A good bye

By Stephen Tsai on September 7, 2012

At first, it seemed like an ill-timed break. After five weeks of training, a second-week bye was too soon, particularly after an opening loss on the road. But the Warriors have managed to make the most of the extra time, giving second looks to such players as: • Chinedu Amadi, who practiced as a slotback yesterday. Since conquering a shoulder injury that forced him to redshirt last season, Amadi has practiced at running back, wideout and kick returner. • Benny […]

X factor

By Stephen Tsai on September 6, 2012

Billy Ray Stutzmann’s injury is disappointing for the Warriors and himself. He will undergo surgery today to repair a fractured left hand. He is expected to miss about six weeks. Stutzmann is the Warriors’ most versatile receiver. His primary position is the X (on the single side), but he also can play on the strong side and in the slot. He is on special teams, too. Stutzmann spent the offseason training at Tactical Strength, where Kealoha Pilares went from being […]

Stutzmann out six weeks

By Stephen Tsai on September 5, 2012

Single-side receiver Billy Ray Stutzmann suffered a fractured hand and will miss about six weeks, UH head coach Norm Chow confirmed tonight. Stutzmann will undergo surgery tomorrow. “It’s heartbreaking,”  Chow said. * * * * * Cornerback Ne’Quan Phillips showed promise in his college debut. Safety Marrell Jackson is expected to be an impact player. Both are the first phase of the Warriors’ recruiting plans in Florida. Assistant coach Chris Demarest is UH’s point recruiter in Florida. “I recruited there […]

Arceneaux hired as OCSports analyst

By Stephen Tsai on September 4, 2012

Darnell Arceneaux, a former Saint Louis School head coach and star quarterback, will be the color analyst for OCSports’ football telecasts this season. Arceneaux replaces Darren Hernandez in the booth. The NCAA has restrictions on conversations between college and high school coaches. Last year, OCSports did not interview Greg McMackin during the game. This year, Chow has agreed to a request to answer a couple of questions before going into the locker room at halftime. That arrangement restricts Hernandez, who […]

Reset

By Stephen Tsai on September 3, 2012

With a bye this week, the Warriors are entering what is considered to be a second training camp. They will work on fixing some schematic problems and reconfiguring the rotation. The Warriors will have more options for their next two games — both at home, against Lamar and Nevada. They were allowed to travel with 66 players for the USC game, but booked only 64 and ended up taking 63. They will have availability of 108 of their 110 players […]

The day after

By Stephen Tsai on September 2, 2012

Hey, where are my shades? The sun did rise this morning. For the Warriors, there are lessons from yesterday’s loss to USC. For one, that was the most difficult challenge they will face this season. After that perfect storm —  opening on the road, before 93,000 fans, on a Kleenex-dabbing day when former USC linebacker Junior Seau was mourned, against the nation’s top-ranked team — the rest of the schedule will be less bumpy. In the third quarter, the Warriors […]

Manhattan Beach project

By Stephen Tsai on August 31, 2012

The Warriors have set up base in Manhattan Beach in preparation for tomorrow’s season-opener against top-ranked USC. The Warriors had a late-morning wake-up call today. The walk-through is this afternoon at a nearby high school. * * * * * Two scouts, including one from the New England Patriots, are expected to meet with UH coaches today. Long-snapper Luke Ingram’s older brother, former Warrior long-snapper Jake Ingram, was drafted by the Patriots in the sixth round in 2009. Luke Ingram […]
