Gameday: Howard

Hawaii has faced some dangerous individual scorers this season. Nevada’s Marqueze Coleman, Texas Tech’s Devaugntah Williams and Oklahoma’s Buddy Hield come to mind.

Howard’s James Daniel III has outgunned all of the above so far this season at a staggering 29 points per game, leading the nation in both field-goal and free-throw attempts. This guy has the ball in his hands a lot.

UH will run different defenders at him to try to keep him off balance, but it’ll start with point guard Roderick Bobbitt, who definitely seemed to have the Bison’s attention leading into the game if coach Kevin Nickelberry’s words were any indication.

For those of you concerned about the junior class bolting because of the 2016-17 postseason ban laid down by the NCAA, those players — Aaron Valdes, Mike Thomas, Stefan Jankovic, Stefan Jovanovic — have so far said they are undecided on their future and will wait things out until the end of the season.

That’s probably about the best-case response you could’ve hoped for from the affected players at this point.

UH is scheduled to have a big meeting Monday on the decision whether or not to appeal.

More to come on that in the form of a full story in the near future.
