A sensible deal

By Stephen Tsai on December 11, 2010

To understand the triumph of the football Warriors joining the Mountain West, go back to 1998. As one UH official said: The Mountain West was created to get away from UH.  Now, the Mountain West realizes what it should have known then: The Warriors bring a lot to the table. Even Boise State, Fresno State and Nevada — all of whom supported the invitation — realize that.  From a population of about 1.5 million, UH’s pay-per-view and television contract generates […]

2-for-1 day: UH to MWC, Big West

By Stephen Tsai on December 10, 2010

UH officially joints the Mountain West in football and the Big West in non-football sports beginning July 1, 2012. UH will contribute “cost sharing” — travel subsidies — to visiting team, as well as turn over the football TV rights to the Mountain West and national TV rights for non-football sports to the Big West. UH will not have to pay an entry fee to either league. It will forfeit its share of WAC money for the 2010-2011 academic year […]

A mountain Dew commits to UH

By Stephen Tsai on December 9, 2010

Ben Dew, a 6-foot-4, 300-pound offensive lineman from New Zealand, will be joining the Warriors in January.  Dew actually won’t be going on scholarship until July, but he will be taking UH classes during the 2011 spring semester. Dew’s sister, Rebecca, is a member of the Rainbow Wahine basketball team.  Dew was born in Florida, and has lived in Tennessee, New Zealand and, for a year, in Hawaii. He played for Word of Life Academy in 2009 before moving to […]

By Stephen Tsai on December 8, 2010

The Warriors picked up two more verbal commitments from receivers — Trevor Davis of Alhambra High in Martinez, Calif., and Cecil Doe of North Dakota State College of Science.  Davis is 6-1, 165 pounds, and claims to run 40 yards in 4.45 seconds. He joins the Warriors on the Fourth of July (his birthday). His second cousin is Donovan McNabb.  Here is his highlight video: Trevor Davis.  Doe is 6-3, 212 and claims to run 40 yards in 4.38 seconds. […]

Warriors land a slotback

By Stephen Tsai on December 7, 2010

Ellis Henderson, a wideout/cornerback from Skyview High (Vancouver, Wash.), said he will sign with the Warriors in February.  Henderson, who is 6 feet 1 and 180, has been told he will compete at slotback in training camp. He said he can run 40 yards in under 4.5 seconds.  Henderson, who also plays baseball, is the second cousin of Rickey Henderson, the Hall of Fame outfielder who is the record-holder for steals and run scored. Here’s his highlight video: Ellis Henderson. […]

Salas, Paredes, Silva named All-WAC 1st team

By Stephen Tsai on December 5, 2010

Slotback Greg Salas, linebacker Corey Paredes and safety Mana Silva were named to the All-WAC first team.  Quarterback Bryant Moniz, slotback Kealoha Pilares, running back Alex Green, right tackle Laupepa Letuli, right guard Adrian Thomas, defensive tackle Kaniela Tuipulotu, and kicker Scott Enos named to second team.  Who got robbed? Greg McMackin should have been Coach of the Year. Jeramy Bryant should have been second-team cornerback. Pilares probably should have been on the first team.  Oh, well, congrats to all.  […]

Poll positions for UH

By Stephen Tsai on December 5, 2010

The Warriors moved up to No. 24 in today’s Associated Press poll, and entered at No. 25 in the USA Today coaches’ rankings.  * * * * * *  * * * * *  Soon after his college career ended, Nelson Maeda walked around the Aloha Stadium field. It was an act of spontaneity that was echoed the following year, then popularized, and then becoming what is now known as the Senior Walk.  But times have changed, and despite good […]
