Increased strength

By Stephen Tsai on February 23, 2013

The Warriors have received permission to hire a strength/conditioning coach. The past three years, Tommy Heffernan, who oversees the strength/conditioning programs for all of the UH teams, has worked with football. UH has two full-time S/C coaches, the fewest among Mountain West schools. Adding another coach would help the Warriors and the overall athletic department. * * * * * Former UH long-snapper Luke Ingram has had a solid few days at the NFL Scouting Combine. He ran the 40-yard […]

Price on board

By Stephen Tsai on February 22, 2013

As expected, former UTEP offensive coordinator Aaron Price has joined the UH football program. UH being UH, there still are administrative procedures that need to be finalized. After that, the coaching assignments will be announced on offense. * * * * * This semester, the Warriors implemented the “first-five rule.” Translation: If you’re a Warrior, you must sit in the first five rows of every class. Each school day, the coaches do random class checks. (Coach Norm Chow was the […]

Aaron Price expected to join Warriors

By Stephen Tsai on February 21, 2013

It appears former UTEP offensive coordinator Aaron Price will be joining the UH football program in a yet-to-be-determined capacity. Price is the son of Mike Price, who recently retired as UTEP’s head coach, ending a 30-plus-years coaching career. Aaron Price was in charge of play-calling and the Miners’ quarterbacks and special teams. * * * * * The Warriors got a head start on 2014 recruiting by securing a commitment from Farrington High DB/LB Manly “Pumba” Williams. His namesake uncle […]

Warriors add walk-on receiver

By Stephen Tsai on February 20, 2013

Justin Lopez, a receiver who wowed observers during walk-on tryouts last week, will be added to the Warriors’ spring roster. Lopez, who is 5-9 and 195 pounds, clocked a 4.5 in the 40-yard dash in windy and slippery conditions. He is a 2009 Waialua High graduate who recently attended Leeward Community College. * * * * * Niko Uti, a defensive end, also had an impressive workout and is expected to be asked to join the Warriors. Uti is a […]

Indy productions

By Stephen Tsai on February 19, 2013

Former UH punter Alex Dunnachie and long-snapper Luke Ingram are scheduled to arrive in Indianapolis today for the NFL Scouting Combine. Each already has been interviewed by 20 NFL teams. Ingram is scheduled to participate in the 225-pound bench press, vertical jump and, possibly, the 40-yard dash. Dunnachie is scheduled to only punt, although he said he would be willing to participate in any of the sprints or jumps. Former UH cornerback/returner Mike Edwards, who has been training in Arizona, […]

Boot shopping

By Stephen Tsai on February 18, 2013

The Warriors still are in pursuit of a punter to succeed Alex Dunnachie, but they remain confident that versatile Scott Harding can handle those duties again. Harding was the punter during Dunnachie’s three-game suspension last year. He befuddled returners with his rugby-styled punts. Harding is ambidextrous. The concern is that if the Warriors are backed near their goal line, they would like to have a punter who can boom it across midfield. Harding also can be used at holder, although […]

Curveball

By Stephen Tsai on February 17, 2013

Sometimes life throws a curveball. A few years ago, life threw us Curveball. Curveball followed his dream of moving to Hawaii, where he fell in love with the people, culture and UH sports. He’s bright, witty and generous. He’s endured tragedy, and he’s currently in a difficult situation, but he remains resilient. It is a given that he is in our thoughts and prayers. Today, let’s all post something nice about Curveball before we get on to the business of […]

Chasing the dream

By Stephen Tsai on February 16, 2013

Yesterday’s walk-on tryouts had several elements — drizzle, drama (it was the start of a three-day weekend so no key-holder to Ching could be found) and eclectic characters. But about 40 football players were able to show their talents, grit and, sometimes, girth in a tryout that should earn a few a spot on the Warriors’ spring roster. Invitations are expected to be formally extended on Tuesday. * * * * * There were what-the-heck expressions when Justin Lopez crossed […]
