Hands up!

By Stephen Tsai on August 17, 2008

Greg McMackin has implemented a new policy: Don’t take a knee. With the increased emphasis on conditioning, the Warriors have been told not to ever hunch over, with their hands on their knees, during practices. “We dont let anybody bend over,” McMackin said. “If they bend over, they’re too tired to play.” The Warriors have worked their way into shape in a program implemented by Saint Louis Rams’ conditioning coach Dana LeDuc and maintained by UH’s Mel deLaura and Tommy […]

A very happy birthday for Colt

By Stephen Tsai on August 16, 2008

Colt Brennan threw the go-ahead 33-yard touchdown pass to Jason Goode to lead the Redskins to a 13-10 victory over the New York Jets. Today also is Brennan’s 25th birthday. * * * The Warriors received one point in The Associated Press’ poll. * * * • Nate Nasca moved from right slotback to right wideout today. He looked impressive, filling in for Malcolm Lane. • Cameron Allen-Jones continues to impress as the defensive right end. Starter John Fonoti (hamstring) […]

Right move at right time

By Stephen Tsai on August 15, 2008

It was indeed the right time for the Warriors to name Brent Rausch as the No. 1 quarterback, even if the season does not open for another two weeks. The Warriors were in need of a boost after Wednesday’s practices — the worst since training camp opened Aug. 4. It appeared the Warriors had hit the proverbial wall, in this case two practices that day totaling five hours. Greg Alexander, who had been superb until then, was pressing — and […]

Signs point to Rausch being No. 1

By Stephen Tsai on August 14, 2008

All signs point to Brent Rausch being named UH’s No. 1 quarterback. The coaches made a decision after today’s practice, and an official announcement will be made tomorrow. “We’ve had over 1,000 snaps (per quarterback) to evaluate,” head coach Greg McMackin said. “That’s just counting live competitive snaps. We’ve been evaluating.. One of the players is moving up every day. It’s just time to make a move.” Rausch has played the best in every practice since Saturday, and today he […]

And justice for all …

By Stephen Tsai on August 13, 2008

Now that Herman Frazier has returned to his hometown as Temple’s associate AD, the key figures in January’s drama have all found perfect fits. Jim Donovan was the right choice to succeed Frazier as UH’s AD. June Jones and Greg McMackin get to run football programs. And Frazier gets to start over — with the help of his $300,000-plus UH buyout — in a city that he not only knows well but regards him as a hero. * * * […]

Blaze, Rocky to miss start of season

By Stephen Tsai on August 12, 2008

Leftside linebacker Blaze Soares and defensive tackle Rocky Savaiigaea will miss the Aug. 30 season opener against Florida — and, most likely, a few more games — because of injuries. Soares has been diagnosed with a torn gastrocnemius, a calf muscle in his left leg. The recovery period is between six and eight weeks. He is wearing a cast. Savaiigaea has been diagnosed with a tear in his left triceps. He also is wearing a cast. His recovery period is […]

Early test for Blaze

By Stephen Tsai on August 11, 2008

• Leftside linebacker Blaze Soares suffered what is being described as a strained calf muscle during today’s drills. He was taken by motorized cart to the training room for medical tests. He will undergo an MRI at 4 a.m. — yes, that’s before dawn —Tuesday to determine the severity of the injury. • With Soares and right-side linebacker Adam Leonard (tight hamstring) sidelined, R.J. Kiesel-Kauhane played on the left side, Solomon Elimimian moved from the middle to the right, and […]

Defensive end commits to UH

By Stephen Tsai on August 10, 2008

Defensive end Veni Manu of Mililani High School today accepted a football scholarship from the Warriors. “I’m very happy to be a Warrior,” Manu told the Warrior Beat. “I think Coach Mack is a great coach, and I want to play for him.” Manu also has received outstanding tutoring at Mililani. The defensive line coach is Ma‘a Tanuvasa, one of the best to play for the Warrriors. Manu is 6 feet 4 and 227 pounds. At the Pacific Islands Athletic […]
