Cindy Luis covers University of Hawaii volleyball for the Star-Advertiser. She began her career as a sports journalist in Hawaii in 1981 with the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and was the sports editor, assistant sports editor, columnist and beat writer during a 31-year span before the paper became the Star-Advertiser. She graduated from UCLA in 1977 with a B.A. in Communication Studies.

Hawaii No. 18 in AVCA poll

The Rainbow Wahine, ending the year 22-7, finished at No. 23 in last season’s rankings. Hawaii is the only Big West Conference team ranked. as mentioned, team is up with the chickens. Been told that Mitchem arrives Saturday, not sure if she’s been cleared to practice. Day 1: Wahine open practice

First workout started at 630 The 2 hours went very quickly. Opened with drills then broke into 3 courts by position. Middles, OHs and DS. Setters Higgins and Koelsch alternated setting the OHs and MBs. Second practice this afternoon Shoji said with so many returnees that they’ll be able to get into practice mode.

Mentioned on previous thread that Mitchem won’t be at practice until later next week, possibly Friday. McGown joins Vulcans staff, Ribeiro to Cal

Former CCH (BYUH), USA, UH (assistant) and BYU caoch Carl McGown is joining Tino Reyes’ staff at UH Hilo. His assistant’s job with the Vulcans starts Saturday. More recently been coach of the Swiss national team. One of the best volleyball minds out there IMHO. A good guy who is also a ski instructor in Utah.
