Gib Arnold is Sunday's chat guest

By Stephen Tsai on March 20, 2010

Newly hired UH basketball coach Gib Arnold will answer your questions tomorrow on the Warrior Beat Show, which will begin at about  9 a.m. You may post your questions on tomorrow’s blog entry. * * * * * Historians remain puzzled as to how Stan Sheriff, a competent athletic director with keen judgment, could have hired Frank Arnold as UH basketball coach in 1985. The answer could be found in the interview. In conference rooms and living rooms, Arnold was […]

Gib Arnold

By Stephen Tsai on March 19, 2010

Advertiser writers Dayton Morinaga and Ferd Lewis are reporting that Gib Arnold is expected to be named the new UH head basketball coach, as soon as tomorrow. * * * * * The Board of Regents’ instructions were very specific: The athletic department should be run like a business. As a result, five-year plans are being crafted, buzz words such as “under-funded” have replaced “debt” in power-point presentations, and Bob Nash was not retained as head basketball coach. Business decision, […]

Putting the pro in program

By Stephen Tsai on March 18, 2010

While I imagine each of the basketball candidates who interviewed for the UH job is smart and very capable, there seems to be a lack of the “wow” factor. Maybe it has to do with the preference that the candidate have mostly a college basketball background. But I think it would have been nice for the call to go out to more coaches with pro basketball experience. It worked 11 years ago, when UH hired June Jones, a two-time NFL […]

My number is 256-0223. * * * * * Big thanks to Kelly Majam and Kaia Parnaby for appearing on today’s Warrior Beat Show. * * * * * I would say it’s interesting that the Washington Redskins signed quarterback Rex Grossman, who played for Redskin offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan in Houston last […]

Rocky sequel?

By Stephen Tsai on March 16, 2010

For a variety of reasons, it does not appear the NCAA will have a near-future ruling on defensive tackle Rocky Savaiigaea’s appeal for an exemption that would allow him to play as a sixth-year senior in 2010. Savaiigaea is pressed with two deadlines: UH’s spring practice opens March 31, and UH’s Pro Day is April 1 in Carson, Calif. Savaiigaea, who has been training in Arizona, is taking on-line classes this semester to remain in good academic standing. UH is […]

By Stephen Tsai on March 14, 2010

As reporters Dayton Morinaga and Ferd Lewis reported in today’s Advertiser, Saint Mary’s assistant Kyle Smith had an in-person interview with UH officials. http://sports.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/20100314/SPORTS0204/3140375&template=UHSports/Gaels++Smith+here+for+interview Smith, who received an endorsement from Pittsburgh (and former UH) coach Jamie Dixon, also has been supported by Virginia coach Tony Bennett. As a Washington State coach, Bennett recruited former Iolani standout Derrick Lowe. * * * * * Na Koa’s executive director’s job is expected to remain as a paid position, although the salary is […]
