Tuesday ramblings

By Stephen Tsai on June 26, 2012

Anybody else think that next year’s UH football camp should be held on Lanai? * * * * * Maybe it was the dignity of a head coach like Nick Saban sending smiley face or <3 messages, but it is too bad that the NCAA permits only basketball coaches, but not football counterparts, to send unlimited texts to prospects. Texts are great because they’re immediate, and yet not-so immediate. They can be sent and read at any time. * * * […]

UH lands prep QB

By Stephen Tsai on June 24, 2012

Aaron Zwahlen took a family trip to Hawaii this past April. Next year, Hawaii will be his home. Zwahlen, a quarterback from Thomas Downey High in Modesto, Calif., has accepted a 2013 football scholarship from the Warriors. He said he will put his commitment in writing on Feb. 6, 2013, the first day prep recruits may sign national letters of intent. “Hawaii felt like home,” said Zwahlen, who also was recruited by BYU, Texas Tech, Washington State, Duke and Northwestern. […]

Full circle

In 1980, Dick Tomey, who was UH head coach at the time, gave Rich Miano an opportunity to play college football as a walk-on. Thirty-two years later, Tomey is providing assistance as Miano prepares for his first head coaching job. Miano, who was hired by Kaiser High two weeks ago, said he has enlisted Tomey as a consultant. Both were on Greg McMackin’s UH coaching staff last year. Here’s a recap of that staff: • McMackin: Splits time between Las […]

Homecoming for Lolotai

By Stephen Tsai on June 23, 2012

Norm Chow said offensive lineman Waylon Lolotai is transferring to Northern Colorado. It will be a good situation for Lolotai, who earned his bachelor’s degree this past spring. Lolotai, who was raised in Colorado, will be attending a school near his family. His wife, an attorney, is expecting the couple’s first child this fall. Chow said he met with Lolotai yesterday. Chow and some of Lolotai’s relatives are long-time friends. Lolotai, who went on a church mission before enrolling at […]

Updates

Whatever happened to . . . • The Alema Tachibana case? It’s been nearly a week since Tachibana was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving. When quarterback Cayman Shutter was arrested on a similar accusation on March 28, it took four days before he was suspended indefinitely for violating team rules. After pleading no contest two weeks ago, Shutter was suspended for the first four games of 2012. The difference is Shutter’s arrest occurred a week after spring training started. […]

Dull points

By Stephen Tsai on June 21, 2012

The blog host was a marginal student who worked three jobs in college and took five years to earn a degree. The points are: 1) If the blog host, who apparently writes in the third person, can earn a degree, anybody can earn one, and 2) The NCAA’s academic progress rate (APR)  system is misnamed. The intent was to track eligibility and retention. In short, it was set up to make sure athletes go to class and don’t bolt or […]

Camp fire

By Stephen Tsai on June 20, 2012

Remember that old commercial with the slogan — Is it live or is it Memorex? (Here’s the link: Memorex.) The burning question the past two weeks at the UH camps: Is fiery camp director Chris “Demo” Demarest using a megaphone or not? Either way, Demo has captivated campers with a booming voice of encouragement and inspiration. He’s done a great job. Today is the last day for the UH team camp. One of the highlights was the participation of 11 […]

Short cuts to safety

By Stephen Tsai on June 19, 2012

No, it is not a team rule — not yet, anyway — but it is being strongly suggested that UH football players keep their hair shorter. The preference is in response to a new NCAA rule in which a player who loses his helmet during a play will be treated as if he suffered an injury. (The exception is if an opponent pulled off the helmet.) Translation: He must leave the game for at least one play. The rule was […]
