Yup Big West Men’s Volleyball season canceled

  2. Ki March 12, 2020 8:55 am

That sucks. The one chance Hawaii has to win a national championship and they won’t be able to prove it.

  3. Andrew March 12, 2020 9:01 am

I’m sure it might’ve crept into sports in one way or another but it’s kinda crazy to think this avalanche of sports cancellations all started with Rudy Gobert.

  4. Cindy Luis March 12, 2020 9:13 am

    1. not cancelled. suspended. They still hope things can be rescheduled. But I’m not hopeful
    3. i don’t think it started there.
Ivy League cancelled all sports before the Gobert announcement.

  5. Andrew March 12, 2020 9:20 am

    4. Yeah they said suspended but at the rate things are going I doubt it’s going to resolve within the next couple of months

Actually it kinda seems like it did. The NCAA was taking the no fans in the stands approach but letting play go on and the NBA was possibly headed there eventually but was still operating normally. As soon as Gobert did that touching the microphones nonsense and then tested positive and then teammate tested positive, it was a domino effect. NBA canceled, then other leagues as well.

  6. Cindy Luis March 12, 2020 9:22 am

    5. not going to argue about the domino effect. Harvard cancelled its west coast trip last week. As mentioned Ivy League cancelled before Gobert announcement.

    6.

I just feel horrible for the Men’s Vball team esp the seniors. Despite sweep by BYU this really seemed like their year.

  8. Cindy Luis March 12, 2020 11:33 am

    7. they also beat BYU. but agree, felt this was the year
My question to the NCAA if they would have a waiver to give this year’s seniors another year in 2020.

  9. diamonds808 March 12, 2020 11:33 am

I’m SO sad for our team, especially our seniors, 3 of them being 5th year seniors! NO SENIOR NIGHT CELEBRATION, NO TRIP TO THE CHAMPIONSHIPS….. Just so sad for all our teams! Thank you James, Colton, Patrick and Rado for being with us and making Men’s volleyball exciting and always in contention for the title. We will miss you so much!

  10. H-Man March 12, 2020 11:40 am

It would be nice if the seniors are granted another year, but I think unlikely. I wonder if this will extend into the fall. But I am glad the NCAA took the action to cancel all events.

  11. shar March 12, 2020 12:30 pm

If the NCAA sees the dire need to do this than Hawai’i should close its port to the floating petrie dishes (cruise ships)

  12. Andrew March 12, 2020 1:06 pm

    8.

Do you think that would be a possibility? My first thought would be that it would really throw off roster counts right especially with the new incoming freshmen for next year. Then again this is an unprecedented event so exceptions could be made if they choose to do so. I would think Vball and the other spring sports have more of a shot than NCAA bball since they are still in the regular season. I wonder also though if they decide to not give them another year, if the University would find some way to give the seniors a proper senior ceremony.

  13. Kahuna March 12, 2020 2:03 pm

i think most players had plans for when they graduate. I don’t t think many would want to go thru another year of college just for a shot(no guarantee) of achieving what they want to achieve.

Time to move on with their lives and everyone is just going to have to pick up where the seniors left off next year. What the school can do is if UH was to win the championship in 2021, that maybe they could make a ring for Rado, Pat and Colton for what happened this year. I think that would be a great gesture for all those three have meant and done for UH.

  14. shar March 12, 2020 3:01 pm

    13….and Patrick Gasman

Can I make a suggestion? I don’t know what they plan to do about our tickets but perhaps we can donate a (possible) refund for a senior reception and/or senior night festivities once we can go about life in our own ways…and/or if we can’t…perhaps the Mens Volleyball Program can think of an appropriate momento to give to the seniors.

  15. UHVoice97 March 12, 2020 3:10 pm

    13., 14. Let’s include James — the inspirational leader…

  16. shar March 12, 2020 3:30 pm

15..right…I meant James…I knew there were 4…I thought it was Pat that was missing. Yes, James is the heart and soul of this year’s team.

  17. jm2375 March 12, 2020 3:33 pm

    13 & 14. Don’t forget about James Anastassiades.

The status of team banquets is still pending. Stay tuned.

Looks like there will be an unofficial champion crowned by poll (a la football pre-FBS playoffs). Wouldn’t be surprised if it was BYU.

  18. Andrew March 12, 2020 3:38 pm

    17

Unless it’s the NCAA official championship award, it’s irrelevant. I’m sure BYU will feel the same when they’re awarded it

  19. Warriorfan March 12, 2020 4:13 pm

Ncaa needs to do the right thing and award spring sports athletes another season of eligibility, for those that DO want to return.

  20. rage March 12, 2020 6:31 pm

It would also screw up all the scholarships, incoming freshmen are supposed to take the outgoing seniors scholarships (or the partials). This is not volleyball specific, the basketball teams would probably want their seniors to play again if the volleyball people get another year.

  21. Maverick March 12, 2020 6:32 pm

    17. Another stupid idea, to award a championship based on voter opinion. OTB uses college football as a partial justification, but that sport has evolved and no longer uses voter opinion to award the title. OTB is going backward not forward. Lopes is loopy, or just trying to keep his website relevant.

And I can’t wait for two other brilliant OTB awards, the best non-white player and the best non-US citizen player. Lopes is award-happy (who was the best men’s player of the past 36 hours? I didn’t see the an article about it).

  22. Maverick March 12, 2020 6:49 pm

19, 20. At first, I thought that the NCAA should award ALL winter/spring sports athletes, who have not completed most (75%?) of their sport seasons, another year of eligibility, not just the seniors/outgoing grad students. Everyone has been cheated. I think basketball is an example in which eligibility should not be extended–regular seasons have been completed (sorry about no championship play). Baseball, softball, men’s volleyball, beach volleyball, etc. are examples in which eligibility should be extended because they are in the middle of their regular seasons.

Then post #20 made a good point on scholarship counts. NCAA could make a rule about the scholarship issue with a one-year exception to the maximum number, but if juniors and underclassmen are given another year, then some future incoming class is going to be screwed. Perhaps the NCAA should offer it to the seniors of eligible sports who return, while frosh/sophs/juniors just have to deal with losing the rest of this season. You can have the one-year exception, and next year’s graduating classes will involve this year’s juniors and seniors so that incoming classes in the future are not impacted adversely. Some of this will be mitigated by seniors who won’t want to return (will Sabrina Ionescu want to come back for year 5 to try to get that natty for Oregon?), especially in football, basketball and other sports with established pro leagues. And not everyone wants to be in college for a fifth (or even sixth) year.

  23. shar March 12, 2020 7:00 pm

Thank goodness Charlie scheduled a lot of pre-season games. Mens Volleyball did not even begin their regular season, if I am correct.

  24. Warriorfan March 12, 2020 7:44 pm

If the ncaa grants everyone an extra year. I wouldn’t worry about future classes, with only 4.5 and 6 scholarships available for the whole team , it’s always gonna be the best players regardless of class that get a share of that pie. I think it will eventually all sort itself out. i also don’t see every player on the warrior and wahine beach roster teturning for a 5th some will probably move on, especially if they don’t start.

  25. vballfan March 12, 2020 7:47 pm

    17. Dumb OTB idea. Period.
But, it sounds like the vote is going to happen, so why is it only the coaches and media will be the voters? The players are on the front line in every game, not the coaches and media (no offense to you, Cindy).

  26. jm2375 March 12, 2020 7:48 pm

    23. UH was just starting their conference games, but were about 2/3 of the way through the regular season.

  27. OIB March 13, 2020 4:24 am

As much as our 2020 seniors would like the opportunity in 2021 to play for the national championship, I wonder if the commitment would be there. They have been preparing at a high level since fall 2019 and to repeat that extreme effort another year might be too much.

  28. islandman March 13, 2020 7:56 am

The NCAA may grant an additional year of competition for spring sport student- athletes, if Jeff Goodman’s statement is accurate and that is what he means.

  29. jm2375 March 13, 2020 9:29 am

Suggestion for season ticket holders – donate your refund to the program. Go to the AKA website or write a check AND make sure it’s noted that it is for the MVB program or it’ll go into the general AKA fund.

  30. shar March 13, 2020 9:50 am

    29. agree

  31. Andrew March 13, 2020 10:14 am

Well it’s official, Big West has canceled all remaining conference and non conference sporting events

  32. Cindy Luis March 13, 2020 4:28 pm

    https://www.hawaiiwarriorworld.com/?p=53272
new thread up with team returning. There will be videos with coach and all four seniors.
UH is looking at doing a senior thing for all spring sports but much depends on if campus is open or not.
as for NCAA giving a year back. much has to be decided. How do you make it equitable. who pays for it. It will throw off scholarship counts. Scholarships already awarded to incoming recruits.
All but Papapunov are fifth year seniors, so they have already done double majors to stay eligible. Anastassiades has 150 credits. He’s also been offered the team’s manager job that will be vacant when Matt Johnson graduates in May.
as for OTB, trying to discourage them from doing it.
It’s not like it’s official. it’s another poll.
