Unplugged

By Stephen Tsai on March 11, 2013

At first, it was business as usual on this George Bailey night. The timeouts were exactly the same length — filled with the usual dance-offs and paddle-offs — the fans implored the volleyball Warriors with chants of “Let’s Go ‘Bows!” and outside hitter Siki Zarkovic found innovative ways to celebrate rally-finishing kills. But then … then … The Warriors had a big-time victory over a big-name opponent, and yet the absence of television coverage was noticeable. Even when the arena […]

Early start

By Stephen Tsai on March 10, 2013

The Warriors have made between 12 and 15 offers to 2014 prospects. So far, the majority of offers have been made to mainland prospects. But the Warriors are reserving a sizable amount of offers for local prospects. Many of those offers will be made after camps this summer. * * * * * The volleyball Warriors complete their two-match series against USC this afternoon. First serve will be at 5 p.m. * * * * * Happy birthday to Robert […]

Market value

The volleyball Warriors gave it the ol’ college try. They offered face-painting; gave away ti leaves, T-shirts, pizza and Beats headphones, and created the Warrior March from the dorms to the arena. The response was moderate, the entertainment competition was not. Eat on the Street, Rainbow Wahine softball and Warrior baseball were all scheduled yesterday evening. And then hours later, Brook Sedore served the Warriors into a fifth set, which they dominated to beat USC. UH announced the crowd at […]

The Rainbow Wahine basketball team has honorary captains. The Warrior volleyball team has a clean-cut policy, inspirational message on the back of practice jerseys and will conduct a Warrior Walk this afternoon. The Rainbow Wahine softball team plays music during practices. And tennis or golf players were rolling as a punishment the other day. Hmmm. Where have we seen that before? * * * * * People in the know insist that running back Steven Lakalaka has been impressive in […]

Walk to remember

By Stephen Tsai on March 7, 2013

The volleyball Warriors are planning to take a trip down what they hope will be memorable lane. Before tomorrow’s match against USC, students and fans are invited to join the Warriors, cheerleaders and marching band in the first volleyball Warrior Walk. The gathering begins at 5:30 p.m. at the Hale Aloha Courtyard, where there will be a face-painting station and free Manoa Maniacs shirts. There will be free pizza for the first 100 students attending the match. At the match, […]

Making the cut

By Stephen Tsai on March 6, 2013

Running back Pereese Joas, who participated in the walk-out tryouts three weeks ago, has been added to the UH spring roster. Joas signed his permission form yesterday. Before that, he showed his commitment cutting hair he had grown for more than two years. The Warriors imposed a short-haircut rule last year in response to safety concerns about dislodged helmets. Here’s are Joas’ before-and-after shots: * * * * * Punter Ruben Guzman is officially a Warrior: * * * * […]

Snap decision

By Stephen Tsai on March 5, 2013

A while back, UH coach Bob Wagner gave his final football scholarship to Farrington High coach Skippa Diaz, who then gave it to running back Randall Okiomoto. Okimoto had a decent career at UH, earned a degree, then went went back to his alma mater to teach and coach. Okimoto, who is Farrington’s head coach,  has been paying it forward ever since. Farrington’s Tyler Liana will be joining the Warriors as a walk-on long-snapper. Liana, who is 6 feet 1 […]

Strong finish

By Stephen Tsai on March 4, 2013

Give credit to the Warrior coaches for diligence and persistence in completing the 2013 recruiting class. The Warriors went into extra time to secure commitments from David Fangupo, RJ Hollis, Ruben Guzman and Kwamane Bowens. Each filled a pressing need. The Warriors were the first of more than a million to view Fangupo’s now famed highlight video in which he runs past — and away — from defenders. The point of the video was to show 348-pound Fangupo’s power and […]
