Satele awarded scholarship

By Stephen Tsai on August 13, 2010

Liko Satele, who is projected to start at defensive left end, has been awarded a football scholarship. The announcement was made during last night’s team meeting, when head coach Greg McMackin said the search for  pass-rusher had ended. Satele — don’t call him Landon — is a 2007 graduate of Word of Life Academy. He attended Lambuth University (Jackson, Tenn.) for a year  before transferring to UH. He is, of course, the son of Alvis Satele and LeeAnn Satele, and […]

School of Hard Knocks

By Stephen Tsai on August 12, 2010

I like HBO and I love the J-E-T-S, but that was cold for “Hard Knocks” to air the scene where former Warrior lineman Aaron Kia is being released. As Kia told the Warrior Beat, the show took a private moment and made it public. Even UH’s Board of Regents knows that personnel decisions should go into executive decision.  One of the scenes not shown is when former UH linebacker Brashton Satele agrees to carry starting linebacker David Harris’ bags. But […]

Double time

By Stephen Tsai on August 11, 2010

Today is the first time the Warriors will conduct both morning and afternoon practices. But in keeping with the theme of this training camp — learn but don’t burn — technique more than contact will be emphasized. Expect the afternoon session to focus mostly on special teams.  The Warriors managed to run sensible one-on-one drills between the linemen. The rule — which is practical for game purposes — is that nobody hits the ground.  * * * * *  Speaking […]

Managing the Warriors

By Stephen Tsai on August 10, 2010

Fetaiagogo “John” Fonoti said he will be helping the Warriors as a student manager. The work  will pay for his tuition. Fonoti is on track to earn a bachelor’s degree this academic year.  Fonoti probably had the potential to pursue pro-football opportunities. But he skipped UH’s Pro Day in April to work. He said his primary goal now is to earn a degree.  * * * * *  One of the most valuable members of the Warriors is manager Kyle […]

Moniz named No. 1 quarterback

By Stephen Tsai on August 9, 2010

UH head coach Greg McMackin today named Bryant Moniz as the Warriors’ No. 1 quarterback. Barring injury, Moniz will start in the Sept. 2 opener against USC. Last week, the Warriors entered training camp with a top tier of four quarterbacks — Moniz, who started eight games last season; Shane Austin, who started in a road victory over San Jose State in 2009; Brent Rausch, a fifth-year senior who missed all of last season with a broken finger; and second-year […]

J-E-T-S cut Kia

By Stephen Tsai on August 8, 2010

Aaron Kia, former UH offensive lineman, just called to confirm that he was cut by the New York Jets.  He had a nice camp, but it was a numbers game all the way.  * * * * *  While the Oakland Raiders don’t offer the most job security, they do offer opportunities. Lots of them, especially to ball-handling players and cornerbacks. In NFL circles, the Raiders are known for the two-day contracts — bring a player in for,  essentially, a […]

Colt signs with Raiders

By Stephen Tsai on August 7, 2010

Colt Brennan today signed a one-year contract with the Oakland Raiders.  Brennan, who was released by the Washington Redskins Monday, was invited for a tryout with the Raiders this morning. He received good reviews, then was offered a one-year contract. He participated in the Raiders’ afternoon practice.  Brennan was with the Redskins for two years after being their sixth-round pick in 2008. But because he was on injured reserve last year, he has been credited with one full year of […]

Camp Day 2: Freshman QB injured

By Stephen Tsai on August 6, 2010

Freshman quarterback Kevin Spain will undergo season-ending surgery after being diagnosed with a slightly torn ligament in his right shoulder. He said he expects to be fully healthy for spring training.  Corey Nielsen, a second-year freshman who was not on the 105-player roster for training camp, will replace Spain. Nielsen, who has been training in California, will arrive in town Sunday.  * * * * *  Siaki Cravens has moved from outside linebacker to defensive end. * * * * […]
