Warrior Beat: Hawaii football’s Max Hendrie to medically retire
Defensive end Max Hendrie is expected to medically retire from the UH football team.
The status means Hendrie would remain on scholarship, but would be ineligible to play for the Warriors.
Hendrie, who was born and reared in Sydney, was listed as a defensive end in the Warriors’ four-man front.
He redshirted in 2016. He played in nine games in 2017, recording 13 tackles as a reserve end and on special teams. Last year, Hendrie played in 13 games. Two of his three tackles were sacks (both against BYU). He also returned a blocked punt for a touchdown against Navy.
Jonah Laulu was the No. 1 defensive end in the recent spring game. Mason Vega, who is recovering from an ailment, also should contend for time at that spot in training camp.

Well our school cant seem to win the big ones. But at least they went got up there. As Bum Phillips once said when the Houston Oilers lost a crucial game “we knocked on the door this time but we’ll kick it down next time” ( I think )
The University of Hawaii will be in full “Flutie Effect” (rise in applicants via the University’s Athletic prominence) mode once the Football program hits its stride this coming season. It will have an effect on the entire Athletic Program as well. Basketball, Baseball, Softball, WBB (every program) can all benefit when the “stride” occurs.
Its important for Matlin and his department to capitalize (with a solid strategy) on this good fortune. The money spent (albeit wisely) will bring much back in return. Larger fan base. Increased Television viewership. More tuition income. increased Donor base. Increased (national/international) merchandise sales. All possible. Coupled with the visibility of the MVB team, just the beginning. Up to Ganot and Trapasso to produce now. No more mediocrity once the stride comes. No more. Coming soon. Be ready.
Winning:
Bum Phillips had Earl Campbell but he also had Dan Pastorini.
UH had a near-perfect lineup: A left-handed opposite, two left-side hitters who could pass decently, imposing middles and a great setter. With only 4.5 scholarships, this was a great assembly of talent and depth. It’s just bad timing that Long Beach had great talent and experience at the same time.
