The U.S. men’s national volleyball picked up its second consecutive sweep when topping Tunisia 3-0 Sunday in a FIVB World Cup match in Fukuoka, Japan.
Punahou graduates Erik Shoji was the libero and reserve setter Micah Ma’a a played briefly in Sets 2 and 3 of the 25-10, 25-18, 25-17 victory. Setter Micah Christenson (Kamehameha) did not play, with Josh Tuaniga (Long Beach State) running the team.
The U.S. (4-1) plays Iran (2-3) on Tuesday in Hiroshima. The Americans swept host Japan (3-2) on Saturday, 25-19, 25-19, 25-21, in the round-robin tournament.
Lets see, how far will the Wahine fall? I say 9 spots to 20.
I don’t expect JR to return until Nov, while BVS is probably day to day. In any case, HH and NI are both top talents. Add the athletic Akana and they should be competitive.
Cal Poly’s stat lines are not impressive. Good but not AA. Hawaii has 2 potential AAs and a decent block, edge to Hawaii.
UCSB appears to be stronger than Cal Poly, but I still like Hawaii’s defense. Toss-up
Just a short comment on serving (long). Kind of noticed that players toss the ball and “leave a little early” so they end up under the serve a bit, which causes it to go long. Its such a small timing issue but the result is inconsistency. So, start with the toss (which imho is a big part of it because it is the trigger), then footwork. They do seem to keep their eyes on the ball so… Also not a big fan of their current footwork where they seem to lean into the serve, which if just a little off, can get really inconsistent. Thoughts, anyone??
Cindy, good closing in the last post; agree wholeheartedly. People in this blog are so quick to point out what they perceive as deficiencies that they forget who they are criticizing. That is, a young, inexperienced group that lost huge players and have to regroup. Kudos to the RAM and the coaching staff for not giving up on the girls and trying every combination they could think of with the people they have. GO BOWS!!!
My worthless two pennies on serving into the net…same as above, because your arm and elbow has to drop when you’re under it as well. Almost always into the net if that happens.

2. as for the poll. just 64 coaches voting. doesn’t really matter. RPI is more important, as is winning the conference.
5. the Irony, and I forget to mention it, but in the alumnae match, Ah Mow’s first serve went into the net. The Wahine were watching and laughed.
