Leahey gets fitting sendoff

By Brian McInnis on August 12, 2018

The jokes were many, the laughter hearty, the tributes genuine. Legendary Hawaii sportscaster Jim Leahey, “the voice of UH athletics,” received a fitting retirement sendoff at The Willows restaurant on Sunday. Those who gave speeches (in person or remote) included his son, Kanoa, who MC’d, Pal Eldredge, Bobby Curran, Rick Blangiardi, Dick Tomey, Larry Beil and Neil Everett. Some of the former coaches in attendance were Dave Shoji, Vince Goo, Bob Wagner and Les Murakami. Current football coach Nick Rolovich […]

Sunday musings: Aloha, time, Leahey

By Stephen Tsai on August 12, 2018

With about 40 first-year Warriors, it sometimes is about just establishing a routine. And that was the most significant takeaway from Saturday’s scrimmage at Aloha Stadium. The Warriors simulated the game-day routine, from meetings to the pre-event meal, to the bus ride to the stadium, to how to exit the locker room. The little things matter. Of note: > The quarterbacks had their moments. Chevan Cordeiro opened in a rhythm, speed-reading the coverages and making quick (and correct) decisions. He […]

Wahine sweep New Zealand

By Brian McInnis on August 12, 2018

Two games in The Land of the Long White Cloud, two victories for the Hawaii women’s basketball team. The Rainbow Wahine completed a North Island/South Island sweep of New Zealand by defeating NZ Premiere South, 54-49, in a defensive grind of a game in Christchurch on Sunday (Saturday night in Hawaii) that saw both teams shoot below 30 percent. Kenna Woodfolk led the way for the Wahine with nine points and 10 rebounds, helping UH follow up its 14-point win […]

Aloha Saturday

The Warriors are practicing today at Aloha Stadium for the first — and only — time this training camp.

‘Bows begin tour competition

By Brian McInnis on August 10, 2018

It looks like it’s been fun. Now come the games. After an enjoyable day discovering Brisbane and the Gold Coast in the upper Australian state of Queensland, the Rainbow Warriors buckled down for the first of four games on their tour. They play the Brisbane Bullets of the top Australian pro league, the National Basketball League (NBL), at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Because Australia is a day ahead, that means it’s tonight (Friday) back in Hawaii, with a 10:30 p.m. tipoff. […]

Fresh start

By Stephen Tsai on August 10, 2018

Two freshmen — Ilm Manning and Solo Vaipulu — have been impressive this training camp. So much so they have practiced with the No. 1 offensive line this past week. Manning has practiced at left tackle and Vaipulu at right guard. I can’t remember the last time the Warriors started two true freshmen on the offensive line. As of today, Kaiwi Chung is the No. 1 center. But it’s still early, and things can change.

Wahine practice Day 2

By Cindy Luis on August 9, 2018

Don’t have complete details yet but next week’s Green-White Scrimmage will be open to the public. Believe it is next Friday, which is a state holiday. Two practices 6-9 and 3-6. Pretty standard skills and drills, some with entire team, some broken down by position. Two players still haven’t passed test. Not mentioning who due to HIPA. Early observations Angel Gaskin, a physical lefty opposite, will help immediately. Passes well from my limited viewing. Considering Sarah Liva hasn’t played college […]

Batoon begins next career phase

By Brian McInnis on August 9, 2018

Most of Corey Batoon’s college football coaching career can be neatly divided into two phases: his Northern Arizona career (11 years), and his career in the South (nine). You might say he’s begun Phase 3. Batoon, UH’s new defensive coordinator and safeties coach who arrived in the spring, has had the Rainbow Warriors running his new multiple-set schemes for the past two weeks of training camp, plus the work the Warriors put in during the spring and independently over the […]
