California in Spokane, Wash. It was the first NCAA appearance since 2002. The ‘Bows saw their season come to an end with a 73-60 loss to No. 5 Maryland in the round of 32 on Sunday.
Beeman guided the Rainbow Wahine (21-11) back to the NCAAs for the first time since 1998. The Wahine fell at UCLA in the first round of their tournament, 66-50.
The two teams won their respective Big West tournament titles on the same day (March 12) at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.
UPDATE: Gov. David Ige announced there will be a proclamation for the UH hoops teams at 3 p.m. the same afternoon.

The latest update I have on two of the Rainbow Warriors juniors, Aaron Valdes and Stefan Jankovic, is that they’re waiting until next week to decide their stay-or-go-pro fate.
Brian –
Judging by his Twitter (@32muta), former Kahuku standout Samuta Avea is back on the islands. I wanted to know if you knew anything about his recruiting status with UH. Have they reached out to him recently? I see he has an offer but I really hope they are making a serious push for him. The guy is crazy talented and UH could have a good shot at landing him if he wants to come home.
Perhaps they could make sure he makes it to Monday’s rally if he’s still on the islands….that may help.
Any chance you could get an interview with him/run an article? I think he has a fascinating story, being raised here and then making the tough decision moving to Utah. Any update would be fantastic.
Can we get an update on Samuta Avea? He’s back on the islands.
why are my comments not showing up?
Apologies hawaiihoops, first-time posters have to get approved manually. You should be good to go from now on. As for Avea, when I have an update on him, I’ll pass it along.
I guess bows hoops 808 and hawaii hoops already know this, but Avea has scholarship offers from Hawaii, Montana, Wyoming, and Weber State.
Some scouting services has Avea rated as a three-star recruit.
We don’t get those too often.
Isaac Fleming was a three-star recruit.
When is the Rainbow Warrior BB banquet?
Looking forward to this event, congrats to both women’s and men’s teams on a successful basketball season.
