One run in two games against No. 8 UC Santa Barbara has been good enough to split the series so far after Tyler Brashears and Quintin Torres-Costa combined on a four-hit shutout in Saturday’s win.

Can the ‘Bows make it 3-0 in Big West home series this season and 3-0 against the Gauchos since joining the conference in 2013?

Matt LoCoco, RF (.146, 2 2b, 7 runs)
LHP Jarrett Arakawa (2-2, 3.26 ERA, 30 1/3 IP, 16 K)

No Marcus Doi in the lineup for UH. Doi hurt his wrist crashing into the fence in foul ground in left field making a catch Saturday night. They decided after BP to remove him from the lineup.

TOP 1: Real good start for Arakawa, who was featured in Friday’s Star-Advertiser. 1-2-3 first inning in 11 pitches.

TOP 2: UCSB finds the right spot with a couple of ground balls as Newell singles just over the glove of Arakawa and Woodward hits a grounder deep in the hole at short for an infield hit. After a bunt, O’Brien hits one off the end of the bat that falls into no-mans land in shallow right for a single to bring in the first run. A bit of jawing between the plate ump and Trapasso after a close 1-2 pitch is called a ball but Arakawa gets the swinging strikeout of Fisher. Wear grounds out to third on a nice backhanded pick by Kitaoka.

BOTTOM 3: LoCoco, filling in for Doi, pulls a ball over the head of the right fielder for a ground-rule double. Ventimilia squares up a 3-1 fastball and hits a bullet but it’s right at Fisher at short for the third out.

TOP 4: Three straight singles to start the fourth for the Gauchos and Arakawa is in a pretty big jam. Fisher is first-pitch swinging and hits a ball over first that must have JUST touched the line. It’s fair and a two-run double. Gauchos lead 3-0 and now 4-0 after a wild pitch scores O’Brien from third. Kitaoka now with a throwing error on an easy throw to first for his fourth consecutive game with an error. Swenson’s one-out single scores Fisher after a strikeout and Arakawa is done. Andrew Jones in and gets the quick double play to end it.

BOTTOM 4: Leadoff single for Baldwin who then tries to stretch into a double but is thrown out by about 15 feet. Just trying too much there. Four strikeouts for Bieber through 4.

TOP 5: One of those days all the breaks going UCSB’s way. Newell tries to bunt for a hit and pops it up over the mound where nobody is for a base hit. Jones picks off Newell at first so it evens out.

Andrew Jones gives up two singles and hits a guy to load the bases with one out but Kyle Von Ruden comes in to get the double play. Jones with another impressive performance. 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.

Bieber back out for the ninth and gives up a leadoff single to Aliviado. Sawelson follows with a single through the left side of the infield. Ramirez with a liner to right but it hangs up and is caught for the first out. Ka’aua grounds out to third and pinch-hitter Jordan Richartz grounds out to end it.
