Soccer Wahine picked last again; RSO is preseason All-BWC

By Brian McInnis on August 9, 2018

In what’s seemingly become a rite of passage in the month of August, the Hawaii soccer team must deal with the knowledge that expectations of it around the Big West Conference are low. At the bottom, in fact. UH, the last-place (ninth) finisher in the conference two of the last three seasons, was tabbed to finish ninth yet again in the preseason coaches poll and all-conference team released Thursday. UC Irvine was picked to win. The Rainbow Wahine, 6-10-1 (1-6-1 […]

Thomas wins baseball award

By Stephen Tsai on August 9, 2018

Dylan Thomas’ summer of fun resulted in being named the top relief pitcher in the prestigious Cape Cod Summer League. Thomas, who is returning to UH for his junior season, was 3-0 with a 1.19 earned-run average and nine saves for the Hyannis Harbor Hawks. In 22 2/3 innings, he struck out 33 and walked two. He had a 0.88 WHIP. “Not surprised at all he received the award because of how his numbers were and how he did,” UH […]

Game 1 of Wahine tour tips off

By Brian McInnis on August 8, 2018

The Rainbow Wahine basketball team wasted little time in getting around to its first of four games on its “Hawaiian Airlines & Rainbow Wahine Go The Distance Tour.” After checking out the Sky Tower — in Auckland, the biggest city in New Zealand — the team was off to play at Auckland Grammar School, less than a day after arriving in the country. Here is the free streaming link for UH vs. New Zealand Premier North. Per the site, this Kiwi team […]

After months of advance work, both University of Hawaii basketball teams have left for Down Under — Australia for the Rainbow Warriors, New Zealand and Australia for the Rainbow Wahine. The UH men departed today for Australia (10-hour flight, first stop, Brisbane) while the Rainbow Wahine have already arrived in Auckland (nine-hour flight) and play their first of four games tonight (Wednesday) at 7:30 p.m. HST (it’ll be 5:30 p.m. Thursday local time in Auckland). For the Wahine game, look for […]

Corner is back

By Stephen Tsai on August 8, 2018

Cornerback Austin “PK” Pang Kee has rejoined the Warriors. “I had some personal business to take care of,” said Pang Kee, who did not participate in the offseason conditioning program. (Coach Nick Rolovich) gave me an opportunity to come back, and I was really appreciative of that.” Pang Kee’s father, Tony Pang Kee, played for the Warriors in 1990 and 1991. Pang Kee is a 2015 Damien Memorial School graduate. He was a member of the scout team the past […]

Wahine open practice, unranked for first time in preseason poll

By Cindy Luis on August 8, 2018

Practice scheduled to start at 6 a.m. They started warming up at 5:48. New strength coach is former baseball player Steven Ventimilia. Only Sophia Howling not cleared to practice. Team spent about 20 minutes warming up in the arena then went out to run on the track. Fun music. First song: I’m So Excited. The AVCA poll is out. Think UH’s run being ranked in preaseason poll may be over today.

Wahine picked No. 2 in BWC preseason poll

By Cindy Luis on August 7, 2018

Not much of a surprise … other than UH getting four first-place votes out of the nine. Hawaii was picked second behind defending champion Cal Poly. The Mustangs received 77 points and five first-place votes, while Hawaii secured the remaining four first-place votes and 75 total points. 2018 Big West Women’s Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll 1. Cal Poly (5) 77 2. Hawaii (4) 75 3. UC Irvine 62 4. Long Beach State 48 5. UC Santa Barbara 45 6. UC […]

Football pool

By Stephen Tsai on August 7, 2018

“It’s a tradition,” said coach Nick Rolovich, kicking off the annual pool day for the Warriors. A little bit of history: > Pool day started as a reward during the JJ era. > Pool days are pre-planned, but to make it entertaining, sometimes there would be a “reward” competition. If a kicker converted a field goal, say, then everyone got a pool day. Thing was, there were times when the kicker would miss. And the the competition would have to […]
