A sensible deal

To understand the triumph of the football Warriors joining the Mountain West, go back to 1998. As one UH official said: The Mountain West was created to get away from UH.

Now, the Mountain West realizes what it should have known then: The Warriors bring a lot to the table. Even Boise State, Fresno State and Nevada — all of whom supported the invitation — realize that.

From a population of about 1.5 million, UH’s pay-per-view and television contract generates about $4.5 million annually, of which UH’s share is $2.5 million. That’s potential revenue that now can be shared with the Mountain West. Boise, Fresno and Reno don’t bring added television assets; and if Boise State doesn’t get into a BCS game, it doesn’t bring anything at all. Boise basketball? Sure, as good as Boise surfing. Broncos don’t even  have a baseball team.

The Warriors also will be ponying up travel subsidies, an act so generous that, out of embarrassment, it has been dubbed “cost sharing.”  The San Diego State AD estimated that it could amount to $150,000 to $175,000 per trip to the islands. A Mountain West team actually could pay more to go to Boise, Reno or Fresno than to travel to Hawaii.

The thing is, all of this could have been the Mountain West’s in 1999, the league’s inaugural season. But by forming the league in a hush-hush meeting at the Denver International Airport — by the way, try getting past TSA now — none of the schemers bothered to ask UH if it would contribute to, uh, cost sharing. UH had once done that in a modified form to WAC visitors, and it surely would have agreed to it back then.

How does that song go? Sometimes the one thing you’re looking for is the only thing you can’t see.

* * * * * *

As I understand it, the Mountain West football teams travel by charter to games. Shouldn’t this open up the possibility that, maybe, UH should travel by charter, too? Sure beats hanging out in Ogden for seven hours, flying to Vegas, then scampering a mile to the next terminal because Southwest and Hawaiian don’t share the same gates.

  15. wafan December 11, 2010 9:42 am

The positive tax returns to the state will, hopefully, offset the travel outlay. Especially if those teams plan to buy or eat anything during their stay.

Always surprised how much stuff costs there.

  22. d1島 December 11, 2010 9:48 am

So if the MWC teams fly on charter jets here won’t there be room for more than just the team and its personnel?

Will the visiting team be allowed to sell the extra seats and pocket the revenue?

Would that work for the Warriors? I think I remember some disgruntlement (is that a word?) about that kind of arrangement to/from NOLA.

  34. POOH in SIGH December 11, 2010 9:58 am

    Mr. Tsai –

I was wondering, travel subsidy, “cost sharing”, the numbers the San Diego AD’s been throwing around, why not simply say UH, to get into the Mountain West more so than the Big West, bought it’s way in.

It pretty much sounds like “Hey, let us in guys”. “The WAC really sucks and I tell you what, if you let us in we’ll pay all travel costs, pick up the tab.”

    Sound about right…?

    Wondering –

One of the options for UH was staying put in the WAC, where correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think Hawaii helps any team with travel “cost sharing” right….?

Anyway, the way future of the WAC looks, it’s pretty safe to assume the Warriors would do very well, win a lot of games.

Going to the MWC to rejoin the group that stuck it to you over a decade ago, and basically pick-up their travel expenses, air travel that is…..

Well, I’m just thinking out loud here, Warriors “middle of the pack” in the MWC…..

    Thoughts….

  49. Stephen Tsai December 11, 2010 10:14 am

From a competitive standpoint, UH had to make the move.

But it is indeed a pricy move: UH has to pay subsidies to MWC and Big Wes visiting teams.

And I think UH will miss the ESPN exposure.

Then again, UH felt it might eventually have to pay subsidies if it remained in the WAC.

  50. Shoko December 11, 2010 10:16 am

    Morning folks!

I would think a more reasonable offer would be to offset the proposed airfare cost with what it would cost a mainland team to fly to the other MWC schools. Seems UH is footing the entire bill. It’s like UNLV paying the cost of airfare (minus accomodations) for Boise State to fly down to Vegas.

But then again, obviously UH wanted to be a part of the MWC more than the MWC and they had to make an offer that was attractive. Although it sounds like a bribe, what else can UH do?

Villanova headed to another FCS championship?

  51. al December 11, 2010 10:17 am

    if they were on it…

hawaiian airlines and the warriors would be sitting at the table right now hammering out a travel package which includes a charter agreement.

then, once the details are hammered out, they can go ahead with a huge ‘H’ logo on the jet that also has “the warriors fly Hawaiian”.

otherwise, snooze you lose. southwest and alaska air would swoop on that one real quick and jump in on the two way charters.

a hawaii only deal could be struck with all ten mwc members and that would get hawaiian air in all those cities as well putting their stamp on the local team before these new competitors gain any kind of momemtum.

  52. Stephen Tsai December 11, 2010 10:17 am

    POOH:

You are correct that, for now, UH would not pay subsidies to WAC teams. And I’m not sure if that would ever come up. Texas State, Texas-San Antonio and Denver entered the WAC thinking it would not receive subsidies.

And there is something to be said about winning.

UH would have dominated in WAC football.

Now UH has to step up in all sports.

  53. Stephen Tsai December 11, 2010 10:20 am

    A-House

My bad. I looked at the 2011 schedule on the UH Web site.

No BYU game on that sked.

  54. Kazz December 11, 2010 10:20 am

Chicken skin how we all wake up to a bright and sunny day after celebrating the news of athletic stability for UH.

On Thursday night, I was awaken from my sleep before midnight to the loud crackling of thunder and flashes of lightning. As I tried to fall back to sleep, I remembered the Twitter message claiming Hawaii fans should expect an invite the following day.

I smirked in as I dozed off again thinking how appropriate it would be to have such a landmark announcement being ushered in my elemental theatrics. The rain, the approaching storm front, the wind, the thunder and lightning. Almost like God’s way of saying, “You want it? You got it!”

Now, it has cleared. All the worries, all the sleepless nights, all the envy watching other college programs compete knowing that their athletic futures are secure, … all of that GONE.

The efforts of the UH Leadership Team came in like a storm front to wash away the dirt of the past three months.

I can’t help but think of that UH football practice I attended on August 21st. It was just days after BLACK WEDNESDAY for the WAC. I spent that entire morning just thinking about all the great memories I’ve had with friends and family at UH sporting events and all the emotions I felt as I lived vicariously through these student athletes and their successes on the court or on the field. It was hard to see the possibility that it could all come crashing down. What I wasn’t able to see at the time was 100 Warriors working their okoles off to have a great 2010 season. It should have been clear to me, but it wasn’t.

Then something happened. As the practice came to an end, the speakers on the field started blaring music. The morning was soon filled with loud cheers and players singing along to Bob Seger’s “I Wanna Get Lost in Your Rock and Roll”. It was eerie in a way to me to watch 11 on 11’s play out with this song playing in the background. Soon, I was almost brought to tears when lyrics like “thanks for the joy that you’ve given me…” (self-explanatory) and “I want you to know that I believe in your song” (thought of the UH Alma Mater, Co-Ed, and “Fight For Old Hawaii”… yes, I do believe in these songs.) made me think of my experiences with UH sports.

I left UH that day not knowing what was to happen. I privately shed a few tears at night tossing and turning… Still not knowing.

A week or so later, I attended the opening night of Rainbow Wahine Volleyball. As usual Jim Donovan was at the main gate greeting fans and welcoming them to the first official sporting event of the UH athletic season for 2010-2011. I usually don’t hesitate going up to him to shake his hand, but this time I did. As I went back out to meet some friends to get them their tickets, I approached Donovan right after the National Anthem and Hawaii Pono I. he remembered me by face, I shook his hand, he smiled, and I jokingly asked him if he has slept well recently. He nodded. He said something I couldn’t remember and I am sure I nodded as well. However, he said something to me as I walked away.

He said with quiet confidence: “Kazz, we’ll be ok.”

  55. POOH in SIGH December 11, 2010 10:21 am

    Really…?

Okay, I’m just figuring this out now.

Hawaii has to pay travel in the Big West as well….?

I thought it was just MWC because of football!

  57. Stephen Tsai December 11, 2010 10:24 am

I don’t care whether UH pays travel subsidies, hotel stays or even for Christmas parties. Any league is better than independence. Even a UH official admitted that. But it was a nice bluff.

  58. POOH in SIGH December 11, 2010 10:25 am

I’m wrapping my thoughts around the “Price of playing Poker” philosophy, at the same time, I can’t help thinking to myself…..

By picking up air travel costs, seems like most or all air travel cost by the sounds of it, isn’t that a lot of money….? I mean a lot of money.

I’m asking now, is it worth it?

It does sound good, and the prospects of playing MWC teams in football especially, are more attractive than the future WAC looks, no doubt.

  59. Stephen Tsai December 11, 2010 10:26 am

    POOH:

Big West commissioner said he expects UH to contribute to “cost sharing.”

Makes sense. Big West currently is an all-California conference.

On the bright side, there still will be home-and-home games. Commish says that preserves the integrity of basketball.

  60. A-House December 11, 2010 10:26 am

Cost sharing = payment for a MWC team to “charter” a plane to play at Hawaii – how much control does Hawaii have on this agreement?

For example, UH pays for coaching/medical/training staff and players. But not for others who will be flying in for the game; ie, spouses, etc. If the MWC still imposes a 60-player limit plus 20-25 coaching/medical staff, that makes 80-95 seats on a plane. Most if not all “long distance” planes carry upwards of 185 passengers. This means there are at least 90-95 extra seats on a chartered plane. Me thinks, the quoted price of $125K – $150k gives any visiting team a charted flight with extra space to sell seats and pocket $$$. Some will argue that is the price UH must pay for entry. Fine, but should there not be “equality” in the transaction? Again, I see a “bashing” of Hawaii by conference teams to “fatten” their bottom line.

another concern has to do with TV rights – will, say, Oceanic have to “bid” for the rights to televise the MWC tv contract games live and for how much? Giving up tv games we are accustomed to for ZERO? Yes, acknowledge that the “nitty gritty” is still a work in progress, but—-.

Perhaps, when it is acknowleded what Hawaii brings to the conference is LARGE in terms of income, perhaps more than any conference member, the MWC will voluntarily delete the “cost sharing” burden placed on UH. Trust me, I will not hold my breath on this one!!!!!!

  61. POOH in SIGH December 11, 2010 10:27 am

That Mr. Tsai, I agree 100%.

Independent to me, would have been a “near death” experience for UH.

  62. Stephen Tsai December 11, 2010 10:31 am

I view travel subsidies as paying a guarantee to a visiting team.

    $150,000 is a small guarantee.

Then again, it’s $150,000 per four teams it didn’t have to pay before.

Then again, UH has saved a few bucks by not paying Aloha Stadium rent the past few years.

  63. al December 11, 2010 10:31 am

had we not entered the mwc…the university of hawaii athletics program as we know it would have eventually faded in to the sunset. without a healthy football program to carry everyone else…the black hole awaited.

the trickle down effect would have affected thousands of us. the economic loss would have cost so many folks jobs, income, revenue, etc. to give you an idea, although not as impactful as say the shutdown of the naval shipyard the effects would still have cost this state millions of dollars.

this is such a huge turn of events. it is probably the most historic day in the life of the hawaii athletics program.

kudos to the leadership team who kept at it when all seemed lost. and jimmy d. what a job, what vision, and the man behind the scenes rockne freitas. all who displayed the importance of an independently run university system.

there are many to acknowledge including all the panel members of the bwc and the mwc.

we also need to thank byu, utah, and tcu who’s exodus from the mwc was significant in our invitation.

yes, jimmy d. what a christmas present!

  64. rage777 December 11, 2010 10:31 am

I think there it way more to this deal than just money. We have to remember that these are actual students who have to study and take classes. How much more time do these students have to study if they are only flying to California instead of Ruston or Texas? All those layovers and bus rides, I think they can spend taking tests or doing homework. The WAC might let UH play back to back games in Texas, but that is still 2 weeks away from the classroom. It would be worse if we have to fly to Ruston one week and another week flyback to Texas, that would really put a strain on the student part of the student-athlete.

  69. Pomai December 11, 2010 10:34 am

al your on the right track with Hawaiian air, but what I would like to see is Hawaiian make up a travel package for both the teams coming here and us going to the mainland. Say the team takes up 100 seats, that would leave about 150 seats that they could offer the fans so they could travel with their teams. I heard a long time ago that if a plane was 40% full everything after that was profit. They would make a pretty penny with the fans that travel with the team and the team could fly free.

  70. Stephen Tsai December 11, 2010 10:36 am

    A-House:

You have to look at it the way Fred Mertz did when he and Ethel didn’t want to pay the Ricardos for the ride from New York to California.

The back seat comes with the car.

When you fill up gas for the plane, it doesn’t matter how many seats are filled.

Then again (my new favorite expression), I tried that logic on my insurance company when I got hit from behind and the right side of my bumper was dented. Company said it would pay for half a bumper. I said you can’t buy half a bumper. Didn’t matter. Only got a check for half a bumper.

  73. Stephen Tsai December 11, 2010 10:40 am

    Re: charters.

Actually, teams want empty seats on the plane.

The old Aloha flights had three seats on the left, three on the right. Players would take the aisle and window seats, leaving the middle one open.

The money crunchers at UH probably have looked at the Dollars and Cents involved. It probably has factored in the cost to UH traveling to Ruston and attendant costs – our share in the MWC moneys and TV and ESPN up coming contract probably entered the equation. I don’t think we sold the farm. Garret probably has figured it out for us by now.

Hope we can work out some sort of charter deal with Hawaiian (or Alaskan or SW Air).

  77. Kazz December 11, 2010 10:43 am

  80. al December 11, 2010 10:44 am

the travel subsidies will be offset by two things…

one, i am sure attendance for home games will increase no less than 20% from this year in just our first year, 2012, alone.

two, rainbowtique sales will increase accordingly or better.

three, ppv will still exist and some increase will also be experienced and some of it will go to our pockets.

four, (gulp) expect a price increase in all forms of ticket sales and ppv.

five, expect an increase in attendance for wvb, baseball, and basketball (which has no other way to go but up).

six, better sponsorship dollars for the teams with a more solid conference.

seven, better attendance, viewership, and importance will bring more commercial and donors bucks to the coffers.

eight, and if the governor elect holds true to his campaign issues then we could see stadium being turned over to the university of hawaii and also have funded monies for travel (er, cost sharing). if not, then jimmy d for governor in four years.

    i could go on.

  81. tommui December 11, 2010 10:45 am

I suppose we could try working out a charter deal with x-airline bringing in CA teams in and out Hawaii team out of the island and then our Hawaii team coming back home and the CA being shipped out on or around the same dates.

And sell some of the surplus seats to rabid fans like Stretch!

  96. Kazz December 11, 2010 11:00 am

    LD808,

I believe Benson was quoted saying that the Hawaii Bowl “would probably follow UH”.

He said this in a presser after our first press conference on November 18th.

Sounds like he gave up already.

I do remember reading that the MWC has no control of bowls anyway and in this case if UH got bowl eligible the Hawaii Bowl would be on ESPN with no issues.

What was mentioned is how the MWC would handle it. What was unclear is if the MWC and the other members would be happy having a bowl where Hawaii gets the invite as long as we win 7 and other bowl eligible MWC teams get left out for some reason from other bowl games.

  97. al December 11, 2010 11:00 am

that is a gripe of mine too.

how can the nation’s leader in passing, etc not be the best quarterback in his own league even????

    (oh, i forgot he’s a system qb.)

  98. Stephen Tsai December 11, 2010 11:01 am

ESPN owns the Hawaii Bowl, so it will always remain.

Not sure if UH will have favored nation status, as they like to say. I think the days of UH being the first team invited to a bowl might be over. But, yeah, if UH is bowl eligible it should be going to the Hawaii Bowl.

  99. Kazz December 11, 2010 11:02 am

“Winner” fans are the ones that keep coming. NO MATTER WHAT. I’m sick of this end of a winning season and then flooding the arena/stadium non-sense.

I don’t think anyone needs to quote me on that.

We all like to support “winners” and as long as these student-athletes are busting their okoles off in every game, they’re winners to me.

  100. longdistance808 December 11, 2010 11:03 am

    LOL

  101. POOH in SIGH December 11, 2010 11:06 am

    Tsai –

I think that’s most important – UH needs to keep it’s affiliation with the Hawaii Bowl, that’s huge.

Al – I was at UNLV game with “Pooh” sign….! Yes…..

  102. Kazz December 11, 2010 11:06 am

Oh ok, so the SOLE owner is ESPN, but the obvious affiliation was with the WAC.

Hmmm… me thinks the MWC would have a hard time getting ESPN to accept other bowl eligible MWC teams into the Hawaii Bowl if Hawaii is also bowl eligible. Of course if UNLV had 8 wins and UH only had 7, I can see the MWC’s stance on the issue, but at the same time the Hawaii Bowl is now on MWC territory and a full Aloha Stadium for an MWC team in a bowl game looks better on Christmas Eve day than an empty one.

MWC should leave our exemption into the Hawaii Bowl alone.

BTW, it’s funny trying to explain the Hawaii Bowl situation to non-followers. They had no clue what happened in 2001 to a 9-3 Hawaii team… 👿

  103. Kazz December 11, 2010 11:08 am

Too bad the new turf at Aloha Stadium for the fall of 2011 can’t co-incide with a a NEW conference logo being painted on the field.

But asthetically speaking, the WAC logo is better than the MWC logo.

Since the MWC has 10 teams. If they don’t expand by 2012 to 12.. each team plays 9 conference games, right? 4 or 5 away.. 4 or 5 home. That leaves UH with 4 games to book .. 2 home.. 2 away… Does that mean on some seasons we will only have 6 home games?

Regarding the conference moves, seems some Tsaikos are suffering from Buyer’s Remorse.  We have to look to the future.

We should set our sights high.  Just as the President(?) of BSU says that he has a ten year plan to get into the PAC10/12, we should also look at the present move as a way to demonstrate how much Hawaii brings to any conference.

If our programs can win consistently, our willingness to help with “cost sharing”, the expansion of the TV time zones by 2 or 3 hours, and our top notch academic programs (astronomy, ocean science, East-West studies, genetic research, alternative energy, engineering, medicine, and law) make us an attractive package.

So we should let the administrators do the job with the finances.  We fans can help by supporting the teams by attending games and subscribing to PPV.  And our coaches and athletes need to do the job on the field and the court by winning consistently.

All we can do is make ourselves an attractive candidate if and when the PAC10/12 looks toward further expansion.  The only thing Boise has over us is the consistent winning of their football program.  We offer a lot more in other ways.

    al #51:

Can’t help but think that UH and Hawaiian Airlines already have had something semi-official in place to cover the UH football team’s road game travel.

One only needs to look at the UH football team travel routine since 2008:

    – Fly Hawaiian Air from HNL to the West Coast (usually Oakland)

    – Fly a charter flight from West Coast to Destination

    – Post game, fly a charter from Destination to Las Vegas

    – Fly Hawaiian Air redeye from Vegas back to HNL…arrive home 6:00am Sunday morning

Once we start Mountain West play, I don’t think that’s gonna change for UH, with the exception of road games against UNLV and SDSU where they’d cut out the charter flight…Hawaiian Air flies nonstop to these places, why charter?

  123. Not an Expert December 11, 2010 11:38 am

While we rejoice in the Warriors and Rainbows inclusions to new homes..I am somewhat saddened by this..

After 110 years of operation, the bankrupt Honolulu Symphony will permanently exit the Honolulu stage with its leadership deciding to liquidate the organization.

    http://www.staradvertiser.com/news/breaking/111725319.html

With more millionaires per capita in Hawaii.. we still couldn’t preserve such a rich, old legacy.

  125. Committed Road Warrior December 11, 2010 11:41 am

As for our future MWC foes, all but UNLV and SDSU are located in areas lacking non-stop commercial service to Hawaii, hence the charter flights for them. I’m not up to speed on how much charters are going for, but I suppose the number crunchers and economists determined that doling out $600K+ annually for 4 (or 5) MWC teams coming to Hawai’i is an acceptable cost that can be recouped in some form or fashion.

For a conference traveling squad, a Boeing 737 sized airplane (think of the planes that Southwest and Alaska Airlines fly) is the right size…anything larger and you’ll have more than just empty middle seats.

Our WAC foes at home this year who arrived by charter plane came in on Boeing 737 charters, just FYI.

  126. papajoe2 December 11, 2010 11:42 am

#97 al, except for Kellen Moore of BSU, ALL of the other All Americans on the AT&T team was from the BCS conferences. Didn’t like some of the selections, including Robinson of Mich.SU, making the first team as a back. Wasn’t there any running backs that had good seasons? I can think of a guy who had over 1,000 yards in a “system” type of passing team. The big OT from Colorado’s high light film wasn’t impressive at all. Also the commentator on ESPN said that now most of the schools are looking to the spread offense or 4 receiver type of offense. So are we no longer the “system” type of offense and yet still have the nation’s leading passer?

  127. madeinhawaii December 11, 2010 11:42 am

I guess it wasn’t just athletics that has a hard time filling the seats…

  128. Michigan Warrior December 11, 2010 11:50 am

Lots of bickering back and forth as to should we or shouldn’t we pay anyone anything.

I like the arrangement we gained.

We travel to California for all other sports. That’s got to save some funds on the crazy trips ALL of our non-football sports had to endure in the WAC every single year… and with lesser and lesser competition. We now (re)join the Big West, and aside from a couple of sports, we HAVE to improve in everything else. The announcement leaves certain MPSF teams alone for now.

We will be playing football in a better conference that is a couple of steps closer to AQ status. While making donations to the MWC, we stand a better chance of larger end-of-season payouts. Hopefully, our local fans will refamiliarize themselves with our stadium, which can further add to our overall bottom line.

But, the thing that excites me most…???

The amount UH brings to the table (even as a minimally-funded Mid-Major) in Athletics AND Academics must be an eyebrow-raiser to the PAC-12. We must continue on this forward path, and strengthen those areas that the PAC-12 will look at so that we may at least be allowed to submit an offer to them in the future. Laugh and smirk all you want, but I believe it can happen if we work at it. Utah and TCU are the latest examples to have accomplished this. Our local tv market may not be as huge, but with a large mainland fan base, I wonder what the comparisons might be like? We seem to travel better than lots of mainland teams. We can work at it to grow our fan base, both at home and on the mainland. I wonder how we compare to Utah and TCU in all other major categories such as academics, research, etc., and not just athletics?

As far as the Hawaii Bowl goes, here’s something from the Executive Director:

Meanwhile, Matlin said whatever conference the Warriors find themselves in for the immediate future, “our objective is the same: to have a place for them in our game when they are bowl eligible.”

    http://www.staradvertiser.com/sports/20101122_uhs_hawaii_bowl_opponent_expected_to_be_decided_dec_4.html

We’ll see how things work out.

  129. madeinhawaii December 11, 2010 11:52 am

Too bad we couldn’t change that .. “Would you like to donate $2.00 for the election campaign” option on our State Tax form to .. “Would you like to donate $2.00 to keep the Honolulu Symphony going.”… or maybe “Would you like to donate $2.00 to help promote equal opportunity in our State’s athletic programs regardless of gender?” Or some kind of multiple choice that merits something positive.

  131. Not an Expert December 11, 2010 11:57 am

    A new marketing scheme:

It is a known fact that there are many Warrior Fans on the mainland especially on the West Coast.

Being that attendance for those schools will increase when Hawaii plays them, UH should come up with an idea of selling tickets that will benefit those schools and Hawaii by promoting season tickets for the different sporting events or for the whole sports venue.

UH can sell a season card that when shown at the ticket office or purchase on line will allow the Warrior fan with a mainland address get 10% off the ticket price up to 2 tickets. The purchase for this season card to be $25.00 or whatever is needed to underwrite the cost of the card and the processing of the program.

Each school to get 80% of the revenues and UH to get 20% of it. This will allow UH to track how Warrior Nation is attending games UH plays on the road. As stated it will enhance the attendance of these schools and increase their revenues. This will also help to track numbers to help UH get into the PAC-12.

If 10 to 20% of fans are attending due to this program it can only enhance UH’s bargaining power going forward.

This is really thinking outside the box and the numbers and percentages proposed will definitely need to be crunched should an idea of this nature be put in motion.

  132. papajoe2 December 11, 2010 11:59 am

PPV has some Wahine volley and Men’s basketball in their football package now. When Hawaii moves in 2012, their conferences will be split. I don’t think PPV could split the different sports in they are in different conferences and need to split their profit with the MWC. Football only on PPV may stay the same as far as price charged because of the missing WV and MBB games or could even come down. Will Oceanic/K5 also offer the other sports exculsively on PPV to give a share to the BW? There goes free UH TV.

  133. madeinhawaii December 11, 2010 12:01 pm

  134. Michigan Warrior December 11, 2010 12:02 pm

#131… Expert… great idea! Easy way to track UH fans at away games too, as long as the majority of UH fans on the mainland (that attend games), are aware of, and use, this service. Save this one and pass it on to JD so they can work out the details!!! I like it, but there’s no “LIKE” button.

  135. kawika49 December 11, 2010 12:03 pm

  136. tommui December 11, 2010 12:03 pm

Re #131 – a friend of mine suggested that locally we sell one of those electronic cards that you would swipe (not unlike subway gates) that would admit fans to certain UH events like softball and (Presently) non-revenue sports like water polo, etc. It would not require attendants, ticket office hassles etc.

  137. Not an Expert December 11, 2010 12:04 pm

    Another thought:

UH in one of their advertisement states that they are playing for the people of Hawaii. Not exactly sure what the slogan is. The military population in Hawaii is a good percentage and ever changing due to revolving stay here in the islands.

UH should find a way to have the military become fans of UH athletics. They are seeds that will be deployed all over the nation and the world.

  138. Hawaiian December 11, 2010 12:06 pm

    Stephen Tsai,

Is there a reason for UH not announcing the BYU date next year in football when Byu already released their scedule for 2011? BYU comes to Hawaii on 12/3/11. Just curious.

  143. Michigan Warrior December 11, 2010 12:25 pm

#135… Kawika49… I think the point Expert is trying to make is, we should devise a system to be able to track UH mainland fans at away games. Buying tickets online at UH’s Athletics site may be one avenue of approach. Also gotta consider the many fans who live in or near the various venues we may play, be it stadiums, arenas, etc. Those fans may just drive/walk up to buy tickets, with no proceeds going to UH, and no way to track that they are UH fans attending an away game. Also would have to coordinate with all schools involved, if we could buy tickets from UH online, and just pick it up at the away game ticket office.

But, we already have UH Students showing up with their school ID to gain entrance at home games. System might be similar for tracking purposes.

  144. kruzen December 11, 2010 12:29 pm

When we switch conferences in 2012, UH should better market are UH gear as UH has one of the best looking logos in the nation. If I’m not mistaken the logos sales don’t go directly to UH athletics but it gives the UH brand more exposure.

  145. Not an Expert December 11, 2010 12:29 pm

The Hawaii Visitors Bureau with the US government should promote a game between Army and Navy in the islands. As Kawika49 mentioned military population north of 50,000 people.

The game between the military institutes has been played in 9 different cities. Why not once in Hawaii for the military population not only here in Hawaii but for all the military personnel located all over the Pacific Rim. The excitement and energy will be a positive for Hawaii as well as for our men and women who serves to protect our country. Imagine what enhancements television can do to help promote recruitment into the military with Hawaii being part of the focal point.

    Anyone going to the ProBowl?

  152. Pride. December 11, 2010 12:50 pm

  153. madeinhawaii December 11, 2010 12:55 pm

Why not make an UH Alumnae card that offers points or discounts to various shops around the islands and tickets via UH or any other sponsoring entity here and abroad? Points can be saved up to purchase tickets for away games. Sponsoring stores will be invoiced for the number of points they award each quarter.

  154. LizKauai (macbook) December 11, 2010 12:55 pm

Hopefully, they HAVE been focusing on Tulsa.

No-huddle offense is another problem to solve.

  155. madeinhawaii December 11, 2010 12:57 pm

Make that a Koa Anuenue.. or Na Koa UH alumnae card… where proceeds are dog-eared for the Athletic department.

  156. madeinhawaii December 11, 2010 12:58 pm

Against the no-huddle, I think we need two different sets of defensive backs.. each group of guys plays until the chain is moved. Switch in.. switch out.. keep them warm but also keep their legs and minds fresh.

or is it better to fill the arena/stadium?

  158. madeinhawaii December 11, 2010 1:00 pm

Maybe even two sets of Defensive Ends… The Dline closes the gaps… keeps the runner from coming up the middle.. the DEs.. contain the outside forcing the pass…. the fresh backs need to play the ball.

  159. d1島 December 11, 2010 1:04 pm

We need to start focusing in Tulsa. Not going to be a cakewalk.

    From Thursday

The football team went through early-morning running. Another running session is scheduled for tomorrow. With finals next week, and the team having missed 20 school days because of travel, this has been a much-needed time to catch up on projects.

    From Tuesday

The Warriors will resume conditioning drills tomorrow, but will not have actual practices until next week.

  160. d1島 December 11, 2010 1:12 pm

    Tulsa is taking full advantage.

A hidden benefit to playing in the Hawaii Bowl for the University of Tulsa football team will be the practices leading up to it.

The Golden Hurricane will work a total of 15 times preparing for the Dec. 24 game against 24th-ranked Hawaii in Honolulu’s Aloha Stadium.

  161. d1島 December 11, 2010 1:13 pm

    Tulsa practiced last weekend.

    Tulsa is practicing this weekend.

TU went in three split sessions over the weekend, with the younger players getting extra time for individual instruction. The Hurricane will conduct three more split sessions next Friday, Saturday and Sunday before narrowing its focus to bowl preparation.

I wonder if the Warriors will be having 15 practices for the game?

  165. d1島 December 11, 2010 1:20 pm

    mih,

Yep. It’s nice that the team has been able to read all the articles about their ranking; watching news stories about moving to a better conference; hearing about all-conference placements.

Those should all come in handy around 5:15 in the afternoon on Christmas Eve in Aloha Stadium.

Do you know what the practice schedules were in the past several UH bowl games?

The coaches have been great this season, so I have faith that the coaches are developing a game plan to implement on the week after finals and have the experience to know how much practice is necessary.

  171. kawika49 December 11, 2010 1:41 pm

I think the D needs conditioning for the no huddle this week, then technique next wk.

The O should do the same, then go back to our old no huddle.

  172. d1島 December 11, 2010 1:42 pm

    kruzen,

Let’s all agree that the prep schedules for the past several bowl games weren’t the clear “Road to Success”

  173. d1島 December 11, 2010 1:44 pm

But the 15 practices aren’t really all about game prep.

For teams participating annually in postseason play, the 15 extra sessions add up to an extra three months of practice time – nearly a full extra season – over a four-year span.

Graham said the extra time in December propels a team into spring drills.

“I think you’re just further ahead and guys are further along in the teaching progression,” he said.

TU had a number of promising freshmen this season whose development could accelerate with the extra practice time over the next few weeks.

Sounds like a coach who’s *really* interested in building for the future.

I used the term “Buyer Remorse” in an earlier post so Old Diver is getting blamed for something he didn’t do.

I was not singling anyone by my remark as several questioned the cost of the deal. It’s a done deal so I think we should look at ways to take advantage of the situation.

By the way, thanks to you and Mrs A-House for the card. We usually don’t get one out until Christmas is upon us. Great procrastinators.

  189. Committed Road Warrior December 11, 2010 2:35 pm

    al #176:

The last sentence in my post #122 should have been clarified to say “Why should we have to pay to fly UNLV and SDSU to Honolulu via charter flight?” Other than that, your points are valid and I agree with them. Flying charter is perhaps the most feasible way for teams like Boise and New Mexico to get to HNL.

Of course, it wouldn’t shock me one bit come 2012 and we’re paying the cost to fly visiting MWC teams to HNL by charter flight, yet UH is still doing the same “Hawaiian Air-Charter Flight-Charter Flight-Hawaiian Air” routine it’s been doing for years.

  195. Michigan Warrior December 11, 2010 2:58 pm

#150… GmaHoney… I know that can be done for home games. But, is this procedure for away games also? And continuing on, if that is an available feature, at least UH can track some mainland fans that way. But, they still have no way of tracking those who live on or visiting the mainland, and walk up to the ticket offices to purchase tickets specifically to watch UH games. Plus, doing this would not afford UH any percentage of ticket revenues if such a deal could be worked out.

#147… Expert… Mahalo for your kind words. But I must say, there are many, many fans here who we all learn from. I enjoy participating with so many different people who all share our same love for UH.

#25… Pomai… I agree with most of your prediction. I think, if we can fill in all da pukas from this year’s graduation, and everyone can get it together quickly during the off-season, I think we have a great chance at going undefeated. I have great confidence in our coaching staff and our returning players. I think we may find LaTech a challenge. But with the departure of Boise, I don’t think the voters will push us high enough to get into a BCS game. My guess? We go undefeated, but no BCS bowl.

#157 kruzen. Some people just don’t have the means to go to the games but would purchase PPV. Also, some people complained about the horrible handicap area or getting to the area. I had season tickets many years ago for almost 20 seasons and used to attend games at the old Honolulu Stadium. My better half then started working the night shift and I couldn’t give away the tickets during the Von Appen era. We now go to my brother’s house to watch the games and commercials too. I also live on a fixed income, like sooo many long time UH fans, and cannot afford to buy season tickets. Sure it may be more profitable for all true UH fans to buy season tickets, or look better on TV, but, by UH gaining $2.5 mil a year in PPV, at least we are helping the athletic department in another way. Please don’t take this post as angry or bitter as I just want to let the younger UH fans know that we still backing UH as much as feasible. I truly wish we would fill the Aloha Stadium for every home game, its just that it probably won’t be with me or many handicapped/fixed income fans there. But I never say never.

This message from Civil Emergency Management in Iowa:

BOONE COUNTY EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT WILL ONLY BE OFFERING ASSISTANCE

TO STRANDED MOTORISTS WHO HAVE ALREADY CALLED LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT

    AUTHORITIES THIS EVENING.

ANY FURTHER REQUESTS FROM MOTORISTS THIS EVENING AND OVERNIGHT

WILL NOT RECEIVE ASSISTANCE UNLESS THERE ARE INJURIES. BOONE

COUNTY EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT STRESSES THAT IT IS TOO DANGEROUS TO

SEND OUT EMERGENCY PERSONNEL UNLESS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY AND

REQUESTS THAT PEOPLE NOT TRAVEL THROUGHOUT THE COUNTY.

In other words, If you enuf of an idiot to be out driving in this blizzard, you on your own! And will probably be less likely to produce progeny!

I just hope that the powers that be, explain to their mainland counterparts; that we are a state composed of eight Islands, not four political sub-divisions. We do not have the luxury of just driving to Oahu. Of course, if we want to save money, we could given time, swim.

  225. wafan December 11, 2010 3:50 pm

    ppj2 . . .

Was thinking about that earlier today. Currently we are able to get some of the Warrior games on the internet. Will that option still exist in the Fall of 2012? Or is 1420 going to be our only option? Seems to be a step backward in terms of media availability.

And, no, the Mountain is not available here on this side of the hill. Do not know about the Eastern side.

The idea of some kind of tracking card that allows for discounted access to away games might be a workable item affording UH the ability to provide “real-time” numbers when negotiating with media and conferences. Difficult to argue with facts!

    2) Moniz has the following statistics:

    5,000 to 6,000 yards passing

    40 or more touchdowns passing

Keys for a successful season: UH defense, turnover margin, offensive line.

They would have been sleeping at the airport. Supposed to feel like 40 below tomorrow with the Wind Chill in the north of MN where he’s working on his teaching certificate. So glad he’s here.

Just saw part of the Sports news on KGMB and they were talking about voting for Tiwanak until Monday. Did someone mention this in the blog? I haven’t had time to go back through the blog yet. Merci beaucoup!

PAC-12: As noted above Hawai’i MUST demonstrate Consistent Financial, Academic and On-Field Excellence (to be the Next UTAH and Beat Boise there — GOT TO Beat The BC Schools every opportunity, WORK OUR Japan, Korea, China, Philippines, AUSSIE/NZ markets … …)

probably WOULD Have dominated the WAC, but So WHAT about being a Big Fish in a little pond … you’re still in a little pond (and Farther from the BCS)…. Jeff’s analogy of being the Biggest House in a Poor Neighborhood is accurate, we would be ‘over-achieving’, but still over-priced in a Poor Neighborhood …

  244. A-House December 11, 2010 5:46 pm

On our last visit to Vegas, Midori noticed that MasaBoy via Cox cable network carried the MWC channel and she was able to watch several MWC football games.

Don’t know how many UH fans in Nevada realize this, but worth spreading the word.

Any another cable network outside of Vegas that carries the MWC network? May be worth checking out local cable companies to see if available.

For example, Oceanic offers the “sports network” package which included the Army and Colorado games plus Big 10 and NBA all for $6 per year or was it per month.

  245. townieone December 11, 2010 5:47 pm

The story about SMU’s death penalty is on air right now 5:45pm on ESPN. I think they talk about the Hawaii Bowl at the end of the story…so I guess that means UH and JJ might be mentioned.

Perhaps, in the very near future, someone will explain how viewing the TV games will work with the MWC tv contract(s) and how this will impact UH fans in Hawaii and on the mainland.

Realize that football is the 2000# gorilla for Oceanic, but it also have K-5 telecast of basketball, volleyball, softball, and baseball. Is this all but gone?

  249. A-House December 11, 2010 5:53 pm

Someone posted recently that Boise or Fresno had won about 37 games against BCS schools.

How many has Hawaii won? Way back when, they beat Nebraska and Washington. Would this count in the final total?

  252. townieone December 11, 2010 6:00 pm

My blood is running hot after listening to SMU’s AD talk about the aquisition of JJ. I’m not mad at him…just Herman for making it all possible.

  253. Shoko December 11, 2010 6:02 pm

Speaking of SMU, that 30 for 30 documentary on the Mustangs was pretty good.

  254. A-House December 11, 2010 6:04 pm

I don’t know if the Cam Newton story is over as the FBI investiagation is still ongoing. Look how long it took with Reggie Bush.

I agree with many people that the coaches during the time of the infraction should suffer some consequences. Of course with USC the HC left for the NFL. Still sanctions can exist with out expiration should that coach attempt to return to college football. Is that legal?

  255. A-House December 11, 2010 6:06 pm

Fumbler, Fumbler – what has thou art created at UH? How much longer do we have to face all the mistakes of your tenure as UHAD?

  256. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc December 11, 2010 6:08 pm

We’re going to be leaving in about ten minutes for tonight’s basketball game, but here’s a quick answer to #141/129. Develop the concept and then make an appointment to see St. Senator David Ige, Chair of Ways & means as well as your own state senator. Discuss the concept and see if either or both would be willing to sponsor a bill.

Once the House is organized, do the same with the individual who is your state representative and the Chair of the Finance Committee.

At the same time, contact the chairs of the Education/Higher Education in both chambers to get their support on the bill. In the Senate, that’s Jill Tokuda and the House is still not yet known.

Then, there’s another process of getting the public involved – going to Neighborhood Boards, sending information to school/community councils, the Board of Education & the Board of Regents, the Abercrombie Administrtion, the media, etc., etc.

On a very much related subject but not necessarily sports-related, be sure to visit the Island Innovation Fund’s website http://www.islandinnovation.org/ and scroll through the brief descriptions of the 185 proposals covering all kinds of topics ranging from student film-maing projects to providing medical services to at-risk seniors to generating new economic activities – including ours on p. 7 THE CAPITOL-IST PROJECT. The winners whose proposals generate the most comments and connections to the community – however that may be definied – will be invited to submit a full-on application for a grant which can be as much as $100,000 per winner.

Off to see the Rainbow Warriors.

  257. A-House December 11, 2010 6:09 pm

I found your post on another site re: Bronson Tiwanak nominated for the Rudy Award.

K, we have till Monday to vote.

  264. gigi-hawaii December 11, 2010 6:42 pm

    Tommui,

With your bad back, watching ppv at home is the way to go. You won’t get any criticism from me regarding that.

David says there are now railings at the stadium. He saw them on TV. Doesn’t know if they are everywhere, though. Might be just certain sections.

  265. jm2375 December 11, 2010 6:52 pm

hand railings in all the lower orange sections. hope they add in railings in the upper level seats (along with new seats!) soon.

no hand rails in SSC either, although it’s not as bad.

  266. jm2375 December 11, 2010 6:54 pm

    GO WARRIORS!

  269. mctruck December 11, 2010 7:08 pm

Since UH will not enter MWC play until 2012….might be a very good idea for whomever the media people are at UH make sure that the rest of the conference and their media outlets are on the same page when referring to our Football team as, “WARRIORS” and not, “RAINBOWS.” just sayin.

  270. mctruck December 11, 2010 7:11 pm

So Scam won the, HEISTman award. what a shame, my opinion.

  271. mctruck December 11, 2010 7:15 pm

The BWC should have an adventure figuring what to call the rest of UH’s sports teams???

    Let’s go Warriors!

  273. mctruck December 11, 2010 7:18 pm

  277. d1島 December 11, 2010 7:30 pm

Is the UHAD already missing an opportunity?

10-3 season with a Hawaii Bowl appearance and the MWC announcement yesterday yet nary a word regarding season ticket renewals; PSC solicitations; AKA membership push.

Was nothing learned from the ’07 season aftermath?

  278. Old Diver December 11, 2010 7:45 pm

    d1

At UH rules are rules, with all the registration problems they had extending the time for registration was not an option. Taking advantage of the of the new excitement created by the success of the football team and the move to the MWC? Rules are rules.

  279. d1島 December 11, 2010 7:49 pm

What are the rules regarding collecting names of people?

  280. madeinhawaii December 11, 2010 7:53 pm

They are afraid to do that.. look what the prof did with 40,000 alumni personal information!

  281. d1島 December 11, 2010 7:53 pm

What are the rules that limit AKA from seeking new members?

  282. d1島 December 11, 2010 7:54 pm

Why has the coach that is most affected seemingly gone into hiding?

  283. Pcwarrior December 11, 2010 8:00 pm

Old diver… Think it’s time to change the rules! Or in other cases, keep the investigation open for 2-3 years and then strip the heisman. I mean rules are rules.

  284. madeinhawaii December 11, 2010 8:34 pm

Are we in the Quiet period or are the coaches actively recruiting?

  285. Old Diver December 11, 2010 8:36 pm

I was agreeing with you on ticket renewals, didn’t mean to imply there were rules against AKA seeking new members.

  286. d1島 December 11, 2010 8:39 pm

Which is why they seem MIA… good luck to them. Hope to hear some good news regarding recruits … Nice to know, though, that our cup is more than half-full. Our immediate needs aren’t as critical as years past and the coaches can be a little more finicky.

  291. jm2375 December 11, 2010 9:27 pm

mih – remember the UNLV coach whining about not wanting to play because he lost a week of recruiting time?

  292. OldDiver December 11, 2010 9:27 pm

Kinda dreading the day after December 24th. Gonna have to get my next high on basketball, men’s volleyball, softball and baseball. Thinking about it there’s a lot to look forward to after football, some of our finest moments came during the baseball and softball season and there’s renewed interest in basketball and volleyball. Hmmm, actually we University of Hawaii fans are quite a lucky bunch.

Go Warriors, Go Bows, Go NaWahine!, did I forget anyone?

mctruck — maybe less of a problem in 2012. The only UH team playing in the MWC are the Warriors. So shouldn’t have much confusion in there. Then the 2012 Big West have the Rainbows (as in the past). 😕

  294. papajoe2 December 11, 2010 9:57 pm

So, Cam Newton won the Heisman. After all, he accounted for 49 touchdowns. Hey! Wait a minute! Wasn’t there some guy who threw for 58 touchdowns back in 2006? He must have been a “system” qb. I wonder if he scored any on some runs? Added to his 58, hmmmm……..

  295. SteveM December 11, 2010 10:06 pm

So all the MWC football teams travel here by charter jets.

UH ticket sales (season or otherwise), is not shared with the MWC, right? (not like TV $$$)

A 6:30 or 7:00 PM game time will probably boost sales/attendance… perhaps the AD should do a fan survey on this…

  296. jm2375 December 11, 2010 10:09 pm

    Good evening Tsaikos.

boy.. thought I got smuud last nite when da blog went down…

    POOH

from a lil guy in da outta islands, getting into the MWC and BWC is a BIG DEAL. a very very big deal. makes us feel like we living next to da Jeffersons.

    PRIDE

was reading your comment about da 81 team. i feel your pain. 😀 i really do… because nobody respects us WAC guys.

plus, now we get to buss up Nevada and Fresno samoa. and BY WHOO. yup, life is good.

an so is da mine.. mine… mine….

  299. Kazz via DROID.X December 11, 2010 10:14 pm

Watching the SMU 30 for 30 episode.

I LOVE the death penalty idea for repeat offenders!!!

  300. bighilofan2 December 11, 2010 10:16 pm

for the BY WHOO, i’ll go with 5:30. For Fresno and Nevada, definitely 7:30 😀

  301. bighilofan2 December 11, 2010 10:20 pm

playing BY WhOO has always been my idea of a good time. and having Hawaiian fly a plane with the H logo on da mainland route, no matta what, is da good idea for a corporate sponsor.

    Pride

ahem… I was thinking the same thing for a Matson ship, 😀

  302. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc December 11, 2010 10:20 pm

I support 1 pm or 2 pm football games – the sport was invented to be played in daylight – like baseball. The first time I ever attended a college game at night was here in Hawai`i. In fact, I’m not even sure if there lights at any of the PAC 10 stadia back in those early Stone Age days.

I know, I know – people working, hot afternoons, etc., but with day games here, we’ll have same day late afternoon & evening viewers on The Continent.

  303. Kazz via DROID.X December 11, 2010 10:23 pm

Im sitting here smiling watching the reactions to SMU’s death penalty sentence.

I like the message it sends!

  304. bighilofan2 December 11, 2010 10:34 pm

    Jim Donovan….

you’re a winner, Mr. Donovan. watching da coaches going giddyup giddyup was so heart warming for us UH fans. really was..

my hat is off to M. Greenwood and V. Hinshaw. took a coupla ladies fo lead da pack to da promised land. job well done for a start, ladies. now go work on da UJH marketing gang. get em cracking.

D2 is right. Al is right. marketing is where its at. the time is right now for da golden opportunity. everybody gotta carry their load to make this train a great success.

    just sayin…

  305. bighilofan2 December 11, 2010 10:38 pm

wen we played Florida in Gainesville, dat was da best. daytime, hot sun. cool light shower… planny fans, dat was da best. so a 2 oclock game on a saturday so da world can see our gang bust up da odda guyz in primtetime, if we gonna act bigtime, gotta have a crowd fo watch da fight. no mo fun if no mo crowd fo watch da MMA action. da poor neighborhood analogy is a good one.

    meanwhile. like Pride said….

gotta really prep for Tulsa. we gonna fight…. gotta be ready fo trow blows.

  306. jm2375 December 11, 2010 10:39 pm

    bhf2 – who’s d2? 😆

  307. bighilofan2 December 11, 2010 10:43 pm

an i’m tinking… wit all da big time action this past week, da recruits announcment, da Big West and Mountain West announcements, da governor tellin da good news in his campaign for support UH… we got da good news action for support da recruiters…

i saw Gib Arnold giddy. I saw Trapasso giddy. I saw Shoji giddy. I saw Mack cool. yup, things definitely definitely definitely lookin up fo da green bottle guy. 😀

  316. Ballpicker December 11, 2010 11:26 pm

Dare u go BigHiloFan2, that’s what I wanted to hear about the place u liv. Great description. Thanks for the painted thought. Any pic? I saw in in the SB on Maunakea I believe and some tv news video.

Back in the day I spent some time with a college friend Chuck Parker on the Big Island. In the morning we manage to get up early drive up to Maunakea, get down in the snow, later we drove to Hapuna Beach freakin body surfed, then end up at a cabin in the mountain freezing our toolies off but we cooked something and feel asleep from exhaustion. But was good fun. And I got pictures. Anyway sorry bout the rant. Can’t spell remeniscing.

  317. SteveM December 11, 2010 11:33 pm

I totally agree about nationally televised games and exposure for UH Warriors. Have the game anytime they want….as if we have choice. 🙄 Noon or 1:00 PM OK too.

But they should move the TV cameras to the mauka side so they can pan up and show the stands on the makai side with people in the seats. Hope UH sold the empty seats on the mauka side so we get some $$$ of our own.

  318. Denkuveddymucho Bhf2 for supporting day football games. Maybe we should play both for a couple of seasons and see which draws bigger in-person crowds AND more tv viewers.

orff to beddybye – lots of backlogged household stuffs tomorrow – after cleaning the house, both of us will work in the yard for an hour or so plus sort cans & bottles and start getting files in shape. Hopefully if the weather is half-way decent by late afternoon, we’ll go for a semi-serious hike around Kawainui Marsh.

BTW – Mark February 5 in your 2011 calendars. More info to come over the next couple of weeks.

  319. Tim December 11, 2010 11:52 pm

So how is the recruiting weekend going al? or ST?

  320. bighilofan2 December 11, 2010 11:52 pm

    SteveM

    totally agree

    Ballpicker

    nice name. 😆

    OFF TOPIC.

    reminiscin about Maunakea.

50years ago, went hunting 7 sisters (humpback) hills of Maunakea, saddle road side, for sheep. my two younger brothers and I would chase for my fadda. four indians runnin da hills, chasin da sheep along da fenceline separating the bow an arrow (lower) hunting area from the gun (mauka) area, about da 8000 ft elevation. doze were da best times.

you can drive up Kaohe Game Management Road, just Hilo side of the Girl Scout camp on saddle road, and take a cruise. dusty, but totally totally awesome view. da rental car peeps not gonna like you go, cuz da dirty dust gonna get all ova da kaa, and da hosedown at da beach ain’t gonna cut it, unless you go through the car wash 2x. 😀

of course, the tourists just go fo da drive to da top.

  321. bighilofan2 December 11, 2010 11:57 pm

yah.. I like no about da recruitin 2. 😀

  322. bighilofan2 December 11, 2010 11:57 pm

    ST

tole me a coupla years ago…. cannot tell all da good news one time.

gotta spread out da good news… hmmm..

  323. bighilofan2 December 12, 2010 12:05 am

    off topic…

    btw,

you outta see da Saddle Road now. they straighting it up alot, still working on it, but get plenny 55 mph areas. an straight… hilo kona now about hour half.. gonna get shorter as they keep straightinin up da road. plenny fast from da 19 mm – 38 mm (middle top of saddle)

an if you like know about mauna loa side, the road just befo da turnup to Mauna kea to Mauna Loa is a beautiful desolte drive. 😀 desolate, as in WAC desolate.

  324. bighilofan2 December 12, 2010 12:09 am

if I was a Warrior and I wanted fo my family to go visit Hawaii, I’d definitely go ask Coach Cal or Mana for learn how to hookup wit BigHilo and send scouts to lurn where da sites on da big island. not easy to find. 😀 Mana gotta ask da parents. 😀 an Coach Cal gotta go ask friends. 😆

I could be hiding in Kazamura cave.

  325. bighilofan2 December 12, 2010 12:10 am

shudda been in da tourist biz.

  326. bighilofan2 December 12, 2010 12:14 am

    for da Warriors.

tell you family visiting Hawaii for the Tulsa game to google Kalapana Red Road, look at da pikchaz, hit continue, keep looking da pikchaz, get a good idea of spots to see on da big island Hawaii.

  327. bighilofan2 December 12, 2010 12:24 am

if I was a kinda Warrior 😀 and I wanted my family fo have a good time visiting Hawaii, I’d tell em go stay Waikoloa Hilton. If you really like live it up, Royal Kona Resort or Kona Village Resort.

course, us blue collar guys go King Kam or Kona Seaside right in the heart of Kailua Kona.

    :mrgreen

but I’d check da wedda firs. 😆 :sumtimes get yosemite sam kina action. 😀

  338. Garret December 12, 2010 4:00 am

For all of those people wondering how much money UH will have to spend to get into the MWC and Big West, comparisons with how things are now in the WAC are invalid. The WAC’s TV deal and number of appearances on ESPN were about to get whacked after BSU leaves after this season. Whether or not Fresno/Nevada left, UH was going to get MUCH less TV money from the WAC and UH wouldn’t be showing up on ESPN much because BYU got the WAC’s TV spots.

After Fresno/Nevada left, the WAC basically would be off ESPN and get almost no TV money–I saw that the Star-Advertiser mentioned $100k per school and that sounds about right. Plus, the teams available in the WAC would *not* draw well at Aloha Stadium and that would drive UHAD’s budget further in the hole. And if UH turned down the MWC, they could easily just have invited Utah State to replace TCU and then the WAC would be dead *and* UH would not have a spot.

So, the short answer to the travel subsidies question and the possible large reduction in PPV revenue is: how much is the survival of the Athletic Department worth?

  339. Garret December 12, 2010 4:13 am

There are a lot of positives that could make UHAD come out financially ahead than they are now. But the bottom line is that staying in the WAC would have been death for the athletic department. Anyway, let us look at the positives.

    1. SDSU indicates that the MWC TV deal will not decrease–they were horribly underpaid anyway. C-USA gets more TV money this year than the MWC and the MWC has BYU, Utah, and TCU! So, if adding UH helps keep the TV deal where it is, then UH will get about $1 million more from the MWC than the WAC.

    2. PPV revenue will not go to zero. At a minimum, UH will be able to show all of their non-football sports on K5/PPV so that will bring in money. ST said that UH could keep the football PPV and share the money with the MWC–that surprised me since I figured that Hawaii was a market that the MWC would want to get the mtn channel. Anyway, not all of the $2.5 million per year from Oceanic/K5/PPV is going to go away.

    3. Attendance will be much higher at Aloha Stadium without having the bottom of the WAC coming every year. There are less bottom-feeders in the MWC than there are in the WAC, plus some people will go because they haven’t seen the MWC schools for awhile. BSU, Fresno, Nevada, Air Force, and SDSU will be good draws, and Wyoming was actually rated higher than ALL WAC schools except for BSU in the computer rankings as recently as last season.

    4. Travel will be much less for UH in the MWC and Big West. That will save UHAD money (especially for the non-football sports) and reduce the travel time and missed classes for UH athletes. It is much easier for UH to travel to MWC cities than to WAC cities. Traveling to Big West schools is NOTHING compared to going to WAC schools.

    5. Recruiting will benefit from the change…and recruiting brings wins and wins bring the fans with their money. Recruiting would have DIED in the WAC, which means that the fans wouldn’t show up at the games and UHAD would drown in debt.

Anyway, I could go on and on about this but the bottom line is that UH needed to move for its athletic survival.

  340. Garret December 12, 2010 4:14 am

I remember someone who loved to take shots at JD here, saying that he wasn’t doing anything for UH’s conference realignment needs. I wrote this over the summer and posted it here:

The articles linked below have said the following about the Big West:

    A. The Big West’s commissioner said that only UH has contacted them for membership.

    B. The Big West has noted that they need to add 1 school in order to have NCAA spots for softball, baseball, and women’s volleyball. If you judge by just those 3 sports, UH may be the strongest school in the country.

    C. Report says that the Big West says that UH will have to offer some travel subsidy to join. This is in an article about a direct interview with the Big West’s commissioner.

    D. The Big West’s commissioner went on the record saying that any school that wants to join them would be judged by their baseball and women’s volleyball programs. UH was in the NCAA tournament in both.

    E. There is no rush right now since UH won’t have to declare its intentions before May 31. The Big West also has a moratorium on voting on adding any schools until at least January 1.

The foundation has been laid and JD has done all the legwork to give UH the *option* in case the WAC folds or UH decides to leave. How UH does this season, and how valuable ESPN feels a TV contract with UH might be, may determine what is best for UH.

  341. Garret December 12, 2010 4:16 am

I have to break up my post since it has too many links and is under moderation.

These articles were from months ago. The Big West option was something that JD worked on far before the “leadership team” was being talked about.

Long Beach State student paper talks about how the Big West would benefit from adding UH. The article notes that during 2008-09, UH spent $3.7 million on travel expenses and Long Beach State spent $868k on travel expenses:

    http://www.daily49er.com/sports/lbsu-s-gimmillaro-big-west-would-benefit-from-hawaii-1.2354295

Dave Reardon says that “we have it on good authority the Big West eagerly awaits Hawaii”

    http://www.staradvertiser.com/columnists/furtherreview/20101001_As_the_WAC_gets_less_western_its_time_for_UH_to_get_out.html

  342. Garret December 12, 2010 4:16 am

UH’s coaches have told UH’s Athletic Department that they prefer the Big West over the WAC:

    http://www.staradvertiser.com/sports/sportsnews/20100930_UH_coaches_favor_Big_West.html

Honolulu Star-Advertiser article that estimates the travel subsidy that UH will have to be at $250k. The article also quotes a Big West AD who is very interested in adding UH:

    http://www.staradvertiser.com/columnists/ferdswords/20100923_Womens_volleyball_should_have_a_big_say_in_where_UH_ends_up.html

  343. Garret December 12, 2010 4:17 am

Long Beach Press-Telegram article about how the Big West would want UH to provide travel subsidies to be added. It also mentions how they need to add school that emphasize the sports the conference emphasizes, specifically mentioning women’s volleyball and baseball.

    http://www.presstelegram.com/moresports/ci_15967186

ESPN article about how UH has talked to the Big West about adding its non-football sports if UH goes independent in football. ESPN mentions that UH is attractive to the Big west for men’s and women’s basketball, and adding UH to the Big West would give the Big West the needed 6 members for an automatic berth. The article also mentions that UH is the only WAC school that has contacted the Big West:

    http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/blog/_/name/katz_andy/id/5492091

Honolulu Star-Advertiser article about how the Big West’s commissioner said that UH has a great history with the Big West and they have a great affinity for the UH program and people over the years:

    http://www.staradvertiser.com/sports/sportsnews/20100825_UH_making_contacts_with_WCC_Big_West.html

  344. Garret December 12, 2010 4:18 am

The Big West deal was done a long time ago. However, ST and many others mentioned weeks ago how it would take TCU leaving the MWC to open the spot for UH…so, we owe TCU and the Big East some thanks.

  345. Garret December 12, 2010 4:21 am

I don’t know why it was considered good news or a surprise that UH would only need to subsidize airfare and not hotels/meals for MWC teams. They would be staying in a hotel no matter where they went to on a road game (heck, they stay in hotels the night before their home games), so only the airfare is different for them.

  346. Garret December 12, 2010 4:26 am

I was looking forward to finally having some blog time yesterday, but then our friends called and said that their son was feeling good enough for us to take him to Legoland. So, our family dropped what we had planned and immediately took their family to Legoland. Radiation treatments start in a few days for the boy…and his grandma is also going to be starting radiation treatments next week for her cancer too…

  353. wafan December 12, 2010 5:35 am

Been saying for several years it would be nice if Hawai’ian actually painted one of its planes with the H and in the UH colors. I guess they are too reactionary.

Hoping Alaska does so soon! Can you imagine the visiting teams arriving in an “H” logo plane? That would be awesome. I think Alaska flies in or out of each of the MWC citis, too. They can connect at SEA or LAX and then fly directly to HNL.

Heck, with SWA perhaps flying to HNL why not have them do a “H” plane, too? They could compete for a charter contract since UH has to pay cost-sharing anyway. I do not know if SWA flies to all of the MWC cities but if they did it would work out the same way as it might for Alaska.

As was pointed out in an earlier post (CRW?) the teams traveled via 737s for their charters. What the heck?!?! If you do not ask, you definitely do not get.

Maybe Hawai’ian feels they already give enough to the UH?

  361. Pomai December 12, 2010 6:10 am

#353 wafan – If SWA was smart they would cut a deal with UH for a charter for both ways, UH going to the mainland and the teams coming over here. Why you ask, simple they are coming over here soon with regular service so what better PR would it be for them to advertise “UH Athletics Offical Airline” and a big H logo on the tail. Hawaiian would be in deep dodo for sitting on their hands.

WDoc is right, nowhere but (808) do you see nighttime CFB unless TV dictates it.

Somewhat humorous piece on how the MWC needs to change its name. I personally like the name Western Athletic Conference but that name is temporarily in use. The Mountain Waste Conference was applicable for a short period but now that it robbed the WAC of its top teams it’s actually looking pretty decent. Oh well, that is life on the frontier.

I’ve been on and off of it several times, if you’re talking about the same one I’m talking about. It really does work, if you stick to everything on it. You can realistically expect to lose 5 lbs or so a week. It’s difficult to stay with, though, and you spend the whole time looking forward to Thursday. But it does get you used to eating a smaller amount of food, so the four days that you are on normal food, the amount of food that you would eat before the diet seems huge. It is true that it is easy to gain it back after the diet. It doesn’t change your long term habits, but when you see the results, it gets a lot easier to maintain.

Southwest Airlines either flies to, or is in earshot of all the MWC cities except Fresno. UH already pays Southwest to charter the football team from the west coast to their WAC destinations…perhaps a chance to expand on that with not only UH charters, but also MWC opponent charters?

Great review. Thanks for posting such an in depth impression. I’ve handled one in the store, but your review covered alot of ground that I couldn’t with such a limited amount of time. Based on my in-store experience and your review I think I’ll be waiting for a future generation to arrive. The potential is certainly there for this device, but based on my current portfolio of tech devices (laptop, desktop, iPhone, iTouch) I’m not sure this device quite justifies the expense at this time for me.

Your paint store will be able to advise you, but it sounds as if you’re speaking about a laminate, and, if this is the case, there is a paint available now for painting such a surface. A fair bit of work involved, I believe, i.e. cleaning it thoroughly, there’s a special base coat which must be applied first, and, from examples I’ve seen, it looks like a nice finish.

Ukiah Garden Café, 1090 S. State St. 1-707-462-1221. Its a very unpretentious but elegant greek/American restaurant with an extensive and well executed menu. Try the breaded veal cutlet (with the brown sauce option, rice pilaf, salad with the house (creamy orange vinigret) dressing. Also, their fresh brewed raspberry ice tea. All this for only 14.95. Service is always impeccable. Highly recommend.
