Early start

By Stephen Tsai on January 5, 2011

Offensive lineman Ben Dew was so anxious to get started he arrived in town, from New Zealand, yesterday afternoon — a day earlier than expected.  Dew and offensive lineman Blake Muir, of Australia, will register for spring-semester classes today. They will sign letters of intent next month, and go on scholarship this summer. In the meantime, they will be allowed to participate in team-coordinated conditioning drills and spring practice.  Wideout Cecil Doe will arrive in town Friday. Doe is enrolled […]

By Stephen Tsai on January 4, 2011

The volleyball Warriors opened practice today, with outside hitter Joshua Walker and setter Nejc Zemljak being named captains. Both are seniors.  The 2011 Warriors will be introduced during the Volleyfest following Saturday’s UH basketball game in the Stan Sheriff Center. They open the season against Ball State Dec. 18 in the three-day Outrigger Invitational.  * * * * *  Offensive linemen Ben Dew and Blake Muir are set to arrive tomorrow. Dew and Muir will be paying their own way […]

Back to work

By Stephen Tsai on January 3, 2011

Although classes don’t start for another week, furlough-based UH reopens today. It’s also back to work for the UH football coaches, who were given a week’s vacation between Christmas and the new year. And, no, recruiting was not hurt during that time. It was a dead period. * * * * * *  Former Warriors Alex Green and Greg Salas begin workouts today at the Athletes’ Performance facility in Carson, Calif. * * * * * *  Word on the […]

Bradley is in an Empire State of mind

By Stephen Tsai on January 2, 2011

Former UH wideout Rodney Bradley today signed a contract with agent Mark Magazu, president of Atlas Strategies in New York. Atlas’ headquarter is in the Empire State Building.  Atlas emphasizes representing athletes who will use their public status to promote charitable causes. For instance, an Atlas client, receiver Terrence Austin of the Washington Redskins, is co-chair of the National Youth Leadership Committee of the Ronald Reagan Centennial Celebration. That group includes singers Nick Jonas and Jordin Sparks.  Magazu said Bradley […]

Happy New Year!

By Stephen Tsai on January 1, 2011

Let’s make it a great year.  First item: Get a new spam filter.  * * * * *  Earning invitations to the NFL Scouting Combine is a big deal for Greg Salas, Alex Green and Kealoha Pilares. The NFL is about “measurables” — speed and strength numbers; Wonderlic scores — and Indianapolis is where those are gathered on a so-called even playing field. John Estes, who was not invited to the combine, probably was hindered last year because some draft […]

Going in circles

By Stephen Tsai on December 30, 2010

The selection committee has been meeting to determine the next class of the UH Circle of Honor. As usual, there are nominees you’ve never seen play — heck, some committee members have never seen them play — and some you’ll have to Google when they’re inducted.  A degree apparently is not a requirement. Neither is a spectacular playing career at UH. Actually, a playing career isn’t a requirement, either.  Think it’s time these former UH student-athletes earn a berth:  • […]

Green to all-star game, Letuli gets agent

By Stephen Tsai on December 29, 2010

Former UH running back Alex Green has been told he will be invited to play in the Texas vs. The Nation all-star game in February.  Green will sign with an agent today, and train at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.  * * * * * *  Former UH offensive tackle Laupepa Letuli has reached an agreement with agent Leo Goeas, a former Warrior lineman who played eight seasons in the NFL with the San Diego Chargers, Los Angeles/St. […]

Salas gets agent; No surgery for Pilares; no boos party?

By Stephen Tsai on December 28, 2010

Greg Salas told the Warrior Beat he has signed with agent Kenny Zuckerman, who also represents Davone Bess, David Veikune, Ryan Mouton, Wayne Hunter, Isaako Sopoago,  and Brashton Satele.  * * * * *  Slotback Kealoha Pilares said he has been diagnosed with a partially torn posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) in his left knee, an injury that will not require surgery. He suffered the injury while trying to return a punt in the first quarter of the Hawaii Bowl.  Pilares […]
