Passing the rock

Hey Hawaii hoops fans! Got some personal news here for you.

We’re undergoing some reshuffling of roles in the Star-Advertiser sports department, and for yours truly that means a new assignment.

Effective pretty much immediately, I’m going to be a general assignment sports reporter, focused on UH sports coverage and helping our online content. Exactly how much of each remains to be hammered out.

You’re in very experienced hands as far as your UH men’s hoops content, as Stephen Tsai has agreed to helm our coverage in addition to his football and baseball beats. Definitely a crowded plate for him, but it all involves things in his wheelhouse.

I will assist on football, basketball, and many of the smaller sports as well. Hopefully, this gives me a chance to give you a dab of fresh perspective.

This blog space will remain, though in exactly what capacity remains to be seen. It might branch out from just basketball to general analysis and thoughts after various game coverage.

It’s been a very interesting last 10-plus years for me on the Rainbow Warriors beat (and for most of that span, the Rainbow Wahine hoops beat as well). There’s been four men’s head coaches of wide-ranging personalities (Bob Nash, Gib Arnold, Benjy Taylor, and Eran Ganot), countless more memorable players, an NCAA Tournament appearance and an NCAA investigation.

What a ride.

Thanks to those who chimed in on my coverage, positive or negative, via email, comments, or in person over the years. The feedback was almost always welcome.

Looking forward to what comes next.

    This will be good for your growth Brian. And you will still have loyal readers like myself enjoying your point of view.

    You did a great job giving us the breaking news on UH basketball and also responding to our emails.
    Also Billy previously did a good job on baseball.

    Once I commented on your board to liken your fun lead sentences to Stephen Tsai’s word smithing,
    or maybe it was the other way around.

    Before you finally pass the BB stick to ST, I hope “effective pretty much immediately” leaves wiggle room for you to cover the BB ride to Australia;
    you deserve to close out by covering the fruition of the (Australian) Process (UH Kine) that you’ve been reporting about even when the outlines could barely be seen and doubters abounded.

    What everyone could always see, it shines so brightly, is your great dedication to giving readers a true, insightful, and comprehensive accounting of the team;
    thank you for ten years of grinding and sweating to give readers ever fresh perspectives.

    As for “general assignment,” you’ll ride that one very well as well;
    although you managed to relate it to basketball, you showed great breadth in your moving tribute to your Dad.

    I’ll be looking for your byline wherever it lands.

    YOU DID AN EXCELLENT JOB AT COVERING MEN’S BASKETBALL.

    This better be a promotion.

    Make women’s basketball more appealing to people.

    Mr. McInnis, you were paid to be at those Bob Nash era games.

    I was there by choice.

    One word: Parghalava.
