Greg McMackin reportedly received his $600,000 severance check the past week, thus putting an official end to his working association with UH. His tenure will be remembered for developing Alex Green, Greg Salas, Corey Paredes, Mana Silva, Vaughn Meatoga, etc.; giving coaching jobs to Nick Rolovich, Dave Aranda, Brian Smith and Tony Tuioti;  starting the summer camps; implementing the summer bridge program; improving the APR scores; and introducing phrases such as “This ain’t P.E. football.” Best wishes to McMackin and […]

The old college try

By Stephen Tsai on January 5, 2012

In past years, wiseacre opposing recruiters would tell this joke: Knock knock. Who’s there? UH. UH who? Yesterday, head coach Norm Chow recruited in California while his assistants visited Kahuku High, Punahou School and Kamehameha Schools. Assistant coach Lewis Powell will visit Saint Louis School this morning, then travel to California to recruit tonight. Assistant coach Phil Rauscher is recruiting on the Big Island today. Maybe the Warriors will be successful, maybe not. But they’re giving it the old college […]

Leo Koloamatangi, a lineman from Sacred Hearts Prep High School in Northern California, told the Warrior Beat he has accepted a scholarship offer from the Warriors. Koloamatangi, who is 6 feet 5 and 255 pounds, said he chose the Warriors because of UH assistant coach Lewis Powell, a long-time family friend, and UH head coach Norm Chow. He played on the offensive and defensive lines for the Gators, but has not been told which position he will play at UH. […]

By Stephen Tsai on January 3, 2012

Athletes’ Performance is planning to set up a combine-like event in which former Warriors Aaron Brown, Kaniela Tuipulotu and Vaughn Meatoga will work out in front of NFL scouts. In previous years, UH held a pro day at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. With the switch in UH coaching staffs, the agents for those three players are using their ties with Athletes’ Performance (which trains its players at the Home Depot Center) to hold the workout in early […]

Governor’s greeting

By Stephen Tsai on January 2, 2012

Powell, Abercrombie, Rauscher Soon after arriving in town, newly hired assistant coaches Lewis Powell and Phil Rauscher received an unexpected greeting. Gov. Neil Abercrombie and AD Jim Donovan welcomed both coaches with lei. After reading of the hirings, Abercrombie called Donovan, asking if it would be a good  idea to greet the coaches. Abercrombie then made the arrangements. Rauscher arrived first, after which they waited in the governor’s lounge until Powell’s arrival. That, of course, answers two important questions: 1) […]
