Gym II renovations nearing completion

A major facilities upgrade is nearly complete at the Manoa lower campus.

Within perhaps a week, a climate-controlled, fully refurbished Gym II will be ready for use by the Hawaii men’s and women’s basketball teams. That’s the primary practice facility on campus outside of the Stan Sheriff Center.

It’s a $9-10 million project for Gym II and I. Gym I renovations will commence once Gym II is done. UH athletic director David Matlin has called the improvements “game-changers.”

One of the main drawbacks of Gym II previously was its susceptibility to the elements. On especially humid days, the hardwood would become slick, rendering it dangerous to practice on.

There was a setback due to Hurricane Lane-related flooding through the Gym II floor in late August, and work is still underway on the Nagatani Academic Center underneath. But work on Gym II itself proceeded on schedule.

Teams are expected to be able to use the facility for the upcoming Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic.

Former players expressed excitement about the upgrade.

Better start planning for its next renovation because our state can’t maintain anything soon it will be destroyed again. That is what Matlin needs to improve or he needs to head out the door.

Need to demolish Klum Gym and replace it with something that is not an eyesore on lower campus. That thing is the most ugly looking thing there. Definitely something you don’t want your prospective recruits to see. A big piece of trash right behind a pretty good looking SSC.

A lot of history at Klum.

What the university could do is put a plaque on the building.

Treat it like a historical site.

Just tell the recruit that he/she never has to play there.
