Game day: Nevada

By Stephen Tsai on October 16, 2010

Colt Brennan is in town. He said he will be attending tonight’s game. * * * * *   It’s probably just me, but I’ve never understood the fascination with UH’s attendance figures and money situation. I suppose it would be important if I were an athletic director, but since I’m not even an athletic writer, and every time I go to a UH event the electricity appears to be working, then UH is doing OK. I mean, do you […]

Friday ramblings

By Stephen Tsai on October 15, 2010

Sure, there have been problems with UH’s return teams this year. Here are some bright spots: • Dustin Blount’s 24.8-yard average is third best in WAC games.  • In WAC games, UH is No. 1 in kickoff returns (23.8 yards). • The kickoff team has not allowed a return past the 50.  * * * * *  A sportscaster said last night that Nevada and UH are chasing Boise State. Not so. The Warriors are in first in the WAC […]

Manoa lettuce

By Stephen Tsai on October 14, 2010

Defensive tackle Kaniela Tuipulotu is known for his arm-wiggling gesture and, according to teammate Vaughn Meatoga, the phrase: “Gotta get the lettuce this year.” Lettuce? “Take it any way you want,” Meatoga said. “That’s our d-line motto.” * * * * *  My former colleague, Dayton Morinaga, has developed a pretty amazing site for UH basketball news. Check it out: Warrior Insider.  * * * * * Avis has selected Liz Kauai as the winner of the Pack It versus […]

Colt auditions with Texans

By Stephen Tsai on October 13, 2010

Former UH quarterback Colt Brennan yesterday worked out for the Houston Texans in what was described as an “exploratory” session, according to his agent, Ryan Tollner.  The Texans do not have an immediate opening on their roster, but wanted to bring in Brennan for a status check in case a spot opened. This was considered a usual NFL procedure, Tollner said.  Brennan was told he impressed the Texans with his skills and health. Brennan underwent four surgeries in his first […]

Who wants a T-shirt?

By Stephen Tsai on October 12, 2010

No, you don’t have to catch a Bow-zooka’d T-shirt to win.  If you wish to receive a Pack It T-shirt (also available at all RainBowTique stores), just post: I’ll be there.  Avis will choose a winner tonight.  * * * * * * The question was posed by KITV’s Robert Kekaula during yesterday’s news conference, and after being deferred — UH’s new buzz word — head coach Greg McMackin later declared to Na Koa members that Bryant Moniz was the […]

Monday ramblings

By Stephen Tsai on October 11, 2010

• Despite the one-sided victory over Fresno State, no Warrior was named WAC Player of the Week. • That’s a shame because Jeramy Bryant, who was UH’s nominee for top defensive player, had a strong game against FS. It wasn’t just he pick-6. He made a few open-field tackles to stop first downs.

Day after

By Stephen Tsai on October 10, 2010

• For Hawaii fans, the best thing about last night’s victory was that it came against an opponent that brought its best. True, the Bulldogs made several key mistakes — most caused by the Warriors — but their effort was relentless. And give credit to FS fans for being in full heckling force. For the Warriors, the victory was earned.  • Give credit to Bryant Moniz, Royce Pollard, Corey Paredes and Vaughn Meatoga for playing through injuries.  • The back […]

Game Day: Fresno State

By Stephen Tsai on October 9, 2010

Big game for the Warriors in what probably will be their last one in Fresno.  It’s a shame the relationship will end when the Bulldogs leave the WAC in 2011 or 2012. There’s nothing like a UH-Fresno State event in Fresno. The Bulldog fans are a lot of fun. I remember back in the day in basketball. Music starts playing, then the Bulldogs jog out of the locker, high-fiving the fans in the front row while circling the court. It […]
