Smith injury update

The number of game days left in the 2015 Manoa College Summer League is winding down. So is the number of current Rainbow Warriors competing in the league.

One of the handful of ‘Bows to show up nightly for the league has been senior point guard Quincy Smith, for National Fire Protection.

Unfortunately, Smith exited his game vs. Electricians Hawaii on Saturday in the first half with what was apparently a dislocated finger. He was said to have gone to a hospital for treatment.

On Sunday, the news from the team was positive: nothing was broken.

Still, one might expect Smith to — as a precaution — miss the remainder of summer league games, which concludes with the playoffs Aug. 4, 6 and 8. Then again, Smith is a tough customer, so you never know.

If there’s a silver lining to that type of injury scare, it’s that it’s right now, during the Hawaii hoops offseason, leaving him plenty of time to recover for preseason practices. Granted, Smith could have to dial things back in coach Eran Ganot’s team summer workouts, which have been fairly in-depth in their instruction.

Forward Mike Thomas, one of the other Rainbows to appear regularly in summer league, had a couple of free throws in the final seconds Saturday for National Fire that could have tied it up. But he went 1-for-2 and Derrick Low hit his free throws at the other end to give the undefeated Electricians (8-0) the win, 79-76. Thomas finished with 11 points.

The other UH players to appear regularly have been Aaron Valdes, Dyrbe Enos and Brocke Stepteau. You can see their stats, along with other league leaders, here.

Some ‘Bows, like Stefan Jankovic and Roderick Bobbitt, elected not to play at all given their existing summer workload, while others — Isaac Fleming, Stefan Jovanovic and Niko Filipovich — tried their hand at it and decided to focus on their workouts. The lost chance to watch these players this summer been something of a disappointment, albeit an understandable one. Thomas conceded Saturday he hasn’t been able to go all out because of the team’s daily demands.

In years to come, it could be a tall order for the league to feature the level of UH participation of two years ago, when just about every ‘Bow played.
