UH lands California QB

By Stephen Tsai on July 16, 2008

Corey Nielsen, who led California High School quarterbacks in passing last season, today accepted a scholarship offer from UH. Nielsen, of Gahr High School, threw for 4,363 yards and 35 touchcdowns last season. “Hawai‘i feels like home,” Nielsen said. “I’m so happy to be a Warrior.” UH is hoping to sign two quarterbacks for the 2009 recruiting class. And here are two photos taken by Corey’s uncle, Jon Nielsen: * * * Greg McMackin is attending the ESPYs tonight in […]

Billy Ray Stutzmann accepts UH offer

By Stephen Tsai on July 15, 2008

One of the state’s top high school prospects — wide receiver Billy Ray Stutzmann of Saint Louis School — yesterday accepted a UH football scholarship offer from the Warriors. What’s more, Stutzmann is seeking to graduate in December, allowing him to enroll at UH in January and participate in spring training. Stutzmann’s commitment is one of the earliest in the program’s history, and it jump-starts Greg McMackin’s efforts to secure the state’s top players. Stutzmann is the younger brother of […]

Colt signs, then meets with heart patient

By Stephen Tsai on July 14, 2008

Colt Brennan signed a four-year, $1.8-million contract with the Washington Redskins, then immediately paid it forward with a good deed. “It feels great to sign,” Brennan said. Soon after, Brennan made the 45-minute drive to Washington D.C., where he had lunch with Joshua Miyazawa and his family. Miyazawa is a 5-year-old boy from Hawai‘i who underwent heart surgery. His favorite player is Brennan. Miyazawa is in D.C. to play in a tee-ball game on the White House lawn. “The lunch […]

Kids' Day, myki's birthday

By Stephen Tsai on July 13, 2008

Yesterday’s UH Coaches Camp drew 472 kids (ages 5-12) — more than double last year’s total. Even more remarkable, as of Friday night, there were only three pre-registered students. The 469 walk-up campers forced UH officials to scramble for extra T-shirts and Otter Pops. Members of the UH women’s basketball team helped speed along the sign-ups. In all, the event, which concludes with this morning’s 9-to-11 session, has been a success. * * * Here are the Rainbow Wahine basketball […]

McMackin: No decision on Tuioti

By Stephen Tsai on July 12, 2008

Greg McMackin said he not yet decided who will fill the job that essentially serves as a recruiting coordinator. Tony Tuioti, who attended last night’s banquet, is a finalist and the leading candidate. “He’s in the interview stage right now,” McMackin said. “I want to make it clear that no decision has been made. We’re going through the process.” Tuioti today said he has not received an offer. “On Monday, I hope, they’ll have a final decision,” Tuioti said. “I’m […]

Mahalo

By Stephen Tsai on July 11, 2008

Thank you. As the host of this reader-driven blog, I am humbled, overwhelmed and extremely grateful for the incredible support. Our readers represent the best Hawai‘i has to offer. That was apparent during last night’s second anniversary party, which was coordinated and produced entirely by our readers. With our open-door policy, we had close to 200 folks (although only Curtis Murayama, Princess Leila, Curtis Lum, Leslie Kawamoto, brother Mike, Kortney Borthwick, Corie Soto, Tia Ward and Liane Yim were the […]

Will a Saint march home?

By Stephen Tsai on July 10, 2008

The word on the Boulevard is that a 2007 Saint Louis School graduate now at a school in Berkeley is seeking to transfer to Manoa. The defensive end, who is 6 feet 7, has requested — but has not been granted — a release from his football scholarship. If he were to transfer, with or without a release, he would have to redshirt this coming season, after which he would have three remaining seasons of eligibility. But he’s a great […]

Colt gives back

By Stephen Tsai on July 9, 2008

Despite not having a contract with the Washington Redskins yet, Colt Brennan is donating $1,000 to Na Koa, the UH football team’s booster club. * * * Except during games, Keala Watson is a gentleman. He is a husband. He is a church leader. He helps friends in need. Still, while on the field he might be Warren Sapp, off the field he is not a sap. So, really, the person who “borrowed” his new Under Armour shoes should bring […]
