UH lands d-end

By Stephen Tsai on September 23, 2009

The Warriors yesterday secured a commitment from defensive end Siaki Cravens of Long Beach City College. Cravens, who is 6 feet 3 and 240 pounds, signed with Utah in February 2008. He redshirted with the Utes last year. After the spring semester, he decided to transfer. Cravens said he received interest from USC and UCLA, but opted to commit to UH because of the Warriors’ coaching staff and team’s traditionally strong defensive line. Four former Warriors were selected in the […]

Home

The Warriors arrived safely in town this morning. They have two destinations: Beach or bed. It’s been a long 12 days. * * * * * So, after three games, including a tough loss to UNLV, what have we learned? • UNLV really needs this series. The crowd was under 30,000, and it appeared at least a third were wearing green. In this down economy, the Hawai‘i visitors provided a lift. • The Warriors miss defensive ends David Veikune (now […]

Game day: UNLV

By Stephen Tsai on September 19, 2009

LAS VEGAS — We passed the giant tailgate party on Main Street while driving to Sam Boyd Stadium. The place was packed. We’re estimating a few thousand. There were 52 buses rented to bring tail-gaters from downtown to Boyd Stadium. * * * * * Josh Rice,  who was raised in Las Vegas, is a UH co-captain tonight. * * * * * As part of the budget cuts, UNLV decided to stop offering meals in the press box. While […]

Back at ya

By Stephen Tsai on September 18, 2009

LAS VEGAS — Except for the first five minutes, UNLV’s football practices are closed to the media. Television reporters are allowed to do interviews before practices; print reporters do interviews after practice. In a game of spy vs. spy this week, UH closed its practices to UNLV’s regular reporters. (The practices were open to reporters from Hawai‘i.) UH even required the Vegas reporters to do only phone interviews with UH players. That’s more lenient than some WAC schools, who do […]
