Friday's practice

By Stephen Tsai on March 18, 2011

The Warriors today  had a modified situational scrimmage during the final spring practice before spring break. The Warriors set up plays for third-and-7 and second-and-12 situations, and so forth.  • The offensive line had its ups and downs. At one point, head coach Greg McMackin decided to coach the line, emphasizing an aggressive “punch” — the thrust block — during passing drills.  • Billy Ray Stutzmann and Corey Paclebar were the No. 1 slots again, with slotback Allen Sampson practicing […]

Overtime

By Stephen Tsai on March 17, 2011

To make up for the missed practice caused by the tsunami threat, the Warriors will extend spring training.  Spring training was set to end with the April 15 Warrior Bowl on the Manoa campus. The makeup practice is set for Monday, April 18, and will be spent mostly on special teams.  Also, the talk-story clinic for coaches has been rescheduled for Friday, April 8, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The entry fee is $20, which will cover refreshments. For […]

Wednesday's practice

By Stephen Tsai on March 16, 2011

The Warriors were again in shoulder pads today for the fourth practice of spring training. Some notes: • Corey Paclebar and Billy Ray Stutzmann were the No. 1 slots. Paclebar was ahead of Allen Sampson, who was the No. 1 left slotback for the first three practices. Stutzmann, who had been the backup at right wideout, was the No. 1 right slotback in place of Terence Bell.  • Coach Greg McMackin called for the “Warrior Drill,” in which he matches […]

Too much is a good thing

By Stephen Tsai on March 15, 2011

I think it’s better for a state lottery to have 200 people each win $1 million than have one $200-million winner. I think popular movies and songs should win more Oscars and Grammys. And I’d rather see more die-hard fans than tsk-tsk snooty critics.  Which brings  us to the much-scoffed topic of postseason college basketball. Seems there are a lot of folks agitated that so many teams can qualify for so many tournaments. To which I say: So what. I […]

Fitness test

By Stephen Tsai on March 13, 2011

More than a dozen former Warriors have signed up for the March 31 Pro Day in Carson, Calif. And the odds are all will be in their best shape in years. For that, they will thank the customized training programs that were paid for by themselves or their agents.  And that is a source of puzzlement for those who follow UH’s own offseason conditioning program. Everything a scholarship player needs — training facilities, conditioning coaches, Muscle Milk, nutritionists, trainers — […]

Saturday's practice

By Stephen Tsai on March 12, 2011

Because yesterday’s practice was canceled, today’s practice became the second of spring training, and the players were not in pads. The Warriors will be in pads Monday (7 a.m. to 9 a.m.). • Safety Kenny Estes was working on kickoffs.  • Because there are no scout teams, quarterback Bryant Moniz was at cornerback during a passing drill.  • Left wideout Darius Bright has played well, and appears to be No. 1 at that position.  • Walk-on linebacker Adam Hom today […]

UH games to be played today; football practice/social canceled

By Stephen Tsai on March 11, 2011

All of today’s UH sporting events — volleyball, baseball and softball — will be played, UH officials announced today. The box office opens at 11 a.m.  But the Warrior football team has canceled this afternoon’s spring practice (scheduled for 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.) and will postpone tonight’s talk-story social with local coaches, associate head coach Rich Miano annnounced. No makeup date has been set for the social. (Any suggestions on what to do with all of the refreshments that were […]
