Nice! Warriors are scary good this year. And they don’t play down to their competition but keep up their high level of play always.

Cindy, is there anything that can be addressed via official letter of complaint from a university. from an opposing team that plays at BYU to the NCAA about that kinda environment? I mean I think we all get cheering for the home team but if there is evidence of racial comments and vulgarity, isn’t that cause for it to be addressed?

    Yeah Stijl! Nice match man.

    Maglio/ Ozee win 21-13, 21-16 on court 1.

Best way to get the behavior change is to not schedule them in the future. If teams choose not to go there due to bad fan behaviors or bad officiating, they will run out of opponents to play and they will be force to do something to address the situation. Right now, they don’t seems to care what others think.

If things get bad on Saturday, I would hope Charlie never go back until changes are made. We are not in the same conference as BYU so there is no mandate we play them every year.

    6. Another option is to incorporate the following into the match contract: (a) agree to an officiating crew that does not cover MSPF or Big West matches (i.e., from another conference), (b) ensuring continued use of video review for questionable calls, (c) removal of abusive fans by officials (although this may already be covered in the rules). The first item will have cost implications and perhaps is already used (although I don’t know), the second shouldn’t be an issue, and the third may already be in the NCAA rules (if not, the teams can agree to what constitutes abuse, process for removal, etc.). However, controlling abusive fan behavior is difficult across many sports, and remedies for fan abuse usually follow the completion of a match (i.e., Utah Jazz banning fans post-match after reviewing game video).

In general, there is value in scheduling BYU from an RPI, SOS and resume perspective (the program has performed well in recent years), so I would prefer a contractual fix as opposed to a nuclear option.

My impression in watching today’s match was that UH played in first gear. They were not pressed to play at a higher level and it felt a little boring although their stats may have been high. UH made six errors in Set 2 (McKendree out hit UH) and even a Worsley set missed completely and fell untouched. There is a lot of upside to UH play at Provo.

The only way to shut them up is to kick their butt. I was there when Hawaii beat BYU in 2001 at Smith Field House and in 2002 at the Marriott Center in front of 10,000 plus fans. It was pretty quiet at the end. Their fans are the Worst/Best in the Country. I’ve heard them make racial comments, against Long Beach State the BYU football players were spitting at the team and then following them when they switch benches, fans throwing Skittells candy on the floor (so that the players might step on them and slip) etc. All the while the refs and university officials do nothing. All the schools do it especially at small arenas (e.g. Duke). Believe me if the SS arena would allow a student section behind the players bench, instead of loyal, respecting, quite, appreciating, older, family oriented season ticket holders, the Hawaii fans would be just as bad…….well not as bad as BYU. What’s Mormons going to do on a Friday/Saturday night in Provo? Go to bar and have a good time ……yeah right. They go to Smith Field House. Saturday’s game should be a good one I hope the Warriors do something they haven’t done in 10 years beat BYU at home. GO BOWS!!!!!!! BOOKUMDANOALOHA

I don’t see it any other way than BYU is “condoning “ their behaviors. They also intentional put students behind the end line and so close that they are in the server’s back pocket.
They could easily rope off that area and open up the upper section to accommodate more people.

Value in playing BYU??? We could get as much value flying a few hundred miles east and playing Loyola Chicago, Ball State or Lewis.

Bad officiating and bad behavior are not things of value for me.

It’s called Rivalry. Hawaii may not be BYU’s number one rival, that goes to Utah. But the Hawaii/BYU rivalry in football and volleyball have history. I remember when the Football Warriors would knock over a BYU male cheerleader on the sidelines. I almost forgot about the greatest mascot in college football. Cosmo the Cougar. Talk about pumping up a crowd.
    He’s the BEST. BOOKUMDANOALOHA

The 5th pair for the beach team seems hopeless. The smart thing would have been to slide Loker/huddleston down to 5th…::

    11.

BYU Hawaii football rivalry is one sided. We are not good enough to be considered their rival in their eyes.

et call. the NCAA has sportsmanship rules but they seem not to be applied to BYU. don’t get me started on how bad the officiating is and the bias towards the home team.
    7. some interesting ideas but they aren’t going to use one set of rules on video replays than from the rest of college.
    10. there is big value in playing in the BYU tournament. you get matches against the MIVA, EIVA and MPSF.
even Jaylen Reyes laughed when I asked about the homecourt advantage. He admitted students would tug on opposing players shirts when they went back to serve. THAT should not be tolerated and teams should file formal complaints about that and the other inappropriate comments.
