Moniz named to a Heisman watch list

bm

Heismanpundit.com has named UH quarterback Bryant Moniz as one of 22 players on its 2011 Heisman Trophy watch list.

Here’s the link: Moniz.

* * * * * *

It is fitting that UH’s Circle of Honor, whose plaques encircle the interior of the Stan Sheriff Center, finally extended memberships to two of the building’s brightest stars — volleyball’s Yuval Katz and basketball’s Anthony Carter.

In particular, it was appropriate acknowledgement of what Carter meant to the school and, in turn, what the school meant to Carter.

During his playing career, UH tried to market Carter and Alika Smith as a basketball dynamic duo. While Smith was a very good player — especially on left-handed jumpers off screens on the wing, and as a crafty defender — Carter was a great player who made others better. Carter helped workmanlike players like Micah Kroeger and Eric Ambrozich become offensive threats. In a WAC era that included several future NBA players, Carter was the quickest from end line to end line. With a vertical jump that topped 40 inches, he also was the recipient of many alley-oop passes, mostly delivered by Smith. Toughness? Carter played his senior season virtually one-armed after suffering a subluxed left shoulder. Often during games, he would go to the sideline so trainer Jayson Goo could pop back the shoulder joint.

A few years before joining UH, Carter was a high school dropout. Through the help of mentor Llew Haden, who ran a nightly basketball program for youths in the Atlanta area, Carter earned his GED, attended Saddleback Community College in California, and then earned an associate’s degree. At Haden’s insistence, Carter donated $100,000 (from his early NBA contracts) to UH’s scholarship fund. It probably was his most meaningful UH assist.

After training for more than a month at the famed Athletes’ Performance in Carson, Calif., former UH running back Alex Green leaves today for Indianapolis, where he will participate in the NFL Scouting Combine.

Green said he will participate in all of the workouts, with an emphasis on the 40-yard dash. How fast does he project to run it? “We’ll find out,” Green said.

After the combine, Green will spend two weeks at his family’s home in Portland, then return to Carson to train for UH’s Pro Day on March 31. That event also will be held in Carson.

There aren’t many former UH athletes who give back to UH.
That’s what makes AC one of the exceptions — and exceptional.

I hope AC sticks with the Knicks. Because Karl loves AC–he specifically mentioned his disappointment in losing him–AC was pretty secure with the Nuggets.

Let’s debate who is the greatest UH basketball player, Anthony Carter or Tom Henderson?

Both were point guards. Henderson was more highly touted. Played on the USA Olympic team, although they lost to the Russian for the gold medal in a controversial play that the USA players til today refused to accept their silver medals. Also, led and won an NBA championship while with the Baltimore Bullets. Carter was the more quicker player and could jump higher. Both have had long NBA careers. Hard to pick between these two men.

That was a great gesture by AC to give back to UH. Hope we get to see some Knicks games when he’s playing. The Nuggets didn’t have AC come off the bench when I got to see a GS Warriors game vs. the Nuggets lat year.

#15 ~ Funny but true dat!

Also applys to the Magnum program, and some of the made for TV movies as well. When will central casting realize that the truel characters of Hawaii are all around them?

How many times have we suffered the assault on our local language? Pidgen is spoken best by real people like my paly, Koakane.

The surf scenes should have included Homey or James carrying UHFan or midori7 in ‘tandem!’

…and for the bad guys?…eh!…dey don’t call us Tsaiko’s wit out good reason!

There have been many of Hawaii’s “who’s who”, and law enforcement officers, lawyers, etc. who have been arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Most have learned from that DUI offense, but some continue to show their contempt and ignorence.

  32. papajoe2 February 23, 2011 9:31 am

The Utah player from Hawaii not only DUI, but driving on the wrong side of the freeway and without a valid drivers license. It have been a terrible accident. I hope he learns his lesson. Good thing nobody got hurt.

Moniz named to Heisman watch. I hope this is because UH was spreading the word. They said that they were going to campaign for Moniz to get the Heisman a while ago but I haven’t heard anything anywhere.

  35. tommui February 23, 2011 9:36 am

Happy to see Katz and AC honored but why so long with the Noga boys, Chang, et al?

  36. Da Punchbowl Kid February 23, 2011 9:38 am

I agree with you Tom. Why so long?

  37. papajoe2 February 23, 2011 9:39 am

#16 Derek, Debate on who was the better basketball player at UH? I was lucky enough to see both of them play for UH. Seems like so long ago, yet AC is still playing. I prefer not to debate who was the greatest and just enjoy the great memories I had of both of them playing. We also must add Bob Nash to that list.

  38. Da Punchbowl Kid February 23, 2011 9:47 am

    #1- HAWAII
I know, I know…Hawaii? Yes, Hawaii. They throw the ball almost every down, have done nothing to move away from June Jones’ passing offense and come on, it’s Hawaii.
If I’m a receiver and I want the combo of the chance to catch a ton of passes while going to school on a nicely located campus, Hawaii is a serious option.
The Warriors have had some of the most productive QBs and offenses of all time, and it always seems their receivers do better in the NFL than people think, except for Ashley Lelie.
Davone Bess is a stalwart with the Dolphins who went undrafted, and Greg Salas will be a mid-round steal in this year’s NFL Draft.
Catch a couple passes, get a good education, good weather, scenery. It’s like playing football on vacation, or is it?

  40. madeinhawaii February 23, 2011 9:51 am

Greatest BB player? … While he never played in the pros, there’s still the legend of Ah Chew Goo.

  41. papajoe2 February 23, 2011 9:58 am

Yeah! Finally! The Warriors are finally getting recognition on the positive instead of the media bashing us or making some kind of excuse why we were so good. With Hawaii’s bleacher report as the #1 destination on why a receive should attend UH, Moniz on the Heisman watch list, and #1 in long plays, UH should start NOW to secure wide receivers throughout the nation, if they haven’t already done this. Note about “Salas should be a mid-round steal”, wait until Pilares makes it too.

  42. BG February 23, 2011 10:01 am

    Good morning gang!

For the 1st time in 55 yrs, I woke up and was able to see clearly out of my right eye without glasses or contacts. What a blessing! Corrected my incredibly awful vision and got rid of the early stages of cataracts in one operation. So thankful that current practices emphasize quality of life instead of waiting for cataracts to “ripen” until you can’t read, drive, or play sports. Took less than 15 minutes with the surgeon. Didn’t even bother with the usual sedatives. Been poking contact lens into my eyes since I was 13…the surgeon couldn’t do worse. Best part was the insurance paid for it!

Less than 24 hrs and I’m seeing GOOD…and it continues to improve. What a blessing!

  43. tommui February 23, 2011 10:03 am

BG – great! Happy for you!

  44. papajoe2 February 23, 2011 10:04 am

mih, I’ve heard of Ah Chew Goo, but never had the pleasure of seeing him play. I guess I’m just not old enough. Just like the younger fans today. They didn’t see Bob Nash and the Fabulous 5, Tom Henderson, even Anthony Carter. Julius Erving in the pros and one of my favorites, Moses Malone, among guys like Elgin Baylor, Jerry West, Bob Cousey, Pistol Pete Maravich, Nate Archibald, and on and on.

I imagine there are off-field and post-UH concerns about some of the candidates not in the Circle.
    Then again, why cast stones.
There are off-field and post-UH concerns about some of the candidates in the Circle.
And, to be blunt, there are probably off-computer concerns about most of us. Life’s not perfect, and people aren’t perfect. But what some players did on the field/court, and what they did for the school during their career, shouldn’t be ignored.

  51. Stephen Tsai February 23, 2011 10:42 am

In 1992, Michael Carter led the Rainbow Warriors to an 11-2 record, including a victory over Illinois in the Holiday Bowl. That year, Illinois’ defense included four future NFL players: Simeon Rice, Kevin Hardy, Dana Howard and John Holecek. Carter was hit on the majority of UH’s offensive plays that year. By the way, he played the entire season with a broken rib. I think he deserves to be in the Circle.

  52. papajoe2 February 23, 2011 10:45 am

#48 mih, Thanks for the article. It was good to read something about one of the greats.

  53. Kazz February 23, 2011 10:46 am

Michael Carter was one tough SOB.

I give him a slight edge over Brennan for greatest UH QB of all time.

The WAC was tougher then and Carter and his team did win the Holiday Bowl.

You have to give Bryant Moniz credit for the many challenges he has met and dealt with successfully, especially the hole he dug himself into about a year ago and crawled out of without a whimper or excuse.
And according to Dick Tomey, Manoa’s resident Wizard of Oz, that’s what life is all about– overcoming adversities. Tomey has often said, “athletics is a sport that imitates life’s footprint”. Ok, that is the plus side for Bryant. He takes it on headlong and accounts through hard work ethic.

The nomination of Moniz to the Heisman watch list is yet another challenge for the former Leilehua prepster.
Indeed, while Moniz has put up stellar numbers that draw notice, he has yet to distinguish himself in the ring-of-fire. Thus far, he has one victory over a nationally ranked team–Nevada, but has been beaten badily in primetime against many more, including USC, Boise State and Tulsa. To be real, Heisman winners are just that–they win.

In another six months plus weeks, Bryant Moniz will face Colorado at home and WASH at Seattle. His Heisman stock will either do a Facebook climb or a Dunkin’ Doughnuts tumble.
Beat those PAC teams and ESPN will send a crew to Hawai’i for the remainder of the season.
This is one bottomline, that cant be sugar-coated!

  74. hawaiiansun February 23, 2011 4:11 pm

Disagree about the WAC being tougher during Carter’s time, although i agree he was a gutsy QB who played with as much pain as passion. Who could forget his aloha performance against Notre Dame with cracked ribs as he ran an offense where he was hit virtually on every play.

The fact remains the revised WAC, circa June Jones, sent its memebership to three BCS Bowls and National recognition and a consistent basis. True, BYU won a National Title, but that was before the BCS–which made it far more difficult, if not impossible to repeat.

I realize many have an opinion on both periods of UH history and prolly each has merit and no opinion can erase the accomplishments of Hawaii athletes who excelled on either side of the millennium.

  75. NorthShoreFan February 23, 2011 4:21 pm

    #73 & #74…hawaiiansun..you been taking the ginko?..you make too much sense!..lol!
inre.. Brian Moniz..imho, I could care less about him winning the Heisman but I do hope he has a good season and completes his work towards a degree. I admire what he as accomplished to date and if he gets his degree to finish out his career at UH, he in my book, will go down a one of the greats at UH.

  76. Pomai February 23, 2011 4:26 pm

Winning the highest award in college football is a process. Look what happened to Cam Newton. On Phil Steele’s college football magazine, Newton was the absolutely last player mentioned in the pre-season magazine. Things have to happen during the season to be in the conversation in late October, Nov., and of course December. The following needs to happen of Moniz will be a really viable candidate.

    1) The UH football team will have to be undefeated. One loss and he’s out.
    2) His best games will have to be against Colorado, Washington, and BYU.
    3) He will have to be ungodly numbers statistically. Meaning…..
    a) Pass for close to 6,000 yards.
    b) Throw at least close of 50 touchdowns.
    c) Throw not more than 5 interceptions.
    4) UH leads the nation in total offense.
    5) Moniz’s passing efficiency is close to 200
    6) UH is chosen to play in a BCS game.

If all of these things happen, maybe he might have a chance. In other words, he’s a real, real longshot. But as I said, it’s a long process. First things first, just beat Colorado on Sept. 3 at home and play well. Team first, team last.

    RE: Heisman.

The Heisman Trophy is elusive and will remain elusive for any player on a non-BCS level program.

With that being said two trophies that SHOULDN’T be considered “elusive” are the WAC Championship trophy and the Hawaii Bowl trophy.

All I want is for the Warriors to have a fantastic season. to get there, I believe they will need to stay focused and united. An unbreakable team.
No listening to the cheers or jeers or individual accolades…
    Focused.
    United.
    Unbreakable.
    Unflappable.
    As one.

And at the end of the season… let the stats do the talking and vindicate the truth about this great team.
    GO WARRIORS!

Kazz, when it comes to recruiting, we do not need another 1st baseperson, we need an excellent hitting 2nd baseperson, and a power hitting Right Fielder.

    RE: Softball Recruiting./1st base

I am only saying what I see.

    Already announced signed by Coolen:
    Kayla Wartner – catcher/ 1st base
    Leisha Liilii – pitcher/1st base

    Committed to UH also:
    Justine Tjaden -pitcher/1st base

Indication of Tjaden’s commitment to UH at:

    http://www.legacysoftball.com/Legacy%20Alumni.htm

I said that get plenty coming in after this season and according to this, this is fact.

So you have these girls in addition to Shannon Lum, Makani Duhaylonsod Kaleimamahu and Sarah Robinson, all three seniors in 2012 and junior in 2012 Jori Jasper and you’ve got plenty of 1st base players and that’s why I said that in post #106.

Whether or not they end up all competing for 1st base remains to be seen, but again, just saying what I see.

  113. Kazz February 23, 2011 8:37 pm

Correction to #112. I meant sophomore in 2012 Jori Jasper.

  114. hawaiiansun February 23, 2011 8:43 pm

    110, amen.
coach knows he has to get the #8 and #9 hitters going. They set the table for kelly.
I feel in my gut who Coolen will select to hit in the #8 spot but #9 is pure development given the current players.
We cant reach full potential without that spot producing. Wait and see….

    Kazz,

Can the DP hit for any playing position in the lineup, ie. right fielder?

Hope Coolen is keeping an eye on Sharla’s younger sister, plays 2nd and SS, could be another good one.

Talking with ST at the party, we were wondering just how far-reaching The Warrior Beat blog was in the world. Since I’m an old internet and educator-type, he has allowed me to ask…
IN WHAT PART OF THE WORLD ARE YOU READING THIS BLOG?
So, if you are currently residing outside the State of Hawaii, please post a message to say “Hi” to ST and tell us your location.

In my humble opinion (IMHO), JG may be going for his last hurrah at Portland State. JG is about my age – early/mid 70’s and this could be his last chance as a head coach. Of course Joe Paterno is in his 80s. Those coaches that are now head coaches in their 70s were head coaches way before they reached that age.

  137. 808ike February 24, 2011 12:10 am

Coach Cool was happy with the hitting this past weekend. Pitching was pretty good. The only poor game was the Oregon game.

This is a typical pre-conference road trip. Since UH has only 1 road trip before conference games, he want to play as many games as possible.

The first game is against #6 Oklahoma. UH will have an opportunity to scout the the team when Oklahoma plays #1 Georgia.

Iwata has confidence in her hitting this year.Last year, she was tentative and swung at a lot of bad pitches especially high inside. She also got frustrated when the umpire’s strike zone was not her strike zone. This year, she does have the mental focus but gets into a bad swinging mode when she can’t figure out the umpire’s strike zone.

In the batters box, Coach Coolen wants the batters to figure out the umpire’s strike zone. He wants the girls to adjust and not get to deep in the box, where a lot of our hitters seem to gravitate to. He doesn’t want the hitters to move back but to see the ball in front of the plate.

Majam–The games at home, the teams had her scouted well and pitched around her. The teams on the road are going right at her and making her make adjustments to the in-and-out, in-and-out pitching. Since the opponent’s pitcher has been pitching hard inside on her, Majam and some of the other hitters wear protective elbow guards. He has notice opponents pitching inside on the good hitters. (We can thank UCLA in the WCWS) Coolen can’t have the batters get hit with a 65 mph fastball on the elbow.

Sharla–When Coolen recruited her, he knew she had a lot of potential. She is very quick with her foot and hand speed. She also has a lot of potential to add a lot of strength to her frame. She has added muscle to her body that has given her the pop off the bat People are amazed how hard she throws the ball. Sharla was the immediate impact player that he was hoping she would be since he was losing Grimes. Since there is so much talent returning, is it unusual for a freshman to be that good this early in the season? Coach doesn’t think so.

As a coaching staff, he talks about the different recruits coming in and being the impact player. He goes after some developmental players and some blue chippers. He is starting to get blue chippers into the program. These blue chippers don’t need a lot of refinement, just need development in regards to strength. Adding his philosophy and the strength they already have, they will get stronger. Having freshman start on his team is something he strives for every year.

Coolen called late because he was having dinner at the Cheesecake Factory.

Kazz–Pomai can post the next Coolen interview for you.

  163. Pauoa Boy February 24, 2011 7:59 am

Good luck to our boys at the combine, hope they put up some good numbers and improve their stock.

Congrats to bruddah Bryant Moniz on the recognition as one of the top players in college football. Better yet it goes to show how good our Warrior football team really is. Moniz would not be recognized if it wasn’t for the OLine protecting his arse, the running back picking up the blitzing linebacker, the receivers running precision routes and having hands like glue… Lets not forget the defense getting the ball back in Moniz’s hands or preventing the other team from scoring or scoring more than us, giving Moniz the chance to score more touchdowns then them! It takes a team effort for Moniz to do what he does and I’m sure he’d be the first guy to let it be known. Moniz may be a long shot in reality winning the Heisman, but the way our football team is coming up it won’t be too much longer when our Warrior players and team will be mentioned regurlarly among the best, just saying…

Also, congrats to Coach Rolo and our offense this past year… and to think we still complaining about how we could’ve done much more, with all them big plays and numbahz… ayesoos!

  164. RedZone February 24, 2011 8:07 am

One big hole Coolen will have to fill is 3rd base. Mee Gee has come on really strong but I like his prospects who can play more than one position. I hope he finds another Jessica who can play SS. He could start her early on at 2nd to get game experience and when Iwata leaves step into the SS spot.

  165. Kazz February 24, 2011 8:07 am

Yes. Austin Wilkerson’s bat speed was around 78mph.

  166. Kekoa February 24, 2011 8:21 am

    K. Moore, QB Boise ‘Steak’ is also a nominee. Jeez wen dat boy goin’ grad! Seem like he been hanging around da Smurf turf foa-evah! Get a job!

  167. Pomai February 24, 2011 8:38 am

#164 – RedZone – One thing I like about what Coach Coolen has done is that he is re-loading rather than re-building. 2013 is going to be a tough year as we lose 8 players but if we keep getting the quality of players as freshmen all is good.

  168. Kazz February 24, 2011 8:48 am

    Redzone,

Another mix match is maybe to slide Iwata over to 3rd and see if Kaile Nakao or newcomer Jordie Burton can win the SS position. Burton and also Zamora are considered utility players.

  169. Kazz February 24, 2011 8:50 am

    Overall, we should be ok.

I guess I must be misunderstanding something (Newbie) but it seems to me that the ROM data that NdsCRC downloads is wrong somehow. For instance Fritz Chess is number 4071, but NdsCRC thinks that 4071 is “Solitaire Mahjong” and the .png files show that one instead, What am I doing wrong?

If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

  240. christian louboutin very noeud March 2, 2011 11:57 pm

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

Lisa Bevere is the first time I looked at a woman and thought she embodied feminity and strength and all that entails being a christian woman. Shes strong but not tough, shes feminine but not weak, shes wise and responsible with her marriage without being dominant , shes hip and is unapologetically sassy. Im so glad I got to see her speak in person. She made me proud to call myself a christian woman.

If you are like a lot of people you can simply overlook this. The best thing you can do is become relevant with yourself and faithful with your own morals. Generally this will lead to a mistaken and unproductive life.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current ipods owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)It’s great to exercise to.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.
