It’s tough enough to hit Waikiki Beach running — crawling, rolling, serpentining — at 5:55 in the morning. For this morning’s third beach session of offseason training, Pearl Harbor-Hickam leaders took control, putting the Warriors through drills that would put chiropractors on speed dial. UH adds JC back

By Stephen Tsai on June 26, 2014

The paper work  is being processed, and running back Dominique Small is expected to soon join the Warriors. The goal is for Small to gain admission for the July 7 start of Summer Session II. Here’s what the signing means: > Filling voids: The search for a running back began about a month ago when Aofaga Wily started to consider retirement because of medical issues stemming from a concussion suffered last September. In addition to losing Wily, walk-on Max Broman […]

Falcons and the showman

By Stephen Tsai on June 25, 2014

It’s summer break, sort of, for the NFL, but former UH linebacker Brenden Daley is living up to his nickname’s credo: A shark never stops. Daley will continue to work out in California until he reports to the Atlanta Falcons’ training camp on July 22. The Falcons, by the way, will be featured on HBO’s “Hard Knocks.” From a chat with our blog, here are some “Shark” bites: On his plans: “I have a solid month to train and watch […]

Wily expected to retire

By Stephen Tsai on June 24, 2014

Running back Aofaga Wily is expected to retire from football because of medical concerns stemming from a concussion he suffered last year. If his petition is granted — he awaits approval from doctors and administrators — Wily will remain on full scholarship but not count toward the Warriors’ 85-scholarship limit for active players. “His health is way more important than football,” coach Norm Chow said. Wily was the state’s top offensive player in 2012 when he led Kahuku High to […]

Lion-hearted

By Stephen Tsai on June 23, 2014

Pro days measure a player’s height, weight, vertical jump, speed over 40 yards and on zig-zag courses and strength. But heart? If there were such a test, John Hardy-Tuliau would put up numbers that would make Mel Kiper Jr.’s hair stand at attention. His last name has a hyphen, but it really should include a slash. At UH, Hardy-Tuliau played cornerback, free safety, strong safety, nickelback and dimeback. That’s five positions — make that 11, if you count his time […]

Kapolei camp

By Stephen Tsai on June 22, 2014

It was a beautiful day in Kapolei. (Hey, I’m a poet, don’t even know it.) The Warriors concluded their series of high school camps with today’s session at Kapolei High. The youth camp (ages through eighth grade) is tomorrow and Tuesday on the Manoa campus. Here was today’s host — OK, he had the key — Dr. Debonaire (Darren Hernandez). Seriously, though, Hernandez has a great organization over there. The school is clean, the fields immaculate, and he even found […]

On the nose

By Stephen Tsai on June 21, 2014

Penitito Faalologo is on the move again. Faalologo, who was raised in American Samoa, was recruited as a linebacker. He was used there briefly before moving to defensive end. While redshirting as a freshman last fall and during the past spring training, he was at fullback and H-back. This offseason, Faalologo has been training with the intent of playing nose tackle in training camp. Faalologo appears to have the tools to be a point defender — strength, compact build and, […]

Wittek still interested

By Stephen Tsai on June 20, 2014

According to people in the know, former USC quarterback Max Wittek remains interested in transferring to UH. The Warriors apparently have yet to decide on a move. They are pleased with their quarterbacks and the offense’s chemistry. In the revised situation, Wittek would have to redshirt this year, after which 2015 would be his only remaining season to play. The Warriors have five quarterbacks on their summer roster. Taylor Graham and Jeremy Higgins are fifth-year seniors who complete their eligibility […]
