UH is 27th

By Stephen Tsai on October 24, 2010

The Warriors received the 27th-most votes in the AP and USA Today polls, right behind Nevada.  At first glance, that does not make sense, because UH beat Nevada, and the Warriors won yesterday while the Wolf Pack had a bye. But picks aren’t made using bracket formulas, and it’s difficult being a voter.  One of my newspaper coworkers, Ferd Lewis, is an AP voter, and his vote was due at about 7 a.m. Eastern time today. He spent a couple […]

Warriors beat Utah State

By Stephen Tsai on October 23, 2010

LOGAN, Utah — It rained. The Warriors poured.  In the 45-7 victory over Utah State, Alex Green rushed for a career-high 172 yards and four touchdowns (most rushing scores since Glenn Freitas in 1995), and the defense held the Aggies to 181 yards. It was the fewest yards allowed by the Warriors since 2005. Utah State’s Diondre Borel was held to 98 yards in total offense, about 116 below his average.  The Warriors (6-2 overall, 4-0 in the WAC) can […]

Warriors try to weather challenges

By Stephen Tsai on October 22, 2010

OGDEN — Everybody keeps talking about the weather. The forecast for tomorrow’s game is miserable. Rain. Maybe sleet. The Warriors will do, ahem, a “dry” run with this afternoon’s walk-through at Romney Stadium. * * * * *  It will be an interesting situation when Spencer Smith, out since the season opener after suffering a fractured forearm, is cleared to play within the next two weeks. Richard Torres has excelled as a safety. That means Smith either would be part […]

Settling in

By Stephen Tsai on October 21, 2010

OGDEN — The Warriors practiced for 2 hours this afternoon at Weber State’s field. Conditions were nice, although sleet is predicted for tomorrow’s practice at Utah State.  Right tackle Laupepa Letuli and middle linebacker George Daily-Lyles were able to run on the side. Both are recovering from sprained ankles.  Chizzy Dimude worked on kickoff returns, although Dustin Blount is expected to be the No. 1 guy.  And sportscaster Robert Kekaula led the closing cheer. Words are not suitable for a […]

Onward

By Stephen Tsai on October 20, 2010

The Warriors practiced for about 2 hours this morning, then departed for the airport for their trip to Utah State.  Offensive tackle Clayton Laurel and defensive tackle David Hafoka were added to the travel roster. Defensive tackle Geordon Hanohano (sore knee) and cornerback Steven Christian were deleted.  * * * * * *  The Warriors are leaving a day earlier than they did in 2008, when they lost to Utah State. Conditioning will be a factor in this game. Not […]

Tuesday report

By Stephen Tsai on October 19, 2010

  * * * * * *  Everybody seems to think Mana Silva resembles B.J. Penn. Your thoughts?   * * * * * • I watched two wide-angled videos of Nevada’s long punt and kickoff returns against the Warriors. For Warriors fans, the hopeful conclusion is both breakdowns are correctable. On the kick return, the kickoff was inadvertently placed in the middle instead of wide of the hashmark, the intended target. There also appeared to be at least two […]

Paredes wins WAC award

By Stephen Tsai on October 18, 2010

Linebacker Corey Paredes has been named the WAC’s Defensive Player of the Week.  Paredes had nine tackles and forced two fumbles, including one near the goal line that resulted in a touchback, in the Warriors’ 27-21 victory over Nevada. * * * * *  Through the generosity of a player’s family, we have a T-shirt of a senior player to give away. To enter the drawing, please post: I love college football.  Avis picks a winner tonight. * * * […]

Warriors are 29th; Bess gets paid

By Stephen Tsai on October 17, 2010

Yes, we know that there are no ranking placements awarded for “also receiving votes.” But it is impressive the Warriors received eight points, tying them for 29th, in the AP poll. The Warriors received votes from David Jones, Jon Werner, Sal Interdonato and Tom Mulhern.  Here’s how the voting went: AP voting. “Ferd” gave his No. 1 vote to Boise State.  * * * * *  Davone Bess just agreed to a contract extension that will make him one of […]
