AC, Yuval enter the Circle

By Stephen Tsai on February 22, 2011

After a longer-than-necessary wait, two players who made what was the Special Events Arena the place to be in the 1990s — Anthony Carter and Yuval Katz — were finally admitted to UH’s Circle of Honor.  Both were the stars at a time when UH did not need to issue attendance counts. Well deserved. Now, can the committee admit a football player, such as Niko Noga, Al Noga, Michael Carter, Garrett Gabriel, Ashley Lelie, Rich Miano, Chad Owens or Timmy […]

Salas eyes the 40

By Stephen Tsai on February 21, 2011

Sunday will be an important time for former UH receiver Greg Salas’ pro future. More specifically, it will be an important 40 time.  Salas leaves California Wednesday for Indianapolis, where he will participate in the NFL Scouting Combine. He will go through interviews, physical examinations and receiving drills leading to Sunday’s 40-yard dash. With his size (205 pounds and a little taller than 6 feet 1), sure hands and football IQ, Salas can boost his stock with a sub-4.6-second performance […]

Let's make a deal

By Stephen Tsai on February 19, 2011

In a span of a little more than two weeks, the Warriors addressed their concerns in the defensive secondary, restocked the receiver corps, and hired a former head coach who should improve special teams and provide stability on the sidelines and meeting rooms.  Now UH must find a resolution to the very hush-hush contract negotiations with head coach Greg McMackin, who is seeking an extension on a five-year contract that expires after the 2012 season, as well as raises for […]

Special changes

By Stephen Tsai on February 18, 2011

just before meeting with the Warrior football team yesterday morning, it was decided Dick Tomey needed to make a change. Out went his Nike shoes, replaced by school-sponsored UnderArmour shoes.  Tomey’s hiring as special teams coordinator also will lead to other changes, such as:  • While the Warriors will keep the “shield protection” for punts, there will be no directional kicks.  • Punter Alex Dunnachie will be used for kickoffs.  • The Warriors will be more aggressive in going f […]

Tomey will provide a boost

By Stephen Tsai on February 17, 2011

* * * * * Through the years there have been interesting sorts attending UH football practices — Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Walter Payton, Da Braddahs,Chris Mortensen,  Fresno State head coach Pat Hill … But whenever Dick Tomey showed up, people were on their best behavior, sort of like when a parent shows up at school. Everybody speaks of Tomey’s motivational ability, but his greater power is the aura of respect he commands. June Jones based practice and travel schedules on […]

Tomey to coach UH special teams

By Stephen Tsai on February 16, 2011

Dick Tomey, who was UH’s head football coach for 10 seasons through 1986, is returning to the Warriors as special teams coordinator.  Tomey, 72, will be introduced as Chris Tormey’s successor at a news conference Thursday. Tormey, who coached UH’s special teams and safeties the past two years, resigned three weeks ago to coach at Washington State.  At the end of the 2009 season, Tomey “retired” as San Jose State’s head coach. He spent the last year as  an outside […]

Safety signs with UH

By Stephen Tsai on February 15, 2011

Brandon “Taz”  Leslie, a safety who was at Georgia Tech for two years, has signed a letter of intent with the Warriors. Leslie said he faxed a copy of the commitment to UH yesterday. The NCAA recognizes a faxed copy as a binding agreement.  Leslie said he is 6 feet 1 and 208 pounds, and is capable of running 40 yards in 4.5 seconds.  He signed with Georgia Tech in February 2008, turning down offers from Stanford, Washington and Nebraska.
