UH lands Kahuku’s Falemalu

By Stephen Tsai on April 7, 2012

Rashaan Falemalu, a linebacker/tight end at Kahuku High, has made a verbal commitment to play for the Warriors in 2013. Falemalu is 6-2 and 210 — and growing, according to Kahuku coach Reggie Torres. Yes, that name should be familiar. He’s the younger brother of UH defensive end Paipai Falemalu. * * * * * It was a successful spring practice today — on and off the field, and sometimes both. High school coaches, prospects and recognizable alumni (Chad Owens, […]

Developmental stage

By Stephen Tsai on April 6, 2012

Head coach Norm Chow said that after five spring practices the defense continues to make “strides” while the offense is still adjusting to the switch to the pro-set schemes. Following yesterday’s practice, Chow said: “The attitude was good. The hustle was good. I thought offensively it was a little sloppy. … It’s all new. It doesn’t click in right now. It’s going to take time.” Chow said there is concern about the depth of an offensive line that lost six […]

Comeback plans

By Stephen Tsai on April 5, 2012

Tui‘atua Tuiasosopo has been attending UH spring practices wearing a “recruit” name tag. If all goes according to plan, Tuiasosopo will be identified as a Warrior. Tuiasosopo, a former All-State offensive lineman, is re-enrolling at UH this summer. He had signed with UH in February 2008, redshirted that year and had a limited role in 2009, after which it was announced he had medically retired. Tuiasosopo then went on a church mission. A few months ago, he sought a comeback. […]

Quarterback option

By Stephen Tsai on April 4, 2012

One of the NCAA’s basic rules is a player transferring between Division I schools must sit out a season. Or is it? Quarterback Taylor Graham was working on a transfer from Ohio State when he learned of a case where a player was granted an exemption to play without missing a season. Graham petitioned for an exemption, but the request was denied. UH head coach Norm Chow said Graham’s appeal also was recently denied. “We gave it a shot,” Graham […]

Shutter receives indefinite suspension

By Stephen Tsai on April 3, 2012

Head coach Norm Chow said quarterback Cayman Shutter has been suspended indefinitely and immediately from team activities in the aftermath of his recent arrest on suspicion of drunken driving. Shutter will remain on scholarship and be allowed to attend classes. But he will not be permitted to practice, train with the team or attend team meetings while under suspension. Chow said the suspension could last anywhere from a day through the 2012 season. The suspension is based on violation of […]

Shutter faces “significant suspension”

By Stephen Tsai on April 2, 2012

Head coach Norm Chow said quarterback Cayman Shutter will receive a “significant suspension” for his recent arrest on suspicion of drunken driving. Chow said he and Shutter had a brief telephone conversation yesterday, and they are scheduled to meet today. Specifics of the suspension will be announced at a news conference tomorrow. There is a possibility the suspension could extend well beyond spring training, which resumes with a practice tomorrow afternoon and continues through April 27. The Warriors were on […]

Back to norm

By Stephen Tsai on April 1, 2012

Norm Chow is back in Hawaii after making his first visit to China. Chow’s grandfather had left China, at the age of 16. * * * * * The financial books are closed on Greg McMackin’s coaching staff, whose contracts ran through yesterday. Because of payroll lags and such, they will continue to draw checks for at least another month.

Saturday ramblings

By Stephen Tsai on March 31, 2012

Pass the remote. This is what I want to see: • A greeter: The Warriors have a setup where fans attending spring practice enter through a designated gate. It would be good p.r. — and a way to interact with fans (and potential donors) — if an administrator could thank each fan entering. What’s more, the greeter could pass out rosters. (Marketing tip: Put Na Koa’s number on the roster.) • Autograph session: After each practice, the Warriors should stage […]
