2014 G Fleming visits

Could Isaac Fleming be the Hawaii basketball team’s first verbal commitment for the 2014 class?

Fleming (not to be confused with ex-‘Bow Rod Flemings), a 6-foot-3, 190-pound left-handed combo guard from Delaware, is visiting the UH campus through Saturday and is weighing a scholarship offer from the Rainbow Warriors. He was on hand for the UH football team’s season-opening loss against USC on Thursday.

Fleming, listed as a three-star recruit by Rivals.com, is about to enter his senior season at Massanutten Military Academy (Va.) and has his top three choices narrowed down to UH, Wake Forest and Murray State, he said. He has yet to visit the latter two (planned for October).

“Staying out here, and seeing how everything is so friendly and family-based, I think I might not even waste my time,” Fleming said in a phone interview.

He plans to sign a letter of intent in November during the early signing period for 2014.

“I can create for myself and I can create for my team,” he said when asked to describe his game. “I’m a point guard, but I can defend the 2 and the 3 because of my size and the way I defend. I can do a little bit of, I wouldn’t say everything, but a little bit of some things to help my team win.

“I come from a place where nothing’s really handed to you. You have to go get it, go earn it. That’s how I was raised, so I just go after it. Every chance I get, I take advantage of it,” Fleming said.

Should he choose UH, he said distance from home won’t be an issue; he was used to living away from home in Delaware after moving to Washington, D.C., after his sophomore year of high school.

Fleming already visited Delaware and Albany. NC State and Georgia have also expressed interest.

There’s still a chance UH could add another walk-on for the 2013-14 season. Guard Warren Oishi has emerged as the likely candidate should an addition be made, as he is enrolled in school at Manoa for the fall.

UH coach Gib Arnold said this week there was no rush for determining any further additions for his team, which already stands at 17 on the roster.

Junior college prospect Malik Fields had a solid mid-range game in the Manoa summer league, but he apparently decided to go for more playing time elsewhere. Wesley Armbrust, another walk-on hopeful, isn’t believed to be in the picture, either.
