History of rock

By Stephen Tsai on June 19, 2014

There was a time when a school had  antiquated locker rooms with no soap in the showers. And, so, the community rallied to help the athletic department. People gave in many ways — money, of course, but also materials and volunteer time. And then a guy — who already had  donated money generously, spent thousands of dollars traveling to support the team,  participated in campus cleanups, and  was involved in a drive to pay for championship bracelets for the softball […]

Sons of a beach

By Stephen Tsai on June 18, 2014

It’s Wednesday, which means while you were still wiping the makapiapia, the Warriors were working out at Waikiki Beach. Roll call was at 5:58 a.m., which meant if a player wasn’t two minutes early, he was late. * * * * * Cornerback Ne’Quan Phillips and slotback/returner Quinton Pedroza: * * * * * Safety Keelan Ewaliko and quarterback Ikaika Woolsey:   * * * * * The walking wounded — quarterback Jeremy Higgins (Achilles’ heel) and offensive lineman R.J. […]

Catching on to coaching

By Stephen Tsai on June 17, 2014

Former UH receiver Billy Ray Stutzmann will be joining the Western New Mexico coaching staff. Stutzmann said he will be working with the defensive backs. The school is located in the Silver City, N.M. The Mustangs are members of  NCAA Division II Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Stutzmann completed his UH eligibility after the 2013 season. He earned his bachelor’s degree in December. He did not participate in UH’s pro day in San Diego in March. His brother, Craig Stutzmann, a […]

Still connected

By Stephen Tsai on June 16, 2014

For the first time in five years, the  Warriors did not play a spring scrimmage on a non-Oahu island this year. But yet, it appears, the Warriors have maintained off-island ties. They have increased recruiting efforts, sending coaches to evaluate prospects at every football-playing school. There have been meetings with business leaders on Maui, Kauai and the Big Island. Last week, there was a football camp on Maui; today there will be one at Waiakea High. The quest is ongoing […]

Father’s Day

By Stephen Tsai on June 15, 2014

Happy Father’s Day to all. * * * * * Running back Joey Iosefa and defensive end Beau Yap will represent the Rainbow Warriors at the 2014 Mountain West Conference Football Media Preview in Las Vegas on July 22 and 23. The event, which features 12 head coaches and 24 players, will be held at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. * * * * * Two views: Either former UH linebacker Aaron Brown won his fight last night or he […]

Trading places

By Stephen Tsai on June 14, 2014

Former UH linebacker Aaron Brown makes his pro MMA debut tonight in  a fight in Mesa, Ariz. Brown, who was the St. Louis Rams’ seventh-round pick in 2012, said he has retired from football and is “all in” in MMA. He has been training since January in Gilbert, Ariz., and won his lone amateur fight in under 40 seconds. He will fight Casey Greene at 205 pounds tonight, with the goal of competing at 185 pounds eventually. There are other […]

Camp sights

By Stephen Tsai on June 13, 2014

Quarterback coach/play-caller Jordan Wynn threw well — and often. Receivers coach Luke Matthews ran routes. Defensive coordinator Kevin Clune hit the blocking sled, running backs coach Wayne Moses ran, linebacker coach Kurt Gouveia demonstrated a space-creating move, and so forth. Center Kody Afusia and defensive lineman Kennedy Tulimasealii also led drills. The UH football clinics are show-and-tell sessions. Yesterday’s 5-hour camp was at Roosevelt High. The series continues with Monday’s camp at Waiakea High.  Camp director Chris “Demo” Demarest Kennedy […]

Roadie Warrior

By Stephen Tsai on June 12, 2014

At the end of every football practice, head coach Norm Chow leads the Rainbow Warriors in a three-clap salute to athletic trainer Brian Wong. Wong probably deserves a standing ovation during the summer. At UH, tight budgets do not include room for student trainers during the offseason. For yesterday’s beach workout, Wong loaded containers of water and ice to Waikiki Beach. He had to bring enough to supply water and a sports-drink mix  for more than 80 players working […]
