Speedy DB commits to UH

By Stephen Tsai on November 11, 2008

Kevin Williams, a speedy corner from Los Medanos College (PIttsburg, Calif.), has accepted a UH football scholarship. Williams is 5-10 and 175 pounds. He said he ran 40 yards in 4.34 seconds at a scouting combine at Chabot College the past summer. He also can play slotback and running back. Some compare him to Ryan Mouton, at least potential-wise.

The Blaze debate

By Stephen Tsai on November 10, 2008

Whether linebacker Blaze Soares is eligible to play in 2010 depends on the rule interpretation for the year he spent after his high school graduation. Because he did not meet all of the eligibility requirements for an incoming freshman, he attended a school that does not offer football during the 2005-2006 academic year. He then enrolled at UH-Manoa in August 2006. The NCAA allows each player five years to play four seasons. At issue is when Soares’ eligibility clock started. […]

Going into overtime

By Stephen Tsai on November 9, 2008

The longest road trip of the season is over — well, except , for several UH football coaches. They will remain on the road to meet with the coaches and school counselors of prospects. The meetings are not only scheduled with the 2009 class in mind. UH is trying to establish — and maintain — long-term relations in several recruiting areas. In addition to Hawai‘i and American Samoa, the Warriors consider California, Texas, Utah and Las Vegas as primary recruiting […]

UH wins, 42-30

By Stephen Tsai on November 8, 2008

Nice game for the Warriors, whose offense really did well against the Aggies’ complicated defense. The receivers were forced to do more reading-on-the-go to help out Greg Alexander, who had his best game of the season. There was a little controversy at the end when David Veikune was whistled for an unsportsmanlike penalty. Veikune and an Aggie were trash-talking the entire game. Veikune did not know that he had KO’d the Aggie while blocking on an interception return. After the […]

Proud parents

By Stephen Tsai on November 7, 2008

Davone and Rachel Bess are the proud parents of Kyrah Imani Kealohimaikalani Bess. Here she is: * * * So, I’m in the Denver airport, pretending to mind my own business, when I run into one of June Jones’ friends. Apparently a bunch of guys from Hawai‘i are going to Dallas this weekend to attend the SMU game and hang out with Jones. Then the guy says: “June’s looking forward to coming home.” Huh? According to the guy, UH and […]

The hurry-up defense

By Stephen Tsai on November 6, 2008

Greg McMackin always has had a need for speed. And, so, moving defensive end Francis Maka to defensive tackle fits in with a strategy McMackin has used repeatedly at UH. When McMackin was hired as a defensive coordinator at UH in 1999, he realized he had little time to overhaul a defense that was a carryover from an 0-12 season. He improved speed by moving cornerbacks to safety, safeties to outside linebacker, outside linebackers to defensive end, and ends to […]

Pilares expected to start at slotback

By Stephen Tsai on November 5, 2008

Greg McMackin said that Kealoha Pilares is expected to start at slotback in Saturday’s road game against New Mexico State. McMackin said Pilares had a good practice today. Pilares moved from running back during spring training, and was the backup slotback in the opener against Florida. After that, he moved to running back. Although he sometimes practiced at slotback, he was used almost exclusively as a running back in games. He missed the past two games because of  a sprained […]

Alexander is the 1 and only

By Stephen Tsai on November 4, 2008

The announcement that UH will scrap the platoon system and go with Greg Alexander as the lone No. 1 quarterback is a continuation of  plan that had been in the works for more than a week. It was always believed that Inoke Funaki was best fit as a read-option quarterback, a solid change-up to the usual run-and-shoot offense. He still will be used in that role, and he is expected to play in every game. But  by ditching the “platoon” […]
