Defensive lineman Marcus Malepeai of Radford High School is the latest prospect to accept a scholarship offer from the Warriors. The elder Malepeai was a UH offensive lineman in the 1990s, and now coaches at Kailua High and is a member of the musical group Three Plus (“Undercover […]

A bowl of rivalry

By Stephen Tsai on September 17, 2008

The coaching staffs have been divided — linebacker Adam Leonard and defensive tackle Keala Watson will lead one side, linebacker Solomon Elimimian and center John Estes will lead the other — and the smack-talking has started for tomorrow’s Scout Bowl. “We’ll just dub them,” Leonard said of the Elimimian-Estes team, “the losing team.” The Leonard-Watson (L-W) team believes it has the advantage. During the offseason conditioning program, 10 seniors had to draft teams for the Super Games competition. “We all […]

AhSoon to miss six weeks

By Stephen Tsai on September 16, 2008

Keith AhSoon received relatively good news when he was diagnosed with a third-degree sprain of the medial collateral ligament in his left knee. AhSoon will miss six weeks of play. It was feared he would be lost for the rest of the season. With a bye this weekend, AhSoon might miss only five games. He will not need surgery. AhSoon’s anterior cruciate ligament was not damaged. “It is good news,” head coach Greg McMackin said. “I’m glad he’ll be able […]

Graunke said he hopes to play against Spartans

By Stephen Tsai on September 15, 2008

Quarterback Tyler Graunke told The Advertiser he hopes to play in the Warriors’ next game — Sept. 27 against San Jose State — after X-rays today did not detect a fracture in his right (throwing) hand. He injured the area at the root of his right thumb during Saturday’s 45-7 road loss to Oregon State. X-rays were taken of six sides of the injured area. His right hand still was swollen, and he could not grip a football or shake […]

No time to waste

By Stephen Tsai on September 14, 2008

In 2005, the last time the Warriors had a losing season, there was reason for optimism. Colt Brennan, who would have two more seasons of eligibility, led the nation in touchdown passes that year. Slotbacks Davone Bess and Ryan Grice-Mullins were freshmen. Linebackers Solomon Elimimian and Adam Leonard also were freshmen. Linebacker Blaze Soares was prepared to join the team the following season, and Jason Rivers also would be back. Those Warriors were young, and the future was filled with […]

Graunke tops injury list

By Stephen Tsai on September 13, 2008

CORVALLIS  — Right-handed quarterback Tyler Graunke suffered an injury to his right thumb and right wrist in today’s 45-7 loss to Oregon State. Graunke will have X-rays tomorrow after the Warriors return from the Mainland. They are staying overnight in Oakland. Graunke’s right hand and wrist were wrapped in a brace. He said he cannot bend the thumb. The Warriors have a bye next week. If Graunke is not available for the Sept. 27 WAC opener against San Jose State, […]

Oh, as in Oregon

By Stephen Tsai on September 12, 2008

EUGENE — We’re here. The Warriors practiced today in the University of Oregon’s stadium, which is about a 40-minute drive from Oregon State’s campus. The walk-through became a sprint-through. The Warriors were finished after 35 minutes. After that, the Warriors took the Green Tour — green as in envy. Money might not buy happiness, but it pays for Oregon’s state-of-the-art weight room. The training room room looks ike a club, with egg-shell-white lighting and contemporary furniture. There also is a […]

Thursday update

By Stephen Tsai on September 11, 2008

• Leon Wright-Jackson today resumed practicing. He said he has recovered from strained arches. • UH has decided to go with last week’s left side of the offensive line — Keith “The Bear” AhSoon at left tackle and Brysen Ginlack at left guard. The No. 1 left tackle, Laupepa Letuli, won’t make the trip. He is recovering from a slight tear in his left shoulder. Wideout Jett Jasper takes Letuli’s place on the travel roster. * * * Wideout Dylan […]
