By Stephen Tsai on May 17, 2012

Former UH defensive back Richard Torres is not expected to make his Arena Football League debut with the Georgia Force until next week’s game against the Kansas City Command. Yesterday, Torres signed a one-year contract with the Force, who are 5-4 and tied for first place in the American Conference’s South Division. “I’ll be a defensive back,” said Torres, who played nickelback, safety and cornerback at UH. “As far as playing anything else, I’m not sure. But they need DBs.” […]

Defensive tackle David Moala told The Warrior Beat he has accepted a UH scholarship offer and will join the Warriors in the summer of 2013. Moala, who is 6 feet 1 and 318 pounds, redshirted as a freshman at Arizona State in 2011. This past January, he was dismissed for what was termed a violation of “team standards.” He will play for Mt. Two Baldwin Bears will be joining the Warriors. Quarterback Keelan Ewaliko, the two-time MIL Offensive Player of the Year, has accepted a scholarship offer from the Warriors. Ewaliko will be part of the 2013 recruiting class. Ewaliko, who is 5-11 and 175 pounds, led the MIL in rushing and passing yards in 2011. Last week, he won the 200-meter dash in 22.49 seconds at the state track meet. He also was a member of the Bears’ state-champion 400-meter relay team. […]

The tentative roster includes wide receiver Pi‘i Minns, who also is a member of […]

Aloha ball

It appears that, by mutual decision, middle blocker Shane Welch and the volleyball Warriors have agreed to part ways. Welch missed the first half of the 2012 season with a knee injury. He then was part of the rotation at middle. But he did not play in the final four matches because of a sprained ankle. * * * * * It was fitting that the Nagatani Academic Center was the pre-ceremony gathering site for UH’s graduating student-athletes yesterday. It […]

Going for the goal

By Stephen Tsai on May 11, 2012

During exit interviews, each player was asked to submit a list of long- and short-term goals. Nearly everyone listed winning the MWC title as a top goal. “I like that,” head coach Norm Chow said. “We have unselfish players.” Tavita Woodard, who was at tight end for 10 of the 15 spring practices, has been told he will compete at defensive end in training camp. Chow said Woodard did well at tight end but he will have a bigger impact […]

Austin power

By Stephen Tsai on May 10, 2012

Former UH quarterback Shane Austin is making a strong early impression as the starting quarterback for the Everett (Wash.) Raptors of the Indoor Football League. In his first game, he threw seven touchdown passes. Last week, he had a league-high nine TD throws. It’s an 8-on-8 format. The Raptors’ offense has three lineman, two “high-motion” receivers, a running back and Mr. Touchdown. Austin hopes to parlay the gig into a job with in the Canadian Football League. But for now, […]
