Asia trip spots still open

By Brian McInnis on June 21, 2011

Panda Travel originally forecast about 100 seats available for the “Warriors to Asia” tour with the Hawaii men’s basketball team in August, with payment due today. But turnout hasn’t been quite what was hoped to this point, with about 30 booked for the official tour group, a representative of Panda said. The deadline for placing orders for trip has been extended at least a week. The cost for the full tour, which follows the team on every stop starting in […]

UH all in for NCAA summer league

By Brian McInnis on June 12, 2011

Fans of the annual NCAA Summer League at the Manoa District Park are in for a treat this year. The Hawaii men’s basketball team’s participation is heavy with at least one current player on each of the six teams’ rosters. Not everybody on the 2011-12 team is in, but it’s most of them. There are also several former Rainbow Warriors of recent vintage, including Julian Sensley, Bobby Nash and others. The league starts up on Thursday, but keep in mind […]

Trip prices set

By Brian McInnis on June 8, 2011

Panda Travel has announced its prices for the Hawaii men’s basketball “Warriors to Asia” tour in August, which is open for fans to accompany the team through several locales in China and Japan. Prices are a bit higher than initial projections, but the following includes airport tax and fuel surcharges and the $175 China entry visa. These appear to be set, but the latest itinerary indicates that these prices and the itinerary are still subject to change. Current pricing for […]

Trip update

By Brian McInnis on June 1, 2011

The Hawaii men’s basketball team’s upcoming trip to Asia is still a lock, but parts of the travel itinerary (scheduled between Aug. 9 to 21) may change. That’s why Panda Travel has yet to announce its travel packages for fans who wish to accompany the team through China and Japan on most or all of those dates. Panda Travel estimates the cap size on the tour group at 100 or just over that. The ballpark cost estimate is between $3,000 […]

Trip coming together

By Brian McInnis on May 16, 2011

Though the details aren’t all in yet, indications are that the UH men’s basketball team is close to announcing the full travel package for the 10-day summer trip to China and Japan. The plan is still to have boosters or other supporters join the team on the August expedition (those who have the dough and time to go, of course). Significant progress has been made in both sponsorships and overall fundraising, though the cost was higher than the total $75,000 […]

Shaq reax

By Brian McInnis on May 10, 2011

How’s this for dessert? After Shaquille Stokes‘ signing ceremony in New York, the Lincoln High standout went to a dinner where he was named the New York City Player of the Year by the New York Daily News. He beat out seven other NYC players for the honor. A nice way to cap the recruiting class for 2011-12 — if indeed he is the last added. UH is out of open scholarships for next year, but in the event that […]

Shaq narrows it down

By Brian McInnis on May 8, 2011

After Shaquille Stokes‘ visit to Oahu from Thursday night to Saturday night, this is known: the Lincoln (N.Y.) High point guard still has Hawaii in his sights, despite some less-than-ideal weather during his stay. He was originally planning to visit Western Kentucky next week, but said last night that he “most likely” would not and was going to decide between UH and Colorado State sometime in the coming days. “It was some bad weather, but overall it was fun, a […]

Shaq in the house

By Brian McInnis on May 6, 2011

Lincoln (Coney Island, N.Y.) High point guard Shaquille Stokes is on Oahu this weekend for one of a few official visits he will take before deciding where to play college basketball, said his coach, Dwayne Morton. The 5-foot-10 Stokes was the MVP of his highly competitive league after averaging about 19 points, 6.5 assists and four rebounds. Lincoln went 28-3, won the Brooklyn regular-season title and lost in the championship game of the New York public school tournament. “He’s one […]
