Monday notes

By Stephen Tsai on June 18, 2012

Today is the first day of the Warriors’ Team Camp. * * * * * Defensive back Brandon Leslie is listed as a medical retirement. Leslie, a senior, will remain on scholarship. Leslie began his college career at Georgia Tech before eventually making it to Manoa last year. He played in three games in 2012. Fun fact: His cousin is Ickey Woods. Video: Ickey Shuffle. * * * * * Steven Christian, a defensive back who earned his bachelor’s degree […]

Father’s Day

By Stephen Tsai on June 17, 2012

Happy Father’s Day — to all fathers, uncles, older brothers and the single mothers who serve both parental roles. * * * * * As always, “Ferd” did an excellent job in recapping UH’s tenure in the WAC. We all have memories of the WAC. Here are mine: • With a few minutes before tipoff, the music blared, old people in red shirts started clapping in rhythm and Chris Herren led his Fresno State basketball teammates in a jog-skip around […]

Tachibana arrested on DUI accusation

By Stephen Tsai on June 16, 2012

Backup linebacker Alema Tachibana was arrested this morning on suspicion of drunken driving. He was released after posting $500 bail. He is scheduled to appear in District Court on July 16. * * * * * The Warriors have posted a tentative roster. It’s tentative because it does not include the 2012 recruits and preferred walk-ons. There also is a so-called bullpen, which is a list of players who might be added to the roster. The goal was to eliminate […]

Miano to coach at Kaiser

By Stephen Tsai on June 15, 2012

Former UH interim head coach Rich Miano is expected to be named Kaiser High’s head coach this afternoon. An announcement is expected following a noon meeting with the players. Miano is graduate of Kaiser and UH. He played 11 seasons in the NFL and was a Warrior assistant coach for 13 years, the last four as associate head coach. Former UH coach Dennis McKnight is considered to be a candidate for Kaiser’s offensive coordinator’s position. * * * * * […]

Joint mission

By Stephen Tsai on June 14, 2012

The Warriors will be represented in an annual goodwill trip to American Samoa. The past few years, former UH head coach June Jones’ foundation has sponsored a mission in which former players and coaches delivered medical supplies and taught at football clinics. UH did not send a coach last year. This year, Jones and UH head coach Norm Chow arranged for UH assistants Tony Tuioti and Daronte’ Jones to be part of the trip. While the coaches are not recruiting […]

Happy campers

By Stephen Tsai on June 13, 2012

In deciding to set up camps, head coach Norm Chow set a goal: Make it affordable. The $20-a-day fee covered the cost of a T-shirt, lunch, refreshments, insurance and facility rental. The payoff came this past week when Lt. Col. Jason Drake — a father of five and a die-hard Warrior football fan — heard murmurs the Warrior coaches would be conducting a free clinic at Pearl Harbor on Friday. The thing is, he was moving that day to North Carolina […]

Hunger games

By Stephen Tsai on June 12, 2012

Time to discuss our second-favorite topic: Food. Better yet, these coaches offer their favorite eateries. * * * * * Here’s defensive coordinator Thom Kaumeyer: Kaumeyer food video. * * * * * Here’s tight ends coach/recruiting coordinator Phil Rauscher: Rauscher food video. * * * * * Here’s linebacker coach Tony Tuioti: Tuioti food video And he adds one more: Tuioti food 2 video

Brennan released

By Stephen Tsai on June 11, 2012

The Saskatchewan Roughriders released former UH quarterback Colt Brennan, according to his agent Bruce Tollner. Brennan was not immediately available for comment. * * * * * * It was another good turnout for yesterday’s Skills Camp at UH’s grass practice field. It appeared there were about 130 quarterbacks, running backs, receivers, tight ends and defensive backs. Yes, tight ends had their choice of  participating in this camp or the Big Man’s Camp (or both). Camp director Chris “Demo” Demarest […]
