Game 3 sprees

By Brian McInnis on August 15, 2018

Game 3 was good to both the Hawaii men’s and women’s basketball teams on Wednesday night (Tuesday back home) in their respective foreign tours. The Rainbow Warriors put together their best effort of their Down Under tour for a 70-52 win over the Centre of Excellence — the former academy of UH freshmen Mate Colina and Owen Hulland — in the Australian capital of Canberra. Colina scored 14 points in his homecoming, while point guard Drew Buggs added 11. Here’s the link […]

Warrior Beat: Warriors pick co-captains

By Stephen Tsai on August 14, 2018

Four players with diverse backgrounds — a married long-snapper who is a father of two, an offensive lineman from Oklahoma, a boar-hunting defensive lineman, and a rugby player from California — are this year’s Warrior football co-captains. “That’s Hawaii for you,” long-snapper Noah Borden said. “That’s Hawaii football. That’s the islands. It’s a good representation of what we have to offer at the University of Hawaii football program. No matter where you’re from, no matter what you’re here to do, […]

A slice of Humboldt pie

By Brian McInnis on August 13, 2018

Back in the 2015-16 season, UH Hilo made a guest appearance in the round-robin format of the modern Rainbow Classic, playing Montana State, which word had it did not want to play Coastal Carolina, a late addition to the field. That was it for the Vulcans; they obliged for that one game vs. the MSU Bobcats and went back to the Big Island, although they returned to play Manoa in a stand-alone game the next month. Three years later, it […]

New rule: knees need coverage, too

By Ferd Lewis on August 13, 2018

A rule that officials working college football games will begin enforcing this season requires players’ pants to “completely cover the knees,” officials said. Rule 1-4-4-d advises that, “if an official discovers illegal equipment or if a player is not wearing mandatory equipment, the player must leave the game for at least one down and is not allowed to return until the equipment is made legal.” This includes knee pads and pants “completely covering the knees.” The rule was to have […]

Gaudion feels the Aloha

By Brian McInnis on August 13, 2018

Stan Gaudion looked around at the vacant 50,000 seats of Aloha Stadium during the Hawaii football team’s lone fall camp practice/walkthrough at its home venue. Last Saturday could have been any Saturday under the bright lights, crowd or no crowd. And the third-year sophomore punter treated it as such, booming several balls long distances during the team’s scrimmage session. “Oh, just so much fun, really. Obviously training’s awesome back in Manoa, but it’s something special about coming out to the […]

‘Bows edged in Melbourne

By Brian McInnis on August 13, 2018

In wrenching fashion, the Hawaii men’s basketball team remained winless on its Down Under tour on Monday night (late Sunday in the islands). UH led the Melbourne Tigers of SEABL (Australia’s second-tier pro league) most of the way, including by nine points in the fourth quarter, only to see the host team hit a barrage of 3s late and put in the go-ahead shot with 18 seconds left for an 86-85 comebacker at the Veneto Athletic Club in Australia’s second-largest […]

Warrior Beat: Traditional touch

By Stephen Tsai on August 13, 2018

In a collaborative effort bridging the past and present, Polynesian Warriors and Rainbow Warriors, a new rite was added to the UH football program. Before every practice, the Warriors will touch a koa plaque in the locker room to draw mana and unity. A group of boosters, chaired by Kekoa Furtado, and coach Nick Rolovich introduced the rite during an emotional ceremony yesterday afternoon. Brook Kapukuniahi Parker, a famed illustrator and Hawaiian historian, created a picture of Polynesian warriors. That […]
