Plastic cycle

By Stephen Tsai on March 22, 2012

The Warriors will take it up another notch with, in coachspeak, the addition of plastic at today’s afternoon practice. With the aggressiveness of the first two spring practices, it appeared the Warriors already were in pads. Today it becomes official. Some observations: • “I’m mad, and we’re going to talk about this,” Norm Chow fumed after a player’s indecision cost the Warriors 50 seconds of practice time. Chow believes that every minute counts, and the discipline administered in the spring […]

Sudden change

By Stephen Tsai on March 21, 2012

In a quick turnaround, the Warriors will be back practicing this morning, 13 hours after the conclusion of yesterday’s extended first practice. This time, they will be at the Ching complex. From the first day: • The quarterbacks each wore a knee brace on their plant leg. While it was a bulky adjustment, head coach Norm Chow reminded them that Tom Brady and Carson Palmer now wear braces after suffering season-ending injuries in the past. • Instead of captains, Chow […]

Spring ball

By Stephen Tsai on March 20, 2012

Three months after Norm Chow was hired as head coach, a first sampling of his work will be on display when the Warriors begin practicing this afternoon. It also will be interesting to see the impact of the early-morning workouts for the players. * * * * * What timing. Today also is the first day of spring. * * * * * Happy birthday to PowderPuff. In her honor, may we all have a moment of … screaming!

Spain, Olds are no longer on team

By Stephen Tsai on March 19, 2012

Norm Chow confirmed that quarterback Kevin Spain and offensive lineman Thomas Olds are no longer on the roster. Both will be allowed to attend classes and remain on scholarship this semester. They are not expected back for the 2012 season. Spain received a medical redshirt for the 2010 season after undergoing shoulder surgery. Although he progressed medically, he was not at 100 percent last season. In the summer of 2009, the Warriors were recruiting four quarterbacks. Each was made an […]

Ramblings

By Stephen Tsai on March 18, 2012

Sunday ramblings: • Yesterday’s locker-room project was a lesson in teamwork, and not only among the Warriors. Facility renovations are supposed to be completed by Aug. 1; football training camp opens Aug. 2. But sometimes not all deadlines are easily attainable, especially when they involve appropriated funds and approvals and other such things. Yesterday’s attitude was: If we need to get the ball rolling, give us the ball. It’s not unique. For years, athletic-department staffers have worked events to help, […]

Smooth operators

By Stephen Tsai on March 17, 2012

The Warriors were busy today sanding the walls and the lockers in the football locker room. It is part of a renovation project. The players and coaches smoothed down the walls and lockers, and then during spring break, a professional crew will be brought in to paint. The defense had the morning shift; the offense worked in the afternoon. * * * * * No. 1 quarterback David Graves: * * * * * No. 2 quarterback Cayman Shutter: * […]

Moving along

By Stephen Tsai on March 16, 2012

The Warriors fought the good fight before losing San Mateo’s Fehoko Fanaika to LSU. That leaves the Warriors with a few options. They are expected to continue to hold a scholarship for Konawaena’s Mike Andrade, who still needs to complete some procedures before he may be tendered a binding letter. The Warriors most likely will give the remaining scholarships to current walk-ons rather than signing another prospect this semester. * * * * * While we were all sleeping this […]

Warriors hire WAC assistant

By Stephen Tsai on March 15, 2012

Brad Jones, the WAC’s director of championships, has been hired as the Warriors’ director of football administration, Norm Chow confirmed today. * * * * * * There will be a number of changes — for jerseys, that is — but so far the Warriors have not reissued the numbers worn by quarterbacks Tim Chang (No. 14) and Colt Brennan (No. 15). Running back Joey Iosefa goes from No. 30 to No. 7, and defensive tackle Geordon Hanohano will wear […]
