Wednesday's notes

Because of the NFL lockout, players who were eligible for the draft in previous years are not allowed to participate in college-sponosored pro days this year. That means that former UH quarterback Colt Brennan, defensive end Melila Purcell III and cornerback JoPierre Davis are not eligible to participate in UH’s pro day tomorrow in Carson, Calif.  All three had agreed to attend until UH received a ruling saying those players’ participation was not allowed.

Here’s the pro day roster: Cameron Allen-Jones, Dustin Blount, Rodney Bradley, Jeramy Bryant, Lametrius Davis, Chizzy Dimude, Brysen Ginlack, Alex Green, Kainoa LaCount, Laupepa Letuli, Kealoha Pilares,Greg Salas, Mana Silva, Spencer Smith, Adrian Thomas, Bronson Tiwanak, Kamalu Umu.

* * * * *

Today was the first spring practice in full pads. Among the highlights:

• Slotback Miah Ostrowsi, who recently rejoined the Warriors after three months with the UH basketball team, did not wear full pads. He has to have two limited-contact practices before being allowed to participate in full workouts. Defenders were allowed to wrap up ballcarriers but not tackle them today.

• Marcus Malepeai, Desmond Dean, Beau Yap and Sonny Recca received most of the d-end work in place of injured Liko Satele. (OK, had a brain freeze, and initially mistook Waylon Lolotai for Recca.) While d-ends Alema Tachibana and Alasi Toilolo have more experience at that position, the coaches want to give more work to Malepai, Dean and Yap.

• With linebacker as the thinnest position, the Warriors have focused more on teaching techniques during drills. Aulola Tonga, who redshirted as a sophomore in 2010, has received expanded playing time. T.J. Taimatuia, who recently was cleared to practice, got work as the “elephant” — the pass-rushing linebacker position.

• Offensive tackle Jordan Loeffler did not practice today because of  “knee issues.”

• Nathan Johnson auditioned as a kicker today.

* * * * *

Looking ahead:

• The coaches’ talk-story social, which was postponed because of the tsunami threat, has been rescheduled for Friday, April 8 at the second-floor dance studios at the UH athletic complex. The event, hosted by UH coaches, will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Call (808) 956-6508 for details.

• Camp dates: Skills Camp (June 10-12), Big Man’s Camp (June 17-19), Kids Camp (June 25-26). For details, call (808) 956-6508.

* UH’s training camp opens Aug. 2 with an orientation for newcomers. The rest of the Warriors report Aug. 3.

“Tank” Hopkins. Unusual name. What were his parents thinking when they named him Tank?

  4. mctruck March 30, 2011 6:17 am

    Top ten…it’s been awhile!!!, yiiiihaaaa!!

On that note good luck on UH’s hopefuls on their pro-day workouts. giv’um!!!

Jmxxxx ~ Did you fall asleep during the movie?

  6. jm2375 March 30, 2011 6:22 am

Kekoa – #5 – nooooooooo, never…. actually it was a really interesting movie and I never did fall asleep, neither did Screecher, considering how tired she was.

Good luck to all the former Warriors at Pro Day and safe travels to the blogmeister.

why do you ask? Was she snoring?

My favorite theater is the Dole. Bigger screen and more spacious. I like to sit in the last row in the back. Less chance of getting dizzy.

Sad to read about two local Huskies forced to end their careers due to knee injuries. Recall one of them being one of the jewels of the recruiting class of ’08.

Best wishes to them both and hope they continue with the “student” part of student-athlete as UW will honor their scholarship conmmitment.

  17. al March 30, 2011 7:05 am

today’s omg award = you guessed it. ggh, his mother named him melvin hopkins. “tank” is his nickname of course.

  18. Hawaii#24 March 30, 2011 7:09 am

    Slugger,

Shoot me an e-mail or call when you have a chance.

  19. Pauoa Boy March 30, 2011 7:23 am

Wondered what happened to Kevin Jackson…glad to see he’s still playing football somewhere. I bet if he had all four years to play at UH, he would’ve been a defnite NFL prospect. He had good size and speed for a DE/OLB… Anyway, good to hear all our boyz playing in Japan is safe and sound, cause everytime I watch them Tsunami videos, makes you appreciate and enjoy life that much more.

  20. Pauoa Boy March 30, 2011 7:30 am

I like Royce Pollard being able to get a look at KR an improve his stock for his upcoming Senior year. He should be the next in line to take over the receiving reigns and run with it. He was pretty clutch last year in a couple games I seen when Salas and Pilares were getting jammed up. I hope he has a huge year and leads our receiving corps. Hopefully he gets a chance to run back the frikkin ball though cause what the heo was up with the returns last year? I know it was planned to just have Salas fair catch but frikk even if he didn’t he had no room to move. I hope Coach Tomey gets our special teams back to being a force on the field. Missing them KR/PR for touchdowns from my boy Chad Owens dayz…

  21. gigi-hawaii March 30, 2011 7:32 am

    al,

tanks for telling me about Tank. Is there a story behind the nickname?

  22. CoolEthan March 30, 2011 7:33 am

Kudos to not giving him the name “Sue”

    Sue would’ve been worse, huh?

  25. Glenn March 30, 2011 7:44 am

Anybody want to tell Gigi that his mommy named him Melvin.

  26. gigi-hawaii March 30, 2011 7:46 am

    Glenn,

Al just did — see above.

BTW, my father-in-law was named Glenn.

  27. Okole Maluna March 30, 2011 7:48 am

I heard a story about when he was little he used to always knock things down around his house. That’s the reason his mom nicknamed him Tank.

  28. gigi-hawaii March 30, 2011 7:53 am

ST should post a pic of Tank. Is he tank-sized?

  29. gigi-hawaii March 30, 2011 8:07 am

    OM,

    mahalo for the link!

He’s rather slim, isn’t he. Appears agile, though.

I guess “tank” probably referred to his clumsiness knocking things down as a kid, rather than size.

  30. Okole Maluna March 30, 2011 8:15 am

I’m guessing ST is not at Cook Field today (Wednesday) — Practice No. 8

On his way to tomorrow’s (Thursday) — Pro Day at Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif?

But can anyone tell me why Sam Ohai DT 6-3 335 from Central Lakes College in Minn.

and Salvatore Recca DE 6-2 250 from Kamehameha is not on Spring Roster?

Are they enrolled in school? I know they were few invited walk-on for spring…

  31. al March 30, 2011 8:17 am

pauoa boy…my take on the punt return situation. yah, it appeared that the blocking on the punt return team did not do a good job of it. it seemed that salas was always surrounded.

the way i figured it was, that they knew he wasn’t going to return the punt so therefore, they didn’t make a valiant effort in blocking.

  32. Couch potato March 30, 2011 8:18 am

a follower of warrior football knows who tank is.

practice like you play and you’ll play like you practice. now that looks obvious.

heard the coaches talk story is about the best places to go for spring break. only joke. jeez, now what would football coaches talk about? hmmmmm, the obvious.

good bunch of players to pick from for kick returner. enforce them with good blockers. let’s go tomey!

  33. BG March 30, 2011 8:22 am

    Good morning!

I’m sure liking ST’s descriptions of how the practices are being conducted. I’ve noticed how Coach Mack has made definite positive changes each year to address deficiencies. In retrospect, some of them were really bold moves…like young new coordinators on D and O. All of my personal criticisms have been addressed through time. I respect all the coaches who open and willing to correct mistakes. This year I have much higher expectations on special teams!

  34. al March 30, 2011 8:23 am

okole…i don’t think that any of the walk ons are on the list. seems to me that the published roster only has returnees, transfers, etc. many other walk ons are not listed.

  35. Kaimuki Kid March 30, 2011 8:40 am

    GiGi,

Hits like a TANK!, not clumsy, a hard hitter.

  36. Da Punchbowl Kid March 30, 2011 8:46 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

Tank’s mama named him that when he was a baby because he looked liked a tank crawling up the stairs. Thats according to his interview on the TV sports report yesterday.

And yes, he DOES hit like a Tank!

Top Forty for Travellin’ Tsing Tao Tom!

  51. Slugger March 30, 2011 9:19 am

    Good morning!

I didn’t make it to practice this morning. At Monday’s practice, Allan Sampson & Tank were FAST during the return drills. Whoever it is will need good protection. Since they can’t use the wedge anymore, blocking ahead of the returner will require alert ‘n quick reaction. IMLK (In my limited knowledge) 🙂

Good luck to the guys at Pro Day. Looking forward to reports from our fearless blog leader.

Please say a prayer for my classmate, Bryan. He can’t eat anymore. 🙁

Bought my first deep fryer.Doing spring rolls today, using peanut oil, what’s a good temperature for the oil?

  54. madeinhawaii March 30, 2011 9:46 am

Keep it between 365-380 degrees so that the oil doesn’t break down too quickly. Peanut Oil’s smoke point is 450 degrees. At that point, the oil breaks down and becomes carcinogenic.

  55. WOW ! March 30, 2011 9:52 am

  57. madeinhawaii March 30, 2011 9:54 am

Don’t keep the oil too long. One week at the most. If it starts to get thick, it’s not a good thing. If you cook fatty meats with it, replace the oil frequently. It’s not the cholesterol in the foods that will get you.. it’s the fat content.

Another pre-dawn wake up call for the Rainbow Wahine as they prepared for their departure to California.

They should be arriving in Cali shortly. Flight was around 6am-ish I believe.

    GO BOWS!!!

  61. Kazz March 30, 2011 10:17 am

    NFCA RPI UPDATED!

Rainbow Wahine Softball drops from 45 to #49 in RPI. 😡

Fresno State also drops a bit from 19 to #21.

    http://web1.ncaa.org/app_data/weeklyrpi/2011WSBrpi1.html

  62. Kazz March 30, 2011 10:26 am

Wow! It took less than a DAY for the RPI to be updated reflecting conference play.

Fresno State is essentially where we were last season with an RPI in the Top 20 and they too are seeing what we saw last season.

Last season we began with an RPI of #14 and then got as low as #19 or #17 I believe, but this gradual decline due to the RPI of the WAC itself occurred at a slower rate, this time it only took ONE weekend of WAC play for us and Fresno State to be effected.

If this is the trend, then the series against Fresno State this weekend is CRUCIAL more for us considering our RPI. Fresno State will want revenge for continual beatings from us last season, but in the grand scheme of things even if they finish 2nd in conference they can get the at-large bid as opposed to Hawaii where we will really have our work cut out for us securing an at large bid if we do NOT win the WAC.

  63. SteveM March 30, 2011 10:29 am

    Good morning everyone!

    GO BOWS!

    GO ST!

Was nice to see you and the wife at the game yesterday. Hopefully you were very happy with what you saw. The boys work very hard each and every day. Hopefully we are putting pride back into the program and hopefully the support continues to grow. I hope you are able to make more games cause was really good to see you.

Oh and if any of you out there are alumni or just want to see some baseball, please come out and support. Any support would be very much appreciated.

  66. Derek March 30, 2011 10:35 am

The last guy before Hopkins that had a nickname “Tank” was Curt Watanabe, former 3B for the Rainbow during the late 70s and early 80s. He was very good too. Played a number of years in the minor leagues, now a physical therapist. He got the nickname from pumping iron so much that he got real strong and big. I worked with his mother for several years and she’s a great lady. I named my son’s middle name after her hushand, Rikio. Thru her I met Derek Tatsuno and Ben Villaflor. Ah, those were the days!!!

But, football is in the air. Football drives the bus in the athletic dept. Basketball can do that too, IF, the team plays at the level of of VCU and Butler. Every mid-major must now think that they can get to the final 4 if they play well. I bet even Gib Arnold has these same thoughts, if he can just get the right mix of players in the program and play a certain style that fits the team to play the best. Butler has proven it with a methodical style predicated on good defense and keeping the score down. VCU is predicated on up tempo and lots of pressure tying to create havoc and hitting a lot of 3 pointers. What a great story these 2 teams are. The team that the least I like of the final four is UConn, but my head says UConn will win it all. Reason. Kemba Walker and the sleeper, Jeremy Lamb. My favorite, VCU. I really like their coach Shaka Smart, all of 33 years old. The guy was magna cum laude in college majoring in history, has an MBA in social science. He could have gone to Harvard or Yale. He’s been at VCU as the head coach 2 years. Their team and the coach is the stuff of movies, just like Glory Road the story about Texas Western beating mighty Kentucky. Woudn’t it be unbelievable if VCU beat Kentucky again in the final. Butler made it to the final last year so they have had their place in the sun. I don’t really like them much because they play boring basketball. I like to see an exciting team. But Butler is good and is effective. The most exciting team that I have seen and my all time favorite is UNLV with Larry Johnson, Stacey Augmon, Greg Anthony, Elmore Spencer, and Anderson Hunt. That team beat Duke 103-73 for the 1990 Natl Championshi, still the most margin of victory in NCAA history. Can you say mid-major team!!!!!

  67. Ralph March 30, 2011 10:35 am

A little fact about the RPI

When determining the RPI for each team, the following basic formula is used for the RPI:

    25% — Winning percentage.

    50% — Opponents’ winning percentage.

25% — Opponents’ opponents’ winning percentage.

Although the NCAA publishes this basic formula, it does not release the mathematical bonus and penalty calculations (such as a bonus for a win against a team in the top 25).

  68. kama krab March 30, 2011 10:36 am

    Eh Ralph,

Yah I’m part of the coaching staff. Started this year. Come by with D1 one of these days. Next game is at Mid-Pac on Friday April 1st at 3:45. After that is Saturday the 2nd at 6:30 at Ala Wai. Would be nice to see you guys.

  74. Okole Maluna March 30, 2011 11:09 am

    35. al March 30th, 2011 at 8:23 am i don’t think that any of the walk ons are on the list. seems to me that the published roster only has returnees, transfers, etc. many other walk ons are not listed.

Off the 10 invited Walk-ons 8 of them are listed on the Spring roster 2011.

Just those two were missing and wondered why? not in school? Injured? waived?

We could sure use a DT 6-3 335 from Central Lakes College in Minn.

Walk-on are traditionally hungry and put out more in practice… would like to see how he moves. Even tho we have 5 deep DT I understand he can also play anywhere on the OL and Center included.

Now just imagine we having a starting 6-3 335 Center on the line, he was listed as has played Right Offensive Guard which means he can move.

  75. Ralph March 30, 2011 11:10 am

Kama no forget the “level” swing from back to front. LOL

  76. kama krab March 30, 2011 11:16 am

    Bulla #72,

Thank you. It’s just something I like to do. Giving back what I was thought is just a blessing for me. I just thank Coach Gusman for the opportunity he has given me to give back to the youth at Saint Louis and I hope we are making those that have come before us proud of what we have accomplised. We do hope that a state championship is in our future as that is our goal, but until that opportunity arises we will continue to work towards that goal while being humble at the opportunity to play for the Saint Louis family. Like you say Bulla, make memories and that is something we as a baseball team strive for each day.

    Mahalo for your support

  77. kama krab March 30, 2011 11:22 am

    Ralph #73,

No problem. Just remember the invitation will always be there. That goes for all Tsaikos and others out there who would like to support.

    Oh and #76,

Always gotta remember the “level” swing. Can’t do anything without it. LOL

  78. Kazz March 30, 2011 11:28 am

They teach contant level swinging clinics at a facility at the top of Waimano Home Road.

Apparently they have a wise-a** coaching clinic there too.

  79. Couch potato March 30, 2011 11:44 am

how’s this for one level swing.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4e7p6nvA6po&feature=related

  80. kama krab March 30, 2011 11:52 am

    Couch Potato #80,

Nice link. Without going into that much detail, that is pretty much what why try to teach our kids. Good hand placement, solid lower body, and keeping the head steady. Easy to teach but hard to master. That is why repetition is always good in trying to perfect a craft.

  81. kama krab March 30, 2011 12:07 pm

That’s why it was funny when getting into that whole hooplah with WSF about the wahine softball hitting thing. There is way more that goes into hitting besides just trying to stop someone from swinging for the fences. If you go to anyone who is versed in hitting they would tell you that hitting is more then just the swing itself. It is more then anything physical that a player can do. It is also a mental thing. Having an idea of what you want to do in the batters box has just as much to do with the swing as the swing itself. Being mentally prepared to swing the bat has just as much to do with the swing.

The thing that I teach the kids is the game itself is not that hard but you have to not only be physically ready but mentally ready for everything this game has to offer. If you can master both then you will be a very good ballplayer. If one lacks then you will be very inconsistent.

Anyway sorry for the little off the topic rant but Couch Potato’s link just got me thinkin.

  82. Ralph March 30, 2011 12:21 pm

The Pac 10 begin their conference season this weekend, while the WAC, SEC and Big 12 started play last week. The top RPI teams will rotate positions as conference play continues but it would be tough for UH to move up from its 49 slot with a weak WAC schedule.

  83. Stephen Tsai March 30, 2011 12:41 pm

    Okole:

Sam Ohai is on the roster. Saw him practice. Think UH sports info needs to do some roster updates.

  84. Stephen Tsai March 30, 2011 12:44 pm

    kama krab:

You’re right in that hitting is a lot more than physical.

You’ve got to know situations, and you’ve got to anticipate different pitches.

Then there’s the whole thing about actually trying to make contact with a pitch that can rise, drop, curve, break inside …

RB John Lister and/or SB Corey Lau back at practice today?

#52 Waylon Lolotai switched back to DE from OLfor this morning’s practice? He was wearing a white practice jersey and practicing with Oline for Monday afternoon’s practice.

#87 … yes I watched the PBS Frontline yesterday. And I always thought that NCAA is giving an excuse to use student as an amateur status not to pay them… and just give them shoes and uniform while the NCAA and University making Millions off them.

NCAA could put in a Trust Fund for students athletes and collect after they graduate especially the one who don’t make it to the pros.

Finally found my way back here. Been really busy…

I spoke with Terry Brennan this morning and he mentioned, as ST noted above, that Colt was not allowed to participate at Pro Day tomorrow. (I was hoping to meet up with Terry.) What I don’t understand is that if the union is “decertified”, then exactly who can tell the players what they can and can’t do during the lockout?

Anyway, looking forward to seeing ST tomorrow and several of the ex-Warriors.

  99. Okole Maluna March 30, 2011 1:29 pm

ST are you in Carson, Calif today to report Pro day tomorrow?

do you also have a list of scout that will be on hand for tomorrow and who are they?

  100. mctruck March 30, 2011 1:31 pm

ST, ur#84……seeing how the kala$$ is tight all around, who does that chore for UH???

Maybe for minimal cost$$$ UH can hire somebody with experience to take-on this venue?, after-all…people want to know these things……the fans deserve that much.

  101. Kazz March 30, 2011 1:31 pm

The real CRIME in Fresno is how the Fresno State fans treat opposing softball teams.

Even I don’t give out cat calls to opposing softball teams. Yes, because they are female I have MORE restraint call it a double-standard, but my parents didn’t raise an a**.

Good thing I cannot watch this game on Friday as it will be on during the last two hours I am in the office. It’s bad enough I might catch a few words from what Fresno State fans will be yelling at us, I don’t need to be listening to that two-faced Jessica Mendoza all game long anyway.

  102. Kazz March 30, 2011 1:33 pm

    McTruck,

If you are referring to roster info. I assume UH’s Director of Media Relations Derek Inouchi is the one. Several people in that department, including himself are assigned to various sports. Kara Nishimura handles Rainbow Wahine softball and basketball, Pakalani Bello handles baseball and some others, and Derek Inouchi, last I recall, is assigned to Warrior football, golf, and some others as well.

  103. mctruck March 30, 2011 1:35 pm

  114. Okole Maluna March 30, 2011 2:16 pm

    Thanks Stretch.

I guess ST still trying to check in his bag… better hand carry then get lost baggage.

But here’s a news Headline just few hours ago: NCAA President: College Athletes Should Be Paid…A Little Bit…

After he kept saying on yesterday Frontline: but they are just students, they are amateurs!

They just gets free shoes! and he make $1.6 Million of the kids! Yes? No!

Hmmm, let’s see if there is any imbalance, shall we? Well, this year, the NCAA’s March Madness tournament is going to generate $711 million in TV rights alone (not including concessions, apparel sales, ticket sales, etc.). The Bowl Championship Series generates $125 million per year in endorsement money. The NCAA has a 14-year, $10.8 billion deal with CBS and Turner Sports. Coaches like Rick Pitino are guaranteed over $7 million in salary this year alone, primarily because his players show up to work every day (basketball games can’t happen without basketball players). So, some would argue that perhaps the system needs a little bit of tweaking.

It’s Money It’s Big Business It’s not Education anymore… half of the students on Top NCAA Finals don’t graduate! Where is the deal for students?

  118. kapakahi March 30, 2011 2:20 pm

A couple of roster # changes I noticed are:

    – LB Jordan Monico is #16 instead of #90 (as listed).

    – DT Joshua Manupuna is #94 (his high school number) instead of #48 (as listed).

Also noticed walk-on Kawika Borden (not suited) among sideline DBs observing practice.

BTW, both redshirt frosh DEs #53 Marcus Malepeai (frontside) & #92 Beau Yap (backside) looked great in one-on-ones. Definitely look that they’ll be competing for PT this 2011 season.

Also #93 (walk-on Sonny Recca??) looks like he’ll be a keeper. #20 redshirt frosh Desmond Dean has alot height & potential….but still gotta bulk up.

JMHO that senior OG Andrew Fa’amu & redshirt frosh OG David Lefotu looking solid in one-on-ones. True frosh RT Blake Muir also looking good too. True frosh RG Ben Dew is a big….but didn’t get any one-on-one reps.

    GOOD AFTERNOON HAWAII!

Returning to Oahu tomorrow – alert the media?

  121. Kazz March 30, 2011 2:55 pm

In my opinion, it starts to get “hairy” when one begins to consider monetary compensation to student-athletes outside of scholarship funds.

People that are truly concerned for the welfare of student-athletes need to realize that the one that participate in the TWO sports that make up most of the revenue for schools and conferences are truly the MINORITY in terms of the percentage of ALL student-athletes that compete in various sports. If there are about 400,000 student-athletes in this country alone (according to the NCAA), then 3-4% of ALL student-athletes play FBS football and perhaps less participate in Division 1 men’s basketball.

Are we talking about some compensation for only football and men’s basketball student-athletes??? While some may think that is “fair”, it goes against what I still believe and hopefully others as well.

I’m sorry but college is NOT a “minor league” development period for a student-athlete. Again, so many more sports are offered and MUCH MORE student-athletes will not play their sport for a living after they get their degree.

If one can figure out a way to compensate 400,000 student athletes on a basis of “fairness” then I tip my hat to you.

While many are caught up in a student-athlete’s draft prospects for the NFL or NBA, they are a TINY percentage of the bigger picture of a UNIVERSE of student-athletes that are looking to contribute to society in more meaningful ways while getting the opportunity to participate in physical athletic competition. Throwing money and compensation into the equation for “profitable” sports and the MINORITY of student-athletes that are football and basketball players only furthers the so-called greed issue that the proponents of student-athlete compensation are fighting against.

  122. Lanaiboy March 30, 2011 2:59 pm

Is it a big thing that many college athletes don’t graduate? It would be nice if they do. Unfortunately, it is not only athletes that do not graduate. The average graduation rate for all college students is 56%. For Hawaii it is 42%, which is near the bottom for all states. The worst is Alaska with 22%. The best is about 65%. UH is making a big push to increase its graduation rate. Should we expect higher standards from athletes? What do you think?

  123. Kazz March 30, 2011 3:05 pm

Don’t get me wrong, money is ALWAYS an issue for the majority of student-athletes. Especially when it comes to food outside of gameday meals or whatnot. If there is an amicable way for the NCAA to allow for some monetary compensation for student-athletes then that is great.

ALL student-athletes in ALL sports will consume more calories than the typical student due to the amount of energy and calories they burn off during practice, weightroom sessions, games, etc…

I just think that if compensation were going to be discussed, the potential for an explosion of Title IX violations and equal compensation would be a mess.

Just to be clear. If a Warrior or Rainbow Warrior gets extra monies to eat and a Rainbow Wahine doesn’t, I’d like to see someone justify that without looking like a bigot from the 1950’s.

  124. Kazz March 30, 2011 3:08 pm

    Laniboy,

Another question to your question is what sports are the graduation rates subpar compared to the sports where the graduation rates are better?

When the prospect of a professional career looms in the distance, it’s difficult for any young man to keep his eyes on the task at hand when people are all around him whispering dollar signs and sweet nothings in his ear.

  125. Couch potato March 30, 2011 3:13 pm

due to the APR, college athletes do have a higher standard when it comes to graduation.

  126. Couch potato March 30, 2011 3:17 pm

graduation rate for basketball gots to be one of the lowest. however, i would day overall graduation rates for athletes is significantly higher than the non-athletes.

Alaska has the lowest graduation rate?

    Shocker!!!! (Sarcasm)

When a school offers ultimate frisbee as a course what do they expect?

  131. LizKauai March 30, 2011 3:55 pm

    I watched the Frontline show.

Not surprising, but until there is a change of heart and organizations truly serve the kids they were created to help, thus shall it be.

Until their own greed drives them to ruin.

Perhaps the NCAA would make a good Undercover Boss episode.

  132. Lanaiboy March 30, 2011 4:04 pm

I noticed that the NCAA rates are different from the Federal rates because the former takes into account transfers. When you think about it, the graduation rates for athletes are impressive and those for black athletes are even more impressive considering the poor socioeconomic background of many of them. The numbers are higher than those of the regular student body. Of course the members of the regular student body do not have tutors and constant monitoring of school work as do the typical athletes. For example, the UH graduation rate for all student is 42%, while the graduation rate for the Wahine basketball program under Vince Goo was supposed to be close to 100%. Why the low graduation rates across the country? States like Hawaii has a philosophy of “open admission,” encouraging all students to apply for college, starting with community colleges. With “open admission” the number of students having to take “bonehead” English and math are very high, about 40% (sorry about that politically incorrect term). With the lack of academic preparation, naturally the attrition rates are high. Too me, athletes are a success story, which is not the usual take on this issue.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.

  225. gucci dog collars April 8, 2011 8:21 pm

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

  241. ED Hardy April 10, 2011 4:20 pm

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

  334. christian louboutin boot April 26, 2011 4:19 pm

If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.

  335. jimmy choo shoes April 26, 2011 10:21 pm

  336. links of london jewelry April 27, 2011 4:00 am
