Signing period approaches

We’re one day off from the start of the early (fall) signing period. Hawaii currently has two players expected to sign — Morningside (Calif.) High point guard Gerry Blakes and Serra High (Calif.) power forward Ronnie Stevens.

After his verbal commitment, Stevens initially said he would sign with UH among friends in the late (spring) signing period. But after talking it over with his parents, the 6-9 Stevens elected to get things out of the way as soon as possible — he confirmed as much over the phone today.

Damiene Cain, UH’s biggest remaining target in this early period, told Calihighsports.com he’s planning to make his decision on Friday. Besides UH, his primary choices are Boston College, Colorado, Oregon State and Minnesota.

Looking at the White squad in today’s practice, there was a possible starting-five preview for this weekend’s Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic. Hiram Thompson (PG), Zane Johnson (SG), Joston Thomas (SF), Bill Amis (PF) and Vander Joaquim (C) took the floor at once. Bobby Miles, Bo Barnes, and Douglas Kurtz also saw time on the White team.

The signing period opens for the  UH women’s basketball team as well. Dana Takahara-Dias is expected to sign four players in this early period — two freshmen, a sophomore and a junior. One is expected to be Molokai senior center Kalei Adolpho. Will have details on the others later.

sounds like wbb has also picked it up in the recruiting scene. that is good.

it’s almost too bad that we only have a total of three scholies for the 2011 recruit class. i can’t ever remember when we have locked down recruiting this early in mbb.

    Brian,

When will the MBB Team practice on Thursday, is it open to the public, and what gym?

Hope Coach Dana signs the guard from Lahainaluna.

    Steve,

Unless something changes (always possible), the team practices in the morning on Thursday, from about 7 to 9:30. Should be open. Couldn’t tell you for sure if they’d be in the Stan Sheriff Center or Gym 2, but most likely one of those two.

Keep up the good work with the updates.

Sure seems like there is quite a buzz surrounding this new team.

BMC, you see them everyday it seems, is this team going to be last in the WAC as projected by the coaches and media. What does your gut tell you?

This years team looks promising with the caliber of athletes Coach Gib has brought in. I think it is a good mix of talents as we seem to have all the pieces being put together. Coach is right in saying another recruiting class or two and we’ll be rocking and rolling for sure. Glad most of the boys coming in have a good 3-4 years to play. From the looks of things I think Joston Thomas is definitely a guy who will be beastin this year along with Bill Amis. At the 2 guard Bo Barnes is deadly from long-range and Zane should be in for a big year after sitting out. Glad we got actual pure shooting guards this time around. I hope our bigs Kurtz and Vander can be the bangers we need in the paint. Vander seems like a guy who could be a monster down low once he comes into his own. At the point I’ll admit I’m not much of a Hiram Thompson fan but it’s good to have his experience and steady hand. I think Bobby Miles will be the best of that group and will be the starter once Hiram graduates. Salter if he can heal quick would bring some much needed speed and quickness with the ball in his hands. Anyway, looks like our Warrior team is coming up and I got feel good vibes that we will dominate very soon! Good luck Coach in locking down these recruits, Stevens, Blakes, and hopefully Cain.

    Brian,

What’s the scoops on the Brazilian dude that supposedly already visited? Any background on him besides the youtube video? Seems like a Euro type player, big guy that can shoot from outside?

    Hey Pauoa,

I’m currently looking into him, to see if he is a legitimate UH prospect.

    Hey BB,

Thanks for the feedback. There is indeed a buzz. Yes, I’m at practice every day (unless Coach Arnold closes them to the media, which happened for a week). I don’t believe they’re going to finish last. I picked them fifth, which was pretty generous, judging by what the rest of the coaches and media selected UH as. But I think they have the potential to do it … especially with so much talent depleted from the WAC this year.
