Rekindling the Blaze

By Stephen Tsai on June 22, 2008

By some players, he is jokingly referred to as “Blake Soares” because of what they perceive as his resemblance to UH linebacker Blaze Soares. But Josh Andrews has his own impressive credentials. The 2007 Mililani High graduate was an All-State player in 2006. In 2005, he was the O‘ahu Interscholastic Association Western Division’s Defensive Player of the Year. Andrews has been working out with UH players four times a week. He hopes to join the Warriors as a non-scholarship player. […]

"Happy" days are here again

By Stephen Tsai on June 21, 2008

One of our favorites is rejoining the Warrior football team. David “Happy” Gilmore, a safety who completed his eligibility in 2003, will serve as a graduate assistant this season. Gilmore will work with the defensive backs. “This is a great opportuity,” Gilmore said. “I couldn’t pass it up.” After earning his bachelor’s degree in travel industry management, Gilmore managed a popular restaurant in Waikiki. He then moved to San Diego, where he has worked in the group-benefits business. UH associate […]

For Greg McMackin, the family circle is complete. Cabaret, the family horse, has arrived. Kayla McMackin e-mailed us this picture of her and Cabaret. By Stephen Tsai on June 19, 2008

Congrats to Bobby Nash, who signed a pro contract with the Shiga Lakestars of the Basketball Japan League. Ralph Omoto, our pal and a blog lurker, has captured Bobby Nash’s career in pictures. Our planning committee has rented the Ed Wong Hospitality Room in the Stan Sheriff Center. […]

Konrath will transfer

By Stephen Tsai on June 18, 2008

Defensive end Kevin Konrath said he is requesting a release from his football scholarship. Konrath said he wishes to transfer, although he has not decided on a destination. “It’s a lot of things,” said Konrath, who redshirted as a freshman last season. “I don’t want to finger-point things.” Konrath, who was raised in Chicago, said he enjoyed his time at UH. He said he also wants to leave on a good note. Konrath said he will take a summer-school class […]

Date change for Heather McMackin's clinic

By Stephen Tsai on June 17, 2008

Heather McMackin’s football clinic for women has been moved from Aug. 21 to Aug. 19. Apparently, the annual Pigskin Pigout is reserved for the Aug. 21. Greg McMackin said more than 100 women have signed up for the clinic. * * * After much pleading (whining) from a certain Punchbowl-based reader, it finally was time to show the big men working out. Here’s offensive line coach Brian Smith. While the players are working out on their own in one area, […]

Here he is: * * * Slotback Miah Ostrowski has been a regular at unsupervised workouts: * * * […]

Living the dream

By Stephen Tsai on June 15, 2008

Too often we believe that “chasing the dream” means pursuing a pro career. And then, every so often, we’re reminded that playing for UH is the dream. Last week, for instance, linebacker Kawika Fuga participated in unsupervised workouts. He said he hopes to join the Warriors as a walk-on. Fuga shared the middle linebacker’s job on Leilehua High’s state championship team. His first cousin is Lui Fuga, who was a six-year Warrior defensive tackle. Kawika Fuga attended Waianae High through […]
