Edwards, Torres shine at pro day

By Stephen Tsai on March 19, 2013

SAN DIEGO — It was a good day for former UH corner Mike Edwards, who ran 4.42 seconds in the 40-yard dash at pro day. Edwards also finished the long shuttle in 11.49 seconds. Defensive back Richard Torres, who completed his UH career in December 2011, put up some impressive numbers in the 40 (4.53 seconds), long shuttle (11.34 seconds), vertical jump (39 inchces) and bench press (17 reps of 225 pounds). Defensive tackle Haku Correa had 30 reps of […]

Why not?

By Stephen Tsai on March 18, 2013

Life is full of injustices. “The Artist” didn’t deserve last year’s Oscar. Jacksonville doesn’t deserve an NFL team. But UH’s invitation to the CIT? Nothing’s wrong with that. It’s not as if the Warriors stole somebody’s berth in the NCAA Tournament or NIT. The CIT is a third-tier tournament, and the 17-14 Warriors are just as worthy of participation as Gardner Webb, Savannah State, Oakland and High Point. (High Point? Really? Talk about a directional school.) Sure, the CIT is […]

UH hosts Air Force in CIT

By Stephen Tsai on March 17, 2013

The Rainbow Warriors received a stay to a season’s end with today’s invitation to the Collegeinsider.com postseason tournament. They host Air Force at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Stan Sheriff Center, according to Riley Wallace, the chair of the 32-team tournament’s selection committee. UH is working on the details of ticket sales, although it has been confirmed season-ticket subscribers will be offered the chance to retain their seats. * * * * * The Warriors plan to hold their 13 […]

Ta’amu joins Warriors

By Stephen Tsai on March 16, 2013

Ed Ta’amu, a former NFL offensive lineman,  has officially joined the Warriors’ coaching staff as an intern. He will assist Chris Naeole, who coaches the offensive line. Ta’aumu is an Iolani School graduate who attended Utah. He was the Minnesota Vikings’ fourth-round draft choice in 2002, but his career was abbreviated because of injuries. He also was with the Houston Texans. Former UH defensive tackle Lance Samuseva is the other intern. Samuseva was hired last year. * * * * […]

85 guys walked into a FUBAR …

By Stephen Tsai on March 15, 2013

The Warriors concluded their offseason conditioning program with FUBAR, an acronym that can’t be translated in a family blog but involves the toughest workouts the past two months. FUBAR included rotating heavy ropes, pushing and pulling weighted sleds, carrying teammates fire-rescuer style, speed-walking while carrying metal milk barrels filled with sand, and using sledgehammers to hit tractor tires. There were eight disciplines in all, run with minimal breaks, over a 60-minute period. UH coach Norm Chow offered this advice: “If […]

Schroeder to miss spring ball

By Stephen Tsai on March 14, 2013

Quarterback Sean Schroeder said he will not participate in spring training because of a back injury. Schroeder is expected to undergo a procedure in May. He is expected to be fully healed in July. The Warriors open training camp in the first week of August. Taylor Graham, who redshirted in 2012 after transferring from Ohio State, is expected to take the first snap of spring training, which begins next week. Ikaika Woolsey, Jeremy Higgins and Justin Alo also will get […]

Pass it on

By Stephen Tsai on March 13, 2013

One of last year’s goals was to avoid duplicate jersey numbers for players on the Warriors’ active roster. Two of last year’s redshirts — quarterback Taylor Graham and defensive back Brian Clay — each wore No. 8 in practices. Both are expected to have significant roles on this year’s team. Knowing about the duplicate-number policy, Graham and Clay each volunteered to give up the number to the other. Linebacker Jerrol Garcia-Williams and safety Marrell Jackson both requested the same number. […]

Quick start

By Stephen Tsai on March 12, 2013

Every spring and summer, the Warriors are tested in speed, agility and strength drills. UH coach Norm Chow said the results are used to gauge conditioning, but are not a means of determining playing time. He emphasized that performances in practices remain the best evaluation tools. The players are divided into Bigs (linemen), Big Skills (linebackers, fullbacks, tight ends, quarterbacks) and Skills (receivers, running backs, defensive backs). Yesterday, the Warriors were tested in the 10- and 20-yard dashes and agility […]
