Rolo to Reno; Marrell Jackson signs

By Stephen Tsai on February 8, 2012

Former UH quarterback and offensive coordinator Nick Rolovich yesterday signed a contract to be Nevada’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Rolovich, who was not retained at UH after Norm Chow was hired as head coach, has worked the past month at UMass. But Rolovich, who is still under UH contract through March 31, never did sign a contract with UMass and was there on a “volunteer” basis. Rolovich has a two-year contract with Nevada (UH limits assistants’ contracts to one […]

Giant connection

By Stephen Tsai on February 6, 2012

Congrats to former UH quarterback Kevin Gilbride Jr. for his role in the Giants’ Super Bowl victory. Gilbride Jr. is the offensive quality control coach for the Giants. He breaks down videos of upcoming opponents, looking for tendencies, and gets a writing credit for the game plan. His father — Kevin Gilbride Sr. — is the Giants’ offensive coordinator and brother-in-law of former UH line coach Mike Cavanaugh. In 2008, Gilbride Sr. applied for the UH head coaching job that […]

The Warriors’ 2012 recruiting class already has an NCAA-decorated player. Returner/receiver Scott Harding, who was named to some 2011 all-freshman teams, counts toward the 2012 class. Harding was supposed to join the Warriors as a grayshirt in 2012. Instead, he decided to pay his own way for the 2011 fall semester. He is on scholarship this semester. Colt Brennan, Dan Kelly and Luke Ingram followed the same path. * * * * * Linebacker Penitito Faalologo will not play for […]

Closing a loophole

By Stephen Tsai on February 3, 2012

For several years, the NCAA has allowed a partial qualifier to gain eligibility by first attending a four-year college that does not offer football. After a year of earning credits, the prospect could transfer. Blaze Soares, Mana Lolotai and Brad Kalilimoku were among several who followed that path to Manoa. But the Mountain West Conference, of which the Warriors will join on July 1, has a rule requiring a partial-qualifier to sit out two years if he goes to a […]

Back to work

Three prospects — two from Florida, one from Arizona — arrive in Hawaii tonight for the start of their 48-hour recruiting visit. The trips are nicely scheduled. Nobody will miss watching the Super Bowl. * * * * * Norm Chow said he adheres to the 4-minute rule. He noted that audiences begin to lose interest the longer a speech goes. Expect more news conferences to be like yesterday’s concise session. * * * * * Agent Ken Zuckerman said […]
