How fast is Scott Harding?
Harding, who played six years of pro Aussie Rules football, has sped up his schedule and will be joining the Warriors for the 2011 season.
The initial plan called for Harding to join in January 2012. Instead, Harding has decided to pay his own way as a full-time student in the 2011 fall semester. He is expected to go on scholarship sometime in 2012.
Harding is projected to compete at slotback. In his room in Australia, for inspiration, he has taped up the best weightlifting and speed marks of UH slotbacks.

It appears Steven Stepter will be used as a football videographer this year.
Stepter was a hard-hitting defensive back for the Warriors — perhaps too aggressive. He was forced to accept a medical retirement after suffering from concussions. Stepter, who remains on scholarship but is on the inactive list, will fill the void created by Dylan Linkner’s departure. Linkner served as a graduate assistant of videos. Linkner left UH to pursue opportunities in television.

Harding should concentrate more on technique and form than reps and lbs. Was it only me or did he never break parallel on his squats? His bench technique is geared more for bouncing barbells than legit reps. Too many athletes get stuck in the hype… Old school is still cool…no worries though, coach Tommy will put him on the right path 🙂 GO WARRIORS

I dont blame scott harding, who recently turned 25, for jumping the gun to enroll early at manoa. he has to beat the clock as much as man coverage.
harding has made it known he has lofty aspirations for pursuing american college football—the nfl–and why shouldnt he? most american college players aspire likewise.
the chinese have a proverb that says, a journey starts with the first step.
in hardings’ case his first step will take him nearly 5,000 miles to another hemisphere.
but in so doing this fall, he relinquishes one year to acclimate to american football. as a full-time student, his ncaa clock will be turned on and harding will have five to play four. if he goes the distance, scott will be turning 30 as he exits college football.
harding represents more than a personal challenge and more than his country.
but rather, scott harding, represents an indomitable spirit of competitiveness–aim high….and never, ever, say cant.

I predict Justin Vele will play this year. He is such a big hitter that he will be a demon on special teams. He’s the second coming of Semeri Ulufale who was a beast for the Warriors under Dick Tomey. How about that! Tomey is the special teams coach now. Of course, Vele and Ulufale prepped at Farrington. When Vele hits people, ball carriers are apt to fumble.

warriors didnt redshirt mike washington or allen sampson. too bad, both players had electricity but needed muscle growth under their pads and could have used the extra year.
i sure hope they take a long look at redshirting ahmadi despite having good size and lots of upsides…..the exception would be if ahmadi absolutely can dazzle on return teams.
frosh receivers, generally dont crack the starting lineup in their first year….at least, at manoa.
ash didnt, chad didnt and dittos for salas. arent those three icons, qualifiers for your holygrail stuff? lol. pilares didnt redshirt, but he sat out a year before enrolling (left afa prep) and started at rb in his first season.
the reasons are well known. our rns takes as much IQ than talent in the first year.
ron lee always used to say, it’s not how fast you can run on a track to be a good receiver at UH, but rather, how fast you can learn to run the right routes. a simplified statement for sure, but dead-on accurate for a warrior receiver that formulates his route at the snap of the ball.
im looking forward to seeing ahmadi this summer–and i would like to see him play FOUR productive years with all cylinders blazing…..we shall see.
Substitutions:
ever notice that many college and pro teams will sub a RB or WR immediately after a play – especially after a long pass or run?
they all run “pro” type offenses that require timing and cohesiveness/team-work.
thinking out side the box – will an Oline coach make mass subs for a series of plays – such as 4 then bring back the starters?
depending only on practice will NOT provide the “game experience” – be innovative! remember when the “forward pass” was first used back in the 1920s?

speaking of holy grails and i dont usually, chris gant is worthy of mention. perhaps not as the holy grail (i only know of ONE), but as a juco transfer receiver to watch with interest.
again, football IQ counts of course, but from all first-hand accounts, gant has assests, mental and physical, that places him in the immediate impact category.
another receiver to watch is cecil doe.
he caught my eye in the spring game.
need to see more of doe this summer, but i just loved the way he snagged–the ball simply disappears into his hands. good size at 6-3 with a solid 200 lb frame he uses well.
we have assests at receiver and the slot and alot depends on moniz distributing his passes to all areas of the field and getting everyone involved. it should be fun watching our receivers develop. we may be reloading–wouldnt that be precious?

yeah we would do that too. if a guy just ran a few 9 routes, we’d sub him to give him a breather, but not for long. we usually rotate d linemen as well. but you don’t want to sub out qb’s, unless he’s totally messing up then you’d pull him out for a series.
Great news for Steven Stepter, Coach Mack has shown his commitment to his players education by keeping Steven on scholarship. BTW my son is in the same summer school class as Stepter and said Steven is a very friendly and nice guy.

Tuliau faced live bullets from day one and I’m sure we can agree that he passed the test. Now he’s a true soph and primed to continue his run to be one of our greatest DB’s ever.

that would be an interesting scenairo to sub the QB – a sideline view of a game may help if he is struggling – would it hurt the outcome if sub goes in for 8 plays?
plus side is the backup QB will gain “game experience” – something many of us complain about every year before, during and after the season
guess it will the coaches philosphy of 1) getting all the “numbers” for the seniors or 2) creating opportunities for the young guns to gain experience – when it’s a “rout” put in the subs – or is it more important to put in the subs in close games to get “da feel”?
anyone remember Wayne Dexter, 6’8″ OL from Wyoming who practiced for 4 years and NEVER smelled one play on the field.

Sorry I won’t be going to the away games. I was thinking about the WA game, but my niece is playing VB that day & so if I went to WA, I’d feel guilty not going to see her play at PSU. Plus I missed the cheap fares… 🙁
i thought the most compelling character in the movie, company men, was phil woodward, portrayed by chris cooper. ben afflect’s character was thirty-something. heck, ben walker (afflect) was still young enuff to carry rock sheet up a stairwell, two at a time. true, he gave up his country club membership and his exotic sports coup, but cooper’s character, took his life in despair. his soul sunk after a job counselor advised him to dye his hair and not to mention in his resume that he was a vietnam war veteran. how tragic is that.
moniz was pulled in the tulsa game to observe after two interceptions. than austin came in and gave up a TD just before the potty break. it goes both ways.
warriorsun: had no expectations when I rented the dvd; essentially, it captured what’s happening in Hawaii and throughout the Mainland. Very painful to watch at times and I agree, what happened to the Chris Cooper character was indeed tragic.
In more tragic news, it’s been diifficult to hear the reports coming out of Minot, North Dakota, home of 2012 Warrior recruit Dustin Adams Hope he and his family are safe:
Minot – The world seemed to disappear before the eyes of U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Theron Griffin, who stood guard on Saturday as the swelling brown waters of the Souris River consumed this North Dakota city.
Griffin was alone for most of the 14 hours he acted as a sentinel to the town of Minot, where about 12,000 residents have evacuated and officials are fighting to stem the record-breaking crest of river water that has submerged thousands of homes.
“See those rapids, those white waves?” Griffin said, pointing to water that almost swallowed a stop sign. “Those weren’t there 14 hours ago.”

according to our state sources, unemployment is at 6%. three points below the national average. tourism is rebounding. home sales are picking up, foreclousures are decreasing, disney is alive on the westside and state furloughs have ended. gov has increased spending, rail is plunging full steam ahead with the promise of jobs galore. taxes and fee hikes on the horizon? not a problem…..what? hawaii? tragic? everything is peachy and looking up.
Although there are exceptions, most employers won’t hire older applicants, because they worry that the latter will get sick too often as they age.
I know one blogger, whose hair turned prematurely white, couldn’t find work. She finally dyed her hair and was hired immediately.

Lynnwood is north of Seattle. Definitely less expensive than Issaquah. Issaquah used to have a lot of Boeing exec’s trying to get away from the city. Nice homes there, too. Lynnwood is a bedroom community to Seattle, much like Issaquah is.

if the RNS WR “takes what the defense gives”, how is it that the Tulsa defense was so accurate in reading what the receivers would do and thus shut it down? were the UH receivers so structured in running their routes that film study made it easy for the defense?
did the coach instruct the defense to “show” a read knowing that a receiver would react in a “fixed” pattern and they anticipate that move with a counter?
how critical was Pilares’ injury to the final outcome?

yeah, it ‘s a tough decision to make with qb’s. you don’t want to always pull them because it sort of becomes like pulling a pitcher in baseball as soon as he gets some trouble. you want to see him work through it. it usually takes awhile for our coaches to decide to pull him for a series. we did it last year with our qb against tulane. he was having a bad game and june yanked him for the first series or two of the second half. we came from behind to win that game. for us, the starters are still grasping the offense as well.
we usually try to keep the starters in there as much as possible unless we’re up by a lot. when we were really good on offense at hawaii, the seniors would have a saying to get the back ups in every game. because it meant we were blowing someone out.
AL: I don’t think Tate made a decision….And I will believe 100% and hope Tate does not go to SJSU

just know tulsa, to some extent disquised coverage. it wasnt sudden but as the game progressed the tulsa DC got a feel and countered.
in their pre-film prep they saw certain tendencies of both warrior receivers and moniz on reads over the middle. once they recognized how our receivers were keying on certain dbs they switched-up and sukered a pass into coverage. true, hawaii has certain reads and tulsa set the bait. on one int, salas was at first glance, open, but moniz threw into double coverage over the middle. im sure that was the reason he was yanked bc rolo, et al, believed moniz was bewildered and needed to see tulsa from the sidelines. bryant wasnt off-target as much as he read wrong and commited into their double cover.
turning to ur pilares question. jmo. definitely yes. kealoha was our go-to-guy along with salas. often an area was cleared and pilares knew where to go. it had to affect bryant’s mindset.
now, you have raised the big-money question many have asked about bryant. is he smart enuff to improve?
i believe moniz is still on a learning curve….and, only he can answer the question.
whether bm is effective in 2011, depends to a degree on how he spreads his passes and distributes to all 4-5 receivers. his favorite target is royce. if we know that and u can bet colorado and washington know that. im counting on others, like miah, to step-up….we shall see….
