Smethurst won't be back

By Stephen Tsai on January 13, 2009

Justine Smethurst, who went on a one-year sabbatical to pitch for Australia’s national team in the 2008 Olympics, apparently will not return to the UH softball team. Smethurst, who has two year of NCAA eligibility remaining, was scheduled to enroll in school yesterday. Smethurst was the ace of the staff in 2006 and 2007, when the Rainbow Wahine reached the Super Regionals. * * * Former UH DBs Ryan Keomaka and Myron Newberry were selected in the recent United National […]

UH’s spring semester started today. Waylon Lolotai, who signed a few years ago and then went on a church mission, is enrolled at UH this semester. He will compete at linebacker in spring practice. * * * Add Oregon, Oregon State, California, Arizona and Arizona State now pursuing UH recruit Iuta Tepa. Those schools join UCLA and Washington in trying to poach Tepa, who gave a verbal commitment to UH a few months ago. * * * The Corey Nielsen […]

Colt makes the list

By Stephen Tsai on January 11, 2009

It always appeared as if Colt Brennan were an ambassador for Hawai‘i. Maybe he does have political juice. Colt has been invited to attend the Jan. 20 presidential inauguration, according to his father, Terry Brennan. “I hope he wears matching shoes,” Terry mused. Terry also said Colt had successful arthroscopic surgery to correct a “meniscus” problem. The procedure took about about 10 minutes, and Colt already has resumed weight training. Colt arrives in Hawai‘i Feb. 3, and will stay for […]

Veikune invited to Senior Bowl

By Stephen Tsai on January 10, 2009

David Veikune has been invited to play in the Jan. 24 Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala. By accepting, he had to drop out of the East West Shrine Game in Houston. He joins long-snapper Jake Ingram, who received a Senior Bowl  invitation the past week. Veikune projects to play defensive end in a 4-3 alignment or outside linebacker in a 3-4. * * * Word on the street is that Ray Hisatake is moving back to offensive tackle. He was […]

Somebody didn't get enough sleep

By Stephen Tsai on January 9, 2009

It appears the Warrior volleyball team has made the right moves in correcting the problems of last season. Freshmen — and future stars — Steven Hunt and Gus Tuaniga have energized the team, Josh Walker has embraced the role of go-to hitter, and middles Steven Grgas and Matt “Dragon” Rawson now are threats as attackers. But the program still could use some fixing, in such areas as: • Crowd placement: The folks working in the office last night questioned the […]

Split decision

By Stephen Tsai on January 8, 2009

Using the wisdom of Solomon — the Biblical guy, although I’m sure Elimimian would have come up with a good one, too — we’ll split the prize. Kekoa and Tarai each get two tickets to tonight’s matches. Call me at 525-8051 (and leave a number, if I don’t answer) to figure out a way to claim your prizes. Thanks again to UHfan808. * * * Nine months later, it appears to be a good thing that Davone Bess was not […]

Ingram invited to Senior Bowl, NFL combine

By Stephen Tsai on January 7, 2009

Long-snapper Jake Ingram has been invited to participate in the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., and NFL combine in Indianapolis. He is only one of two long-snappers invited to those elite evaluation events. “I’m honored,” said Ingram, who is training in West Lake, Calif., a suburb of Los Angeles. * * * Destin “D-Stew” Stewart, an all-state receiver from Oklahoma City’s Douglass High, has accepted a football scholarship from the Warriors. Stewart said he is 6 feet 4 and 200 […]
